however, this video gets some credit for showing a good rate of fire. i'm not sure if he could make those into accurate shots but 1 shot every 2 seconds is pretty fast considering how unwieldy the darts seem.

Actually if you know how to stalk - instead of tree-stand sitting like most people are taught to do nowadays, it is not a big deal to get this close (yes, I do/have). The indians in America used to play a game called "swat deer." The name says it all. Google Tom Brown - he has a school for learning this.

The only problem I have with an atlatl is the fact that thier is much movement involved in order to throw the dart, that is why I prefere a simple self-bow over one of these because you can simply aim and with the flick of the bowstring send an arrow to the target, at least for Deer hunting the atlatl would be very difficult. But anyone who hunts with an atlatl is hardcore, no doubt about it. You need some distance though, man.

Well in reality, you have the dart "loaded" already so a swift arm movement is the only movement required.

This target is at 10 yrds., the maximum range I recomend a deer size animal be shot. 6 feet is better.

And good luck not scaring the deer off with that big movement. I've seen a LOT of theorists talk about deer hunting with an atlatl. I have yet to see evidence of sucess though. The atlatl was meant for hunting huge animals that are unafraid of man (mamoth for example). It was used in groups so that many darts would be in the air at once. One man, one dart.... Your better off setting traps or making a bow.
