Rage might have a good engine, but a lot of people are now thinking it's shit. I think it has something to do with the dialogue and boss battles and stuff like that.

The boss battles aren't major major, you'll have 2 boss battles prior to the big finale... one of them being a GIANT beat when you get the rocket launcher in the Dead City and can control the rocket and hit its weak point (Easy and fun have to jump up to dodge his attack he does in pattern, Platformer style - then in the Power Plant Theres a boss of which feels more like a real real Strong Enemy, not a ridic boss like Deus Ex.
Next gen needed now. We're gonna get dumbed up fucking games that don't look any better than the last one for several years if they don't release it soon. And everyone will buy a pc.

You have to install 8GB because of the blu-ray drive is only x2 read and write, its too slow which would mean long load times, so you install to help with load times.
ps3 has installs cos blu-ray read times are sooo sloooow compared to dvd. so it dumps aloud of files onto the HDD to save having to seek it on disc all the time
RAGE will be GOTY...I was disappointed when Skyrim was said to be on one disk on XBOX 360. BF3 will be the shooter of the year I believe but RAGE is huge with 3 f'ing discs! The awesome new engine, the combat, the story, and the driving make this a worthy competitor. It has been in development for 8 years people. If there is any odd-end game you need to get if you have extra money, get RAGE. You will not be dissapointed.
@nej922 definitely check it out...RAGE is being published by Bethesda (Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Oblivion, Skyrim) and developed by IdSoftware (DOOM, QUAKE). It looks so much fun and editors are already praising it for its chemistry. I know people say get BF3, MW3, or Skyrim, but I will definitely get this before all of them (technically since it comes out on October 4...next week!)

valves source engine is also based off a Id engine, quake 1.. Heavily modified tho. Is said there is a few lines of code from the original quake running in HL2.
The 8GB is likely mostly textures... In carmacks keynote he talked about how the bluray is the slowest seeking medium, and when playing off the disk you get texture popping because of this, and that they try to code around this limitation by trying to predict and preload textures from disk it cant be avoided, and thus the HD install is the best way to go.
My gripe with the DVD-9 disc that the Xbox 360 uses is that its holding back multiplatform games. Most multiplatform developers don't exceeded its capacity in order to fit the game on one disc (9GB) to appease Microsoft. PS3 owners suffer because some of these games could have a lot more content.

the reason it needs installed on the ps3 is cuz of the slow first gen bluray drives in them, the new 12x bluray drives are much faster and are equal 12x dvd speeds (DVD-9 is actually stuck in 8x mode, same with dual layered bluray dics)

@RyansworId You do realise the high resolution textures and whatnot will all be capped to a certain point, just like every other game on console, so really you can't say that. There is only one other thing that it could be: lack of programming efficiency.

This basically renders having a blu Ray disk useless. Blu Ray will only have an advantage when the next playstation comes out.

RAGE will be better because it is different, hell, even most Minecraft commentators have better storytelling than COD does, and that game hasn't even technically been released yet. The point is: RAGE, AC:R, BF3, Skyrim, Uncharted 3, and the other games that are coming out are all better than MW3 in quality, and always will be. At least DICE, ID, Ubisoft, and everyone else made new engines..

the reason for the big install is probably the speed at whitch the data transfers from a blu-ray disk which is slower than dvd, some developers put an install of certain data (usually data which is regularly used by the game) to the hard drive so it doesn't slow down how the game runs, this is especially true of some (not all) games that run at 60fps.
What is gunns talking about, that people looking foward to MW3, BF3 and Skyrim? Does he knows how big the hype is for rage? The hype is so huge that it's sick. He covers to much on BF3 and MW3 so he misses out on hype for other games.
Rage comes under the radar. It will blow everything out of the water. 60fps, amazing graphics, visceral combat, responsive controls, huge world. I expect a metascore of at least 9.2

The reason why the PS3 has a mandatory 8GB install is a work-around for the slow READ access from Blu-Ray. Basically the 8GB is so that Megatexture technology that is in ID TECH5 can stream the virtual textures from the HD and not the BLU-RAY disc--this eliminates the nasty texture pop-in that was happening on Beta versions of Rage on the PS3 that was shown at e3 2011. This is a good thing that Sony let id software manage this work around it only makes the experience that much better for PS3

@thirstyforgame That is mostly true, but technology is progressing, making newer game engines have a harder time running on the hardware in the consoles currently on the market. The consoles are stuck with what they have till new ones come out, and until that happens, developers are getting "bottlenecked" not only on their creativity, but with what visuals they could present to us. They COULD keep giving consoles the rotting end of the stick, but eventually, new hardware will be needed.

