I only took food stamps 2x, for a total of 2 months. I felt lousy about it but it did help me keep up my strength & I had some pals over for meals. I had a chance to get fully on Welfare in 1982 & I said no. Here in France, about a 3rd of those who qualify for Welfare are too proud to take it & I understand them. I just don't understand how people can take govt checks & figure that is gonna continue. I am disabled, BTW. (I get no stipends from either country but the US owes me benefits.)
I don't think the park thing is a bad idea. It could encourage people there to gou outside and relax or have fun,and when people are in a better state of mind they're more inclined to spend money. I think increasing consumption is the only way we're going to get out of this recession. (Tip for democrats: increasing taxes = decreasing consumption.)
@WoodlandRavah It is raining every morning here in Paris, France, and I love the cool weather. We get these "étés pourries" every few years and I experienced them back in the States, too. We sure were dry in March and April, however. The smart farmers have smaller farms and they tend to stick to heirloom crops which can tolerate drought okay. The fruit crop here looks fantastic around Paris this year, the trees are laden.
@WoodlandRavah Driving just north of Paris recently I saw small orchards with heirloom trees in them totally laden. I was also happy to see a farm near the airport which uses only small hand-operated or horse-pulled tools to work the land. I have an Amish-type background so this really appealed to me. Their land looked in very good shape indeed!
Those food stamp numbers will drop in July. Florida's Gov Rick Scott starting July 1st is ordering anyone getting their food stamps to take a drug test. Will be fun to watch whats gonna happen there. And you fail it, you have to pay for it, plus you don't get your food stamps, and then DCF can insert themselves straight into your life.
@kastnmagic As far as I know, yes. Hopefully other governors will follow in Rick Scotts footsteps though. There are some loopholes that people can get a court order type thing to have someone else pick up their foodstamps for their children and such. But I'm pretty sure they're going to have to state why, and that'll be a whole nother thing for dcf to deal with. :-D

It is so strange because we can see all of the signs of a worsening economy in our daily lives. It is all around us. But for some reason, the bottom is not falling out of the stock market. In fact, although there has been a little bit of of volatility in the past few weeks, the stock market is quite stable. I don't know what to make of all this. I guess it simply means that corporate profits are way up and somehow that isn't helping the unemployed and impoverished citizens of the United States.

My husband offered a guy a job who has been unemployed for 2.5 yrs and he declined said he was going to use up his unemployment. This offer was $300/wk over what he previously made. I also know so many who are doing work for cash while receiving unemployment. Around here there are jobs and a lot that pay decent wages but it seems like some are enjoying the unemployment. I know some states are having big troubles though.

In case you don't know, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear plant in Nebraska is inches away from disaster due to the historic flooding of the Missouri River. They are using an inflatable rubber thing to keep the water out, the water will do nothing but rise due to the melting snow pack.

Dem, Nebraska is of concern especially Ft Calhoun. It stores the state's spent fuel...MOX fuel and top of it is at ground level. The thing we are all watching is to make sure the cooling pumps remain working. If those go, so does the MOX fuel. It would be a dirty bomb floating down the Mo River.

Of course we can't help our own, because the system is crippled from out sourcing, and intense competition. Our factories have been sold off for scrap, and even our intellecutual property has been foreclosed on. Our children graduate with no prospects because we don't invest in them, we invest in Oil futures!, and yet somehow they are to blame for this. They have "no drive" and so the spiral tightens.
We have a "two headed" recovery. One is eating well, traveling and buying like crazy with great deals everywhere. They have their retiement nest eggs safely tucked away, and recieve the best in health care while recieving their ss payments. Then, there is the other side. (usually their grandkids) who are mostly unemployed, on food stamps, being foreclosed on and behind 3 to 4 months on their car payments. They have student debt that won't stop and credit is gone.

I only took food stamps 2x, for a total of 2 months. I felt lousy about it but it did help me keep up my strength & I had some pals over for meals. I had a chance to get fully on Welfare in 1982 & I said no. Here in France, about a 3rd of those who qualify for Welfare are too proud to take it & I understand them. I just don't understand how people can take govt checks & figure that is gonna continue. I am disabled, BTW. (I get no stipends from either country but the US owes me benefits.)

