I have, including myself, losing the tip of my thumb due to carelessness about 10 yrs ago. Mny sources say 5x the animals weight, but tht won't work w/ fat bodied animals (ground hog/porcupine). They're just too rugged. Better off to snare or shoot them for food, or modify the deadfall for a clean head shot. Be mindful to know what you are going to get and remember to check your regions laws. A non-lethal version can be made by replacing the dead fall w/ a milkcrate w/ a weight on top.

Have you personally ever caught anything in a trap of that kind? How big a trap is needed to catch anything usable as food?
