To those who are making the assumption that the UCC believes non-Christians go to hell and are therefore hypocrites. I am truly sorry so many people have spread that hate and fear based message, and sorry for any personal negative impact that has had. But honestly, the UCC does not believe or teach that. We love God and believe in honoring every person made in God's image, regardless of that person's religious background and views. And many of us do not believe in Hell at all.
If you truly want to spread the message of universal love and 'ALL THE PEOPLE' why do you believe that people that don't have exactly the same viewpoint of you should be tortured and burn and scream and suffer for all eternity? Surely you're all hypocrites? You know that your belief system is great big sick joke right?
@chrisplus23 Actually, the UCC doesn't believe anything of the sort. We believe that everyone has a personal journey, that you should respect all life and all viewpoints, that hell is made in your life by men, and that a loving God would never torture anyone. I'm an atheist, but raised UCC, and they put up with me just fine.
I just hope that this church does not as well turn out to be a bigot magnet in the end. But since most of the criticism I have heard so far has come from the conservative and ultra-conservative edge I am satisfied for now.
Really great message! Even (or especially because?) being an Atheist I have to say that I am glad that there are still people out there who are proof that generalizations about religions are spmetimes not completely justified.
@EPR89 I am a homosexual, vegan, socialist, who is ethnically Jewish and the grandson of holocaust survivors. And I am a reverend in the UCC :) Turns out they actually do mean what they say in this ad.
@MirageScience actually, I'm an atheist and a proud member of the UCC. I might not every regain my faith (I frankly doubt it), but I'm very proud to have the UCC has my tradition. The UCC supports testimonies of faith, not tests of faith, and my testimony is that when I lost my faith, the UCC didn't throw me under the bus. Thus, I at least retain my faith in my church and the good work they do. It was a UCC minister that wrote the serenity prayer - something any atheist can love.
This won't play well with the elite narrow wayers. Humans tend toward being competitive, they want to be special and better than others. They tend to marginalize those that are different. Fundamentalism meets those tendencies.
Universalism is very hard for many to accept. When everyone is a VIP, no one is.