I don't think the park thing is a bad idea. It could encourage people there to gou outside and relax or have fun,and when people are in a better state of mind they're more inclined to spend money. @WoodlandRavah It is raining every morning here in Paris, France, and I love the cool weather. We get these "étés pourries" every few years and I experienced them back in the States, too. We sure were dry in March and April, however. The smart farmers have smaller farms and they tend to stick to heirloom crops which can tolerate drought okay. The fruit crop here looks fantastic around Paris this year, the trees are laden.

@WoodlandRavah Driving just north of Paris recently I saw small orchards with heirloom trees in them totally laden. I was also happy to see a farm near the airport which uses only small hand-operated or horse-pulled tools to work the land. I have an Amish-type background so this really appealed to me. Their land looked in very good shape indeed!

Those food stamp numbers will drop in July. Florida's Gov Rick Scott starting July 1st is ordering anyone getting their food stamps to take a drug test. Will be fun to watch whats gonna happen there. And you fail it, you have to pay for it, plus you don't get your food stamps, and then DCF can insert themselves straight into your life.

There are some loopholes that people can get a court order type thing to have someone else pick up their foodstamps for their children and such. But I'm pretty sure they're going to have to state why, and that'll be a whole nother thing for dcf to deal with. :-D

It is so strange because we can see all of the signs of a worsening economy in our daily lives. It is all around us. But for some reason, the bottom is not falling out of the stock market. In fact, although there has been a little bit of of volatility in the past few weeks, the stock market is quite stable. I don't know what to make of all this. I guess it simply means that corporate profits are way up and somehow that isn't helping the unemployed and impoverished citizens of the United States.

My husband offered a guy a job who has been unemployed for 2.5 yrs and he declined said he was going to use up his unemployment. This offer was $300/wk over what he previously made. I also know so many who are doing work for cash while receiving unemployment. Around here there are jobs and a lot that pay decent wages but it seems like some are enjoying the unemployment. I know some states are having big troubles though.

DEMCAD, I would be interested in your take on the situation in Fort Calhoun. In case you don't know, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear plant in Nebraska is inches away from disaster due to the historic flooding of the Missouri River. They are using an inflatable rubber thing to keep the water out, the water will do nothing but rise due to the melting snow pack.
There are claims of a "News Blackout", the interwebs are exploding with rumors. It's really hard to know how bad the situation is.

Dem, Nebraska is of concern especially Ft Calhoun. It stores the state's spent fuel...MOX fuel and top of it is at ground level. The thing we are all watching is to make sure the cooling pumps remain working. If those go, so does the MOX fuel. It would be a dirty bomb floating down the Mo River.

We have a "two headed" recovery. One is eating well, traveling and buying like crazy with great deals everywhere. They have their retiement nest eggs safely tucked away, and recieve the best in health care while recieving their ss payments. Then, there is the other side. (usually their grandkids) who are mostly unemployed, on food stamps, being foreclosed on and behind 3 to 4 months on their car payments. They have student debt that won't stop and credit is gone.

Dog owners, the dude who loads my hay, and a few people w/ kids. Who pays to keep this place open? Look at it on Google Earth. For scale, there is a ChinaMart and mall close by that could easily fit in one section this place's parking lot. It sure will make a good FEMA camp.

What people don't realize is that it doesn't matter if they are drug tested or not because the system is financialy unsustainable. The cost of all this testing is just going to bankrupt the system even faster.
I have been so dirt poor all my life that people with welfare have a higher standard of living than I do, but I have never asked anyone for anything and never will because I'm too proud to stand in the welfare line.

Sometimes the outer man suffers for the inner man's health. In reality, there is only ONE. But I heard a dick on MSNBC say that the decision the courts made against the Walmart employees was just, because a class action was "TOO BIG". It would hurt Walmart too much.
This is is a good example...so everyone agrees now; the little guy is shit!

@Yankeeprepper I am not a top 5% earner but I have never payed fed tax from day I first worked at 13.My dad clued me that it is a "gift tax" and if you never start, you never pay so I don't.Race tracks & big blocks are for 100mph.Why endanger the public on the streets? That's stupid.Though people quickly adhere and hit the brakes when signs drop limit of speed but totally ignore laws and statutes of YHVH.
