DAMN, I KNOW EVERYONE HERE IS THINKING WHAT IM THINKING...R.I.P. REAL HIP HOP FROM THE 90'S ERA. I got mad love for the west but the East Coast truly owned this era of hip hop. They were on top of the world at that time. Nowadays everyone needs a Gimmick. I cant even understand half the shit these kids spit out today. And I could give two fucks if you made a dance to your song. No wonder I still rock these tracks in my car. This shit on the radio is garbage kid.
@julio8442 you must be smoking crack, west coast dropped just as much crazy rap as the east coast... i bet you live in the east thats why you say that.. i live in the west coast... i don't prefer none they both dropped ill shit in the 90's
@Multi420master Yea i grew up in DC. No your right man they both dropped hot tracks, maybe its just the east that played only east. But who can forget the classic East Vs. West battles..Because thats all I heard on the radio. But just think of all the MC's that came out during that era, I'm not talking about one hit wonders either. I think bottom line is that hip hop itself has gone so commercial that it kind of lost the meaning of being a lyricist. Thoughts??
@julio8442 yah i see what you mean.. i dont even call this new crap out music ..these new rappers lack the way of rhyming and making something so real.. 90's hip hop makes me feel high even when im not.. :D this new crap makes me laugh when i see it.
This right here is probably the most relaxing and sick ass beat that I've heard. Born in 86' and I complain. I feel bad for the kids born 10 years or more after me..
@teamarlus187 yeah Da Beatminerz were one of many production greats from the mid 90s. BTW I'd recommend listening to J Dilla, he made some of the most relaxing beats of the late 90s/early-mid 2000s.
@19MJsPr89 Yo how did you feel about the albums that Da Beatminerz released, like "Brace 4 Impak" and "Fully Loaded w/ Statik"? I remembered they had that one single with Treach from Naughty By Nature on "Brace 4 Impak" back in 2001 that was dope, but from the reviews I read over the years, many people said that the Beatminerz albums were mediocre and not up to the high quality that we usually expect from Evil Dee, Mr. Walt, and Baby Paul. What's your opinion on their albums?
@Beewise357 I've actually not listened to joints you mentioned. To be honest I based what I said about the Beatminerz on their production for Nocturnal and Enta Da Stage.
@YoungOldSchoolRapper Yeah, it aint nothing like 90`s hip-hop. Actually 88`-96` was the best era.(Golden Era). My son trips me out because I`ll put him down with something like Cella Dwellas or Emc and he`ll really be bumping it. I`ll be like "Damn, that`s good that he appreciates real rap. What`s cool is that there`s so much more that I haven`t even turned him on to and vice-versa.
@kevhar12 It's worth remembering that underground rap crews got their videos on BET back then and got the same regular TV exposure as the mainstream rappers. So for example you'd have a Heltah Skeltah video and then a Jay-Z video, then a Lost Boyz video and then a 2Pac video. By the early 2000s that was unheard of, today even more so. It made hardcore rap less accessible because to know about it you'd need to do alot of research whereas back then all you had to do was switch on BET Rap City.
@YoungOldSchoolRapper My 14 year is son is also down with the real hip-hop. We talk about hip-hop all the time. Sometimes he`ll turn me on to some stuff I might have overlooked. In fact I got this song off of his computer.
damn man as hip hop fans we prolly thought it would never happen but the genre is actually dying out just like all others, no disrespect to all the artists that even now still keep it real but hip hop as a whole is nothing close to what it was, people look at you funny if you nod your head lol
@Baltimorehop -- They basically went at it with Puffy and Big and lost on the commercial tip. People forget they were dissing Biggie all the time! Clowning him in videos! This is basically the time when serious, serious money came into hip hop. These cats were filming on video camcorders in BK basements and Big does the first million dollar rap video. BCC was the last of rappers who were hood and repped it hard.
this brings back memories man! my cuz is 21. i'm 33. when he used to ride in my car when he was lil. i played all this stuff. i didnt know i was helping to create a hip hop head. he knows his shit.
i really feel bad for the kids who were born around 1996 after...by the time they grow up they're going to be affiliated with junk mainstream shit!!! unless their parent influence them with real music....Peace!!
