@methanedirigible Rather than an issue of volume, you'd have tonal problems. There wouldn't be quite so much room for sound to reverberate and as such the tone of the instrument just wouldn't be right.

@methanedirigible Yes.  Try an acoustic bass guitar at a store sometime. You can't get much further than your own ear without an amplifier.
