Bill .. Bobby Hicks .. Charlie Cline .. & all you other grand muso's in the band here .. WE LOVE YOU, GUYS !! Man, that twin-fiddle sound is unbeatable. I just ADORE that ever-so-faint 'half-smirk' on Bobby Hicks' face during this performance. Like .. it's as if he's saying .. "I'm a red-hot fiddler, and You'd better know it, folks .. now JUST WATCH ME " ...
OMG this is just superb .. to be sure, we fans can rightfully admire the artists who have come along later in recent decades .. but for the VERY BEST of this moonshine-guzzlin, footstompin goodtime type of original bluegrass music, this is just GOT to be the best ever, coming as it does from this particular primo combo of Bill's Bluegrass Boys (of which there were numerous convulsions, during the period 1939-1980s)..
I was born in Oregon and i have to say that i wish i was from the south. im mediocre on the guitar at best. if i was from down there i bet i'd be pickin the banjo all day long. WOOO!!!!
Hello, Please check out my new Bill Monroe Video titled "Bill Monroe - Lord Protect My Soul", if you like old Gospel Bluegrass, your going to love it! please comment! thank you!
I just read all of the comments posted here. There was appreciation and insight from many directions, but also totally irrelevant hostility going every which way. I and many others have been fortunate to have heard him express a firm and confident belief that his Bluegrass Music is for everyone, and a force bringing folks from different backgrounds together.
Only if the darkie did something to deserve it. A lot of people miss that part and assume they were just running around the country picking up random groids and hanging them. This was NEVER the case.
@tallswede80 If you really believe that then you have some serious educational problems. The only thing the darkie would of done wrong was have black skin.
Tell me if I'm interpreting this correctly. What you're saying is that darkies never break the law, they never do evil, and they never harm other people? If that's what you're saying then the cheese has fallen off your sandwich.
I'm black as hell, a militant socialist, I own every single Wu-Tang album ever, and I absolutely love bluegrass. Black, white, Indian, everyone should love this great music. Bill Monroe for life.
@MrKubilaj I'm feelin ya man. I'm on the other side of the pond and I'm so disappointed there's just one big bluegrass festival every year and I had to miss it this year... I need to visit the US someday... and learn me some bluegrass as well.

@bullawaya I agree. Bluegrass is entrenched in the sub culture of Southern California Arizona Nevada. The South west Bluegrass Association had at least 4000 members in 2001...Now that Im in Arkansas It is fun to collect music as far back as the Civil War and beyond! Tunes handed down that you will never hear on the radio. "Through the old southern mountains, I was traveling to my home.
Somehow I was lost along the way.
When I asked this stranger did say, This road is crooked
@Svegi53689312 You will be suprised to know that Bluegrass is passed on person to person- live. Nowdays only retired people have the time to try it. They go to a festival, some one puts an instrument in their hands and invites them to play along. Their hooked! Buy their own and start having fun...the Pawn shops are FILLED with electric instruments because the kids can't play what they hear on the radio- you need a mixer board etc. Bluegrass: what you hear is what you can play!
This black chick loves herself some bluegrass. I only tried to learn to play violin when I was a kid because of a fiddle player that I saw on tv in the sixties. I love BLUEGRASS. All you bluegrass musicians need to come play in NYC, there are tons of us who will come to hear you play!
@TheBullionBull you sick bastard, they are insinuationg that grassers are a bunch of ignorant fucks..you are an ignorant fuck..but, grass is americana not hillbilly..heeeeeee haaaawwwwww is hillbilly..i hate your frigging guts...
@keepitepic456 That's Jackie Phelps of "RIDDLE AND PHELPS" on Hee Haw...Phelps played banjo with TWO FINGERS and even played guitar with Bill...Somebody once said.."THAT LITTLE SOB COULD PLAY LITTLE ROCK GET AWAY ON A JEW'S HARP" LOL
Bill was pretty hard on fiddle players, does any one know who those two are. I think they are the ones that played The best version of Sally Godin I have ever heard.

when many people think of the south, they think of unsophisticated, simple minded people. This proves that the south can create some genuinely creative and cultural forms of art, regardless of northern perception. This is truly American history. I know of nothing from the north that can compete with this.
@disasterVoiceNZ If you don't want negative stereotypes of the south being perpetuated then why would you go and direct them right back at the north? The civil war was over along time ago and I dont know about you buddy but I know of only one USA and I'm proud of every last bit of it!
@disasterVoiceNZ The only thing so genre defining or creating i can think of from the north is the Chicago/Detroit House music scene that sprouted dance music as we know it today. Other than that, nothing compares!
Another great clip from the Al Gannaway color film productions in Bradley's quonset hut back in '54-55. Some good comments previously re: Charlie Cline (one of the fiddlers), the "drum head" on Ernie Newton's bass, Carlos Brock on gtr and Jackie Phelps TWO-finger "Scruggs Style" (esp. on this fast a number). This is just great, with another stellar Bluegrass Boys line-up behind Bill.
Before the Guitar got popular...about turn of 1900 the primary instruments of the Blacks was Fiddle and Banjo...the Banjo is a development of an old African instrument developed by The Blacks before the civil war...
@TruegrassBoy Uncle Dave Macon always had 3 banjos with him and they were tuned in in f and G etc so he had the rag to color code it so he could grab the banjo for the next song. and Uncle Dave could go from one song to another in a mannor of seconds

what is so great for me Mr. monroe owns a shop in my home town and still picks a mean insturment every Friday night ! ! and offers lessons in olde style playing and has a nice group of teachers for all elements of blue-grass music
Monroe might have been the best mandolin player but definately not in arranging a band, for the banjo player dominated the entire song. All the other instruments fell weak at best.
This is awesome .....so unbelievable

Its definately 2 fingers only in the banjo picking close up. I see 3 laying on the head.

Damn! When the fiddles come in on for the duet, they come in with some serious thunder and speed.

It's not the arrangement, it's the recording engineer, or lack thereof, that screwed up the mix.

is Jackie pickin the banjo with 2 fingers? crazy!
jtg2507 2 years ago
No, two fingers and a thumb...standard Scruggs-style bluegrass banjo. Look at any 'how to play bluegrass banjo' clip on YouTube... :)
Raoena 2 years ago
It is index and thumb only. "Normal" Scruggs style is ofc 3 fingers but Jackie Phelps did it with two. :)

Monroe might have been the best mandolin player but definately not in arranging a band, for the banjo player dominated the entire song. All the other instruments fell weak at best.
