Are those stealth heater? If it is, you'd better be careful, because i've heard those things blow up and can crack your sump causing massive headaches.
Your uploads have inspired me to make the jump to new technology and buy a XP 2000 cone. It was between the XP and a EV-180. I hope you are loving this skimmer. Mine will arrive shortly.
I have been researching this octopus skimmer and I am planning on buying it for a new 180 reef I plan on setting up. If, possible, I would like to get your honest, unbiased, feed back on what you don't like about this skimmer as well as what you like about it. Mostly, I am interested in what you dont like about it. There is always the good and bad so if you find something tideous about it please let me know. Thanks!
@1mkwiet Great, thank you! Exellent pros and cons. Based on everything you mentioned, my main concern would be the stands height and placing the skimmer under the aquarium however, that bubble blaster pump is just calling for me LOL. Glad I could get some sort of review on this skimmer with someone who actaully owns the skimmer and has used it. Thanks again.
@newyorksteelo i just got the new sro3000 super reef octopus, it has pulled out more gunk than any other skimmer i have had so far. i am putting it on my 180 in the next few weeks.
@procharged70cutlass I since was able to get my hands on one of these and within 4 weeks I sold it to my friend John. It was noisy and inconsistent. I have since gotten an EV240 and it is a gunk machine. Check out some of the videos I have on it.
@newyorksteelo and i had the ev180 and couldnt get anything out of it. it was so sensitive about water tension being broke. i couldnt stand it . i never got any skimate, now im getting so much that it only takes about 2 days and the cup is ready for emptying. im setting my 180 up here in the next coupleof weeks ..
I saw that you are using the brs reactors from bulkreefsupply how do you have the bio pellets in them. I just got a reactor and was just curious as to how you set it up. From what i read these pellets need to be tumbling in the reactor and the reactor only has two holes on the top of it. Wont the pellets clog up the holes? And do you think a maxi jet 1200 would be good for the reactor with the bio pellets?
well this took some tinkering. I took out the sponges and replaced them with some plastic mess. The mesh is the needle point mesh found in the craft section of walmart. A MJ 1200 will be perfect for this application. I use a 200 gph rio pump and it's a little to little, mj1200 is 295 which should help. Oh and they don't have to tumble...just shake them up every few days if they don't tumble.
i was never notified on this video update. what kind of return pump do you have and where can i find a good punp for under 60 bucks that has about 150 gph flow rate? if not where should i look for a good pump?
So without any nitrates or phosphates ( due to the pellets) do you have zero algae growth? Do you have rotifers , copepods in your tank? Also should you put a uv sterilizer off the output of the pellet reactor to kill any rogue bacteria? in other words will they screw up your system?
no algae atm. I've had some diatoms and some green hair algae (very very little) before I got the pellets but that's just from normal new tank cycle. Now I have no algae. I have very few pods in fact....thinking of getting some pod suppliments but not needed.
As for the UV that's not a good idea with a bacteria driven ULNS. Reason is that the UV will kill the bacteria that is removing the nitrates and phosphates. The skimmer is what cleans up the bacteria. Bacteria systems need GOOD skimmers
Noticed the return on your protien skimmer is creating a lot of surface agitation. Could be a source of your micro bubble. Put a 90 degeree elbow and downtube a bit bellow the surface of the water. And that will help cut the aggitation down and get rid of the micro bubbles. Or at least a great portion of them.
Where can I get or order those float switches?

Good idea I'll try that if they keep happening. ATM they've gone down to almost nothing since I fixed my return pump.
