Look Maw...NO Hotels on Waikiki Beach!!!! 1968 was so damn different...I love being there...it is so damn peaceful...the local boys and girls are so nice...even to whites!!! LOL.
Awesome scenes in this pilot theme that they never used again. I love the camera aerial swoop into McGarrett on top of building (not used here). Greatest camera effect ever! Thumbs up!!
@yellowribbon This intro was the intro for the pilot when it originally aired as a two-hour episode. When it was rebroadcast as two one-hour eps, they changed the intro to the one we're more familiar with that shows McGarrett on the hotel balcony. I doubt that this intro was ever shown after the original airing.
I really wish I could have seen the 80s. Haxaii Five-O, The A-Team, The Incredible Hulk, Metallica in their prime, no Justine Beaver, no FaceBook faggots controlling everything, best of all; METAL music was on top! Thumbs up if you agree that the 80s rule and the 21st century sucks donkey balls when compared!
recorded this my sticking a 70's jukebox up to the TV and pressed record, didnt have the tape from the store. Also remember playing with my dads 8 track/reel to reel Akai also, good times.
This is so much better than the new theme. They really took the power out of it with just the guitar to do the main melody and the drums don't match the music at all in the new one.
@eday2010 Yea I've since actually seen the new one instead of just listening to what people were saying the "official" theme was going to be and it was pretty good. There was another video that said it was the official theme for the new show and it was some guitar with crummy drums and everyhting. Glad to see they got a good one!
@RichieEastside From what I've read, that was a temp track that they were going to use as the official theme. But when the critics heard it, they all hated it because it was a terrible rendition of the original, so CBS went with this one, which I think is better than the original :)
That was nice, but it wasn't the opening sequence as I remember it. Too much emphasis on guest stars, and no shots of the co-stars. It must have been season one.
TV Guide News couldn't address that he was gay or not but did say that he was married to his wife Marie for nearly 50 years. Where did you read or heard that he was gay?
I've seen the first episode of the 2010 version of Hawaii Five-0 and to be quit frank, it's shitty. It's too much like Miami Vice but worse especially with those two guys and their piss and vinegar attitudes. Then there is the machine gun shoot-em up scene at the end of the show, like no originality. Aren't people sick of that shallow shoot em up crap? I mean really! It's quit BORING to see the same old cliches over and over again. This old one is BETTER. Sometime the new people don't get it.
@orpanyd then do not watch it...I saw all the old ones...and all the new ones that have been shown on TV....and I like them both....I hate it people compare something new to something old....you have different writers...different actors....I saw all the old ones with my dad as I was growing up...and I loved those shows...but now that I am older...I love the new show as well...DO NOT WATCH IT...YOUR PROBLEM IS SOLVED...NO MORE QUESTION!!!!THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!
the original hawaii five o is shown in more then two hundred countries.no other show in television history has done that and in my personal and professional opinion it will never happen again with any other show ever!
I had also wondered what version this was, but thanks for explaining. Great theme song. I just don't know why the NEW Hawaii 5-0 only plays half of the theme song. Can't they give us just another 30 seconds and play the whole song? That's what catches the viewers, a catch tune to intro into a good show.
@nebuladakiev It is not racist. That means that it is assuming one race is superior to another. All they are doing is depicting different scenes from Hawaii, the people, landmarks, and cast members,
For VanWaDebbie, if you listen to the dialogue in the first segment after the music, Five O was the state police. They had more clout than local cops. Also since Steve answered to the Governor who had pull with the Federal Government.
For Sacker, this version of the theme was used in the Pilot "Cocoon". After its initial showing in September 1968, it was edited into a 2 part story shown first at the end of season 1. That version of "Cocoon" (which featured an edited version of the theme as we knew since James Macarthur was not in it) is the version shown in syndication today and was even respliced as a 2 hour film. The original September 1968 showing of "Cocoon" was rarely seen again until the DVD copy in Set 1.
This opening must have been the pilot or one of the very early episodes--first season perhaps. The opening was recut into the now-classic version, using much faster pacing, and the famous helicopter shot into Jack Lord on the hotel balcony. This one obviously uses much of the same footage, but the later one did everything to much better effect. The later one, by the way, has more than 60 cuts in 60 seconds... pretty radical for its time.