In about 3-4 years, You might not be able to MAX out new games *wordlmt

If your starting to hit the point where you can't even play new games, then you most likely only need to fork out the same amount you would for a new console, maybe even less. But all in all, it really comes down to preference in the end I guess.

Id tech 3 was used in return to castle wolfenstein, doom 3 used id tech 4

The difference between 360 vs PS3 rage.
360: The disc speed is perfect for texture streaming, but has to be split onto 2x discs for campaign and 1 disc for MP.
PS3: The Blu-Ray drive is not fast enough to texture stream all the pages and bitmaps, so 8GB's of the game is stored on a Hard Drive.

the reason it needs installed on the ps3 is cuz of the slow first gen bluray drives in them, the new 12x bluray drives are much faster and are equal 12x dvd speeds (DVD-9 is actually stuck in 8x mode, same with dual layered bluray dics)

@Superjuho1 Yeeah, no. Hardware is different. Software the same. PS3 Hardware is clearly better in that aspect. Graphics, FPS will be the same. But nice try in making the Xbox sound less shitty by using 3 Discs. No reason why PS3 wouldn't run it as the same as Xbox either. As Uncharted is a beautiful game, and can only be handled for PS3. Nice try though.

@TeratusVantian you don't understand.. You don't get lag because developers limit the ps3 games to around 8gb.. This is because if they used any more, the ps3 can't read the disk fast enough. This basically renders having a blu Ray disk useless. Blu Ray will only have an advantage when the next playstation comes out.

@nur226 Just because a game has a large sale number doesn't mean that the quality is as good as the sales. RAGE will be better because it is different, hell, even most Minecraft commentators have better storytelling than COD does, and that game hasn't even technically been released yet. The point is: RAGE, AC:R, BF3, Skyrim, Uncharted 3, and the other games that are coming out are all better than MW3 in quality, and always will be. At least DICE, ID, Ubisoft, and everyone else made new engines..

the reason for the big install is probably the speed at whitch the data transfers from a blu-ray disk which is slower than dvd, some developers put an install of certain data (usually data which is regularly used by the game) to the hard drive so it doesn't slow down how the game runs, this is especially true of some (not all) games that run at 60fps.

The reason why the PS3 has a mandatory 8GB install is a work-around for the slow READ access from Blu-Ray. Basically the 8GB is so that Megatexture technology that is in ID TECH5 can stream the virtual textures from the HD and not the BLU-RAY disc--this eliminates the nasty texture pop-in that was happening on Beta versions of Rage on the PS3 that was shown at e3 2011. This is a good thing that Sony let id software manage this work around it only makes the experience that much better for PS3

@thirstyforgame That is mostly true, but technology is progressing, making newer game engines have a harder time running on the hardware in the consoles currently on the market. The consoles are stuck with what they have till new ones come out, and until that happens, developers are getting "bottlenecked" not only on their creativity, but with what visuals they could present to us. They COULD keep giving consoles the rotting end of the stick, but eventually, new hardware will be needed.

@thirstyforgame Also true, but it's not like you have to upgrade every single aspect of your PC whenever a new, amazing looking game comes out. Even if you can't run a game maxed out on your PC, you can play it with settings similar, if not slightly better than the console version could play on. For example, let's say you buy all nice new parts for your PC, and let's say that all those parts can run Crysis 1 maxed at 60 fps. In about 3-4 years, You might not be able to MAX out new games *wordlmt

If your starting to hit the point where you can't even play new games, then you most likely only need to fork out the same amount you would for a new console, maybe even less. But all in all, it really comes down to preference in the end I guess.
