Just to give it a try... Fighters evolve, and train new fighters (ie the breeding and procreation stuff) and each GP will give the birth to a new champion. Still I got to admit that it is a bit heavyhanded but still thats its charm and doesn't detract at all. I mean god knows the Gladiator metaphor is waaayyy overused and stale. BTW I think you were thinking 1984 not 1983, which to be honest doesn't really touch anywhere near the themes presented here like you suggested.