I totally agree and its not their fault. I'm from the golden age of rap and I play that music around my young son. Back in the 70's parents played their young kids music that they listened to. Why in this hiphop generation can't we?
Huge respect for you for raising your kid to respect the real essence of hop. I intend to do the same with my son. I grew up listening to these songs and i can only hope my son appreciates these legendary tracks as I do. Ain't a thing changed since '96,when this came out, my head still bouncing hard to the beat.
@datboiraj Music is a commodity like anything else thats exchangeable, who are you to decide what's "good", I'm sick and tired of reading about "music these days" it's so myopic. You have to understand, do you think all music in 1996 was like the this? of course there was trite money grabbing music back then too. Songs like these have stood the test of time you can't judge the present like the past.
Okay dude man. Imma keep this short. Your replying to something i said a YEAR ago. Well let me tell you one thing, you may got a point, but see this is where common sense comes into play. Into understanding whats relevant music and what isnt. If you like songs where they talk about girls, money, chains and club music 24/7, then be my guest. I do to listen to others in and coming up in the game like, J. Cole, Talib Kweli, Nas, Lupe, Curren$y. Fine line between lyrics and beats bro.
@datboiraj you can go to my profile to see what kind of music i like. i came to this vid cuz i love this song. i dont need a lesson in hip hop or music.
@SW4TR3PP1N sorry but this was never considered mainstream, with the exception of hearing this on westwood's show back in 96, i have never heard this played anywhere, apart from me playing the nocturnal album myself, or like minded real hip hop heads, which was and still is the minority.
@TheLuvrat This album wasn't completely underground. Leflaur Leflah and Operation Lockdown got some radio play. Obviously it didn't do Fugees numbers, but a lot of people at the time who knew of those songs liked this album. But that's from an East Coast perspective at that point in time; it may have been different everywhere else.
@spideymayne I don't know if you read messages properly, but the original message i replied to stated that this record "UNDERSTAND" used to be considered mainstream. I then replied that this particular tune was never mainstream and unless you bought the album or listened to underground hiphop music stations you would never hear this tune. I never said that there wasn't any other radio play records on the Nocturnal album. group therapy used get video and radio play. PLEASE READ MESSAGES CLEARLY.
@TheLuvrat I wasn't correcting you, idiot: I was building upon your post with some additional information about the album. It isn't a matter of comprehension, but -contribution-. What the hell is wrong with you?
@spideymayne Before you start calling people idiot. It's evident for anybody to read these messages and see who is missing the point and who has a problem. Your additonal information about the album, i already know and is irrelevant to the actual point, which is,someone posted that they can't believe that this particular tune used to be classed as commercial. AND IT WASN'T. The irony of this is the name of this track in question is called UNDERSTAND, something you don't seem to be able to do.
@TheLuvrat Alright. I -wasn't- going at you before, but now I am.
Here's what you said: "sorry but this was never considered mainstream".
That's flat-out incorrect. The album and all three singles charted on billboard, at least two of the singles got national radio play, and many casual rap fans liked Operation Lockdown and Leflaur, because -they saw the videos on MTV Raps and BET-. Just because Puffy wasn't dancing in their videos doesn't mean they're underground, you fucking idiot.
@TheLuvrat Incidentally, before you waste time trying to imply that you were referring to the record "understand" only, maybe you'll want to explain first why in hell you would be basing Heltah's commercial status on a filler track and not an actual -single-. I'm sure it'll make about as much sense as anything else you've said here.
@spideymayne You are once again showing that you suffer from serious UNDERSTANDING and READING difficulties. You can call me alll the names you want but it's immature and tedious. You keep going on about the album and singles. And this about this particular track which someone commented that this used to be mainstream. Lastly if you think that this track is just a .filler track. Then that just somes you up as someone who really doesn't UNDERSTAND.
@TheLuvrat You can't possibly be this stupid. This is what SW4T said:
"Crazy beat, hard to believe this used to be the mainstream..."
He wasn't referring to this particular song, you fucking moron. His point was that songs like this were the norm in the mid-90s: high quality, good beats, good rapping; great songs you didn't have to search for on obscure records. I agreed with him.
