never tried making a bow before... how did you lay out the form? it looks rather simple in the long run, but things tend to get complicated last minute. did you steam the wood for the form also? and then stencil out the shape, and screw it into the shape of the form?
Hello there nice job! I have a question though. I have a simillar bow made of an Africa originated wood called ''iroko''. The problem is that it doesn't have the flexibility required to become a functional bow. Do you know if it possible to gain flexibility after the boiling phase? Thank you.
hey i have a question. I was planing on steaming the wood to make a recurve to give it the curves. but i thought if u steam wood and bend it then when it cools down it stays in that shape and isnt too flexible so it'll brake. Is this true?
I just laid down a recurve bow, traced it, cut out two layers of 3/4" particle board and glued them together, then attached them to a larger piece of particle board.
isnt the arrow supposed to be flexible not the string because i doubt indians and other wilderness advanced ppl had any kind of rubber band/elestic material.
You got you templet done well, what I would have done is used thinner strips of would and glued them together with a good two part apoxie,it will make your bow more flexable and stronger.
ok first thing yes you can make a bow but know this when picking your wood you have to watch out for the way your grain is running you want the grain to run flat with the bow you don't want the grain to run length wise. grain like this side front [lllllllll]back side
your bow will bend even and after the fiber glass it should not brake
just pointing out, the video is 6 minutes and 36 seconds long, so it's not over that time it is that time, and for it to be a well put together video it had to be over a minute long, to show where he made this bow at, and I'm pretty sure if you were making this you would take the time to take it off the form so there is nothing wrong with it, no deformities, and so it functions properly. And next time if you have a problem with the video, just don't comment.

uhh crazylegs im absolutely sure u dont know that repeating insults (fat, "eatig yank"(i think u need typing skills also), and u suck balls) is not a comeback its a lack of brainpower already wasted on fucking bullshit. although since u barely have brainpower ur basically "giving it ur all" on these crappy comebacks
all u fat burger munching wasted shitty nation yanks, i cudnt give a shit, ur cumbacks are terrible, waffleman..u suck balls!!! and the rest of u, get a life god dam !!!!!
jute twine will do - the bow will be more historical - i've saw a film that said that your bow string has to withstand 5 times a bigger weight that you need to pull it to shooting position -for egzample if you need 15 kg to pull your bow to position your bowstinng has to withstand 5x15=75 kg. You need to check how much weight does you line withstand and during the preperation you need to cower the line with wax

wow souds like a typical comment from a usless fat waffle eatig yank. u ave to be the most boring person on earth surely, lack of freinds, respect n common sense. u really do suck balls
that pretty cool the end reuslt what was the draw poundage you wound up with travis?have you thought of laminating layers then steaming or just soaking in tub of realy hot waternow yea this will cause some swelling of the wood but I think it will be easier to manipulate.. just food for thought good start
NICE!!!! Never thought steaming would let the bow hold the recurve shape. I would love to see a video of this when it is finished. I just finished my red oak board bow (#40).
I used red oak. I didn't taper them first in order fo the wood to fit tighter in the aluminum backing plate. And since I don't know exactly how much to taper them, I figured I'd wait to taper when I was tilling it.
As for the tapering, I'm planning on using a Dremel attachment for planing. It shaves off 1/64" at a time, and is compact enough to use the whole length of the limb.
