To somewhat help me with my measurements, I "marked" the inside of my pitcher with an ice pick half an inch below the bottom of the spout. Now, my procedure is to simply pour milk to that mark and stretch it until I reach the bottom of the spout. As long as I follow that rule, all it takes are a few knocks and swirls for me to get wet paint. :)
havent read the comments but to make some better coffee art you would start pouring from one end and slowly wiggle the jug towards the other end. then finish it off with the pour straight through back to the other side for that fern look. or you can tilt the cup and do what your doing on the side and the force of the milk stirs the coffee around so you dont have to move the jug
@SeanofZeus Yeah, this video was made over a year ago and Gail has been working on her skillz quite a bit since then :) Thanks for sharing your tips - Kat
Hi from sunny Australia, I love you guys, you make me smile. Having just purchased the Rancilio 3, I have found your tips so helpful, now making perfect coffee and microfoam, a little tip of my own, milk with a high protein count and low fat gives superb microfoam, gotta watch the calories now that I am addicted to the coffee that this machine pulls. Will pop into visit if I am passing thru!!!!!
@ibjames We just took a class so are hoping to do a throwdown sometime soon! I filmed a lot of the class so hopefully there will be some good tips for folks from that :) - Kat
gail the best advise I can give you (and im not good - but these are a few basic tips that may help) is the following:
- foamier milk - start higher
- tilting cup = earlier appearance of design
- once you start seeing foam, move the pitcher side to side slooooowly and with fluidity - like basically 1/2 as fast as you are now. not intuitive, but it works...
- try to maintain the same flow until the end until you raise it and cross the design
you two are so cute to watch x)

It's two-fold latte art! The third one looks like an apple from far away and a rosetta closer up! She meant to do that, didn't she? ;)
