  • Some thoughts:

-Baking powder will keep 6-10 years, but will slowly lose strength. Mine's down about 10% after 5 years. Better to store cream of tartar and baking soda separately.

-Hard to have too much baking soda: baking, toothpaste, first aid, treating dehydration, etc.

-We store butter-flavor Crisco for butter flavor. Storea at least 13 years in a basement just fine.

  • In my food prep I also have a bunch of "Chef Boyardee" cans of whatever.

  • how you gonna cook without power

  • @TinSoIdier

yea, i got wood, grill, coals, fluids,

  • you may have better luck storing, grinding, using whole peppercorns.

  • Great video, do you have water stored up or is that just in another video?

  • 02.04 - That's strange, at 02.04 you see a picture of butter buds but you talk about budder buds.

  • Better get that stuff in a dark environment, or it will go south half as fast at least... too lazy to cite such evidence but just put the stuff in the dark..! Good video!

  • good man

  • good nan

  • The dates, for one, mean quite different things. For instance, "sell by" is more a guide for the store to know how long it can display a product for sale. The "best before" or "best if used by" date refers to a quality or flavor of the food. "Use by" works more like an expiration date, similar to that on medicines, and taking them after the date is not recommended.

  • has anyone tried spam and cheese? well i cant remember exactly what its called but but it comes in thosw spam cans and its mac and cheeses with chunks of spam

  • Won't the mayo go bad a couples days after opening it?

  • One suggestion - I don't remember seeing in either of your vid's..bouillon..beef & chicken dry broth powder. I store broth in cans, broth in the cartons (which I freeze) & then the bouillon. Very helpful when you are cooking all those beans & rice!

Also spices such as bulk dried onion & garlic. I buy a lot of spices like cinnamon, chili powder, etc in 1 lb. bulk & then store in vacuum sealed canning jars. You'll be surprised how much you will go through when cooking everything from scratch

  • I try to have more than one option for everything. For example, you can freeze butter. It also has a very long expiration date, so I have quite a stock in my fridge, as well as a ton in my outdoor freezer, but also plan to get some powdered butter. Likewise, things like tomatoes...have canned, frozen & dried.

If you buy a big box of apples ...dehydrate some apple chips (very yummy) & make some applesauce.

It's good to have food storage as diversified as possible

  • I'm one of the Cheap Lazy Bastards giving a few tips from what I know, I'm watching your vids

    Nice videos : )

Important it is to prioritize, and do the most vital things first and of course use all your resources as jealously as you can so you can get more done with what you have

Happiness is mental, survival physical. You need basic things to live, you don't need much to be happy if you get perspective right, but they're nice

I tend to ramble if I have things to say so I'll shut up now lol

  • Thanks omegahpla. Totally agree. That's why I keep in my storage food items that I know keep my family happy - like Nutella. Even if we are eating rice an beans everyday, knowing that a spoonful of nutella is available will keep us going mentally.

  • There is survival, then living. I believe you take care of survival first

I think one of the best things to have is a lot of salt. It's a very useful commodity and if you don't have it you would wish you did. No refrigeration? Salt is your best friend, and certain other spices like garlic. Curing hides? Living through a hot summer? Without salt it's hard to function because you won't retain enough water. Salt is so cheap, but I guarantee you, if people run out it will be more valuable than gold

  • @omegahpla

Sams has good size box of salt for 98 cents, we picked some of that and sea salt too. Don't foget your peppers too

  • Pippie2010va - Sams (i.e. Wal-Mart) is, in large part the very reason that relations with China has created situations where we must be concerned with [econimic] emergency preps. I guess what I'm saying is Sams club sucks.

  • I started storing food also.. Enjoyed the video..

  • Fresh Butter and eggs can be at room temp for months, check it out. it is so cool.

    thanks

  • You're lucky that you have access to stuff that we find very hard to come across here in Ireland. eg: Gulf wax and liquid pectin.

  • That lemon juice won't go out of date by next May. It's acid. As long as oxygen is kept away from it, it should last a long time. I used to work in food production and the chutneys and savoury sauces that were produced for the Christmas market had a date of just less than one year on them. And the only reason that date was put on them was to stop people from storing any jars that they had not used the previous year for the following Christmas so that they would buy more!

  • @guineapiggy: So true!! So many of our items have dates that are designed to get us to buy more!

If you are worried about something, throw it in the freezer when it gets close to the date. But I couldn't agree more...so many of those dates are a joke!

  • great video...

I was planning on buying a lot of baking supplies this week. Because we make a lot of cookies during the holidays. flour, sugar, brown sugar, spices etc. Buy in bulk to save money and trips to the stores.

  • Looks like you are starting to get a good cache going there, amigo!