Hawaii Five-0 CBS Red Carpet Season every Monday 10PM Eastern 9PM Central my husband and I rode the wave of excitement and it was awesome. Hawaii Five-0 is a revived nostalgic crime scene drama loaded with live action mysterious drama thrilling adventure and explosive reactions topped with a little heart. The music is upbeat groovy hip chic never skips a beat. Legendary composer Morton Stevens composed the world famous original Hawaii Five-O theme song. Aloha Kauaicr07 Kauaicc96 and Coolwater00.
Have never seen this version, and it showed the face of the Tahitian dancer (not hulu dancing; it's much slower). Will have to look up where the two women and young boy are now.
This sounds so.. tacky. The other old version sounds much better. I'd imagine if this was the version used, Hawaii Five-O wouldn't be the classic it became.
This is the opening to the 1st episode "Cocoon" which was a pilot. That is why the "real" Danno is missing and the "guest stars" are listed in the opening credits. And FYI, Leslie Nielsen did NOT have a comedy role!
@Serpo71 sorry for bursting your bubble son, I lived in Hawaii for 5 years and I was working as a mason. we were building a rock wall at his neibors house and we saw him several times in his back yard with a young guy and they were very friendly if you know what i mean.
@Serpo71 Hardly true. I heard those rumors, too, and they are spread by people who like to stir up gossip. I have a friend who is related to him, and compiled a lot of research for a book. Many of the people with whom she spoke said a lot of things that she could not tell me, because they are all going into the book, but none of them saw or heard anything to indicate that he was bisexual or homosexual.
@sapphiretaurus Plus, Jack lived in an apartment by Kahala Beach, with other similar buildings. There are no houses with yards there. If there is a yard of any kind, and Jack was in it with a man and getting too friendly with him, the people in the building would have seen them, too, not just some people in the neighbor's yard.
@fordxbgtfalcon When were you working on this neighbor's yard, and in what year did you see this? Jack lived in an apartment, and he would not have had his own back yard.
I hate to say it CBS, but this is why the original will always be "EPIC" and the modern day reboot (despite some great actors in the cast) is fail. Was a special show, for a special generation during a special time in geek history.
@DaigojiGai As a huge fan of the original, I don't see why Five-0 should just be for a special generation, I don't see why the show can't be rebooted for a newer generation. Sure it may never be the same as the classic, but times change, classics can be changed and adapted as well. They want to bring in more fans into the Five-0 fandom, and I think modernizing it to a style that newer generations understand and get is not a bad thing. I think the new reboot is a fitting continuation.
@BetaArtemis Not everyone in the younger generation will care for some of the effects in the newer one - the fast-paced scenes with gunplay, car chases, and explosions, as well as the lack of straightforward storytelling that the older one has. I wasn't around when the first show aired, but I saw it reruns as a child, so the original version can still relate to newer generations. The high-tech stuff isn't a guranteed attention-grabber for young people.
Jack Lord was pretty full of himself with that hair thing going on. When they filmed they would have to take and retake until he could get that perfect look.
@hotwelder2010 No, he was not. Who told you he did all that? They had 8 days to film an episode, and worked on a limited budget. If they reshot scenes because of his hair and makeup, that would have wasted time and money. No one who worked on the show ever remarked about such a thing, and I've seen episodes where his hair is blowing around in heavy winds, so he could not have been asking them to redo those scenes.
my gawd, where did you get this version. this is the original pilot opening of "cocoon". this is only about 10 times better than the other music video. this shows more of hawaiian culture/heritage. thanks for posting this version. i hope it doesn't get taken off.
@2000lightspeed You actually took me literally. No wonder you don't understand anything. I know it is my opinion, and I don't need you to point it out at every turn.
My parents loved Hawaii Five-0. My dad is really looking forward to the new one coming to CBS this fall. As a child this show didn't interest me, but I believe I'll like this.
@jef5150 IT WAS THE ORIGINAL ORIGINAL....PILOT.... IT was well edited and of course the longer version..BEEN to Hawaii many, many times from the 2000's on...and IT IS amazing to see how everything changed in Waikiki Beach...LOVE this version the best....Love how the camera comes swooping down..VERY COOL.
@sacker12: This is the pilot version. Note that James MacArthur (Danny "Book 'em Danno" Williams) is not credited, as he joined the cast beginning with the first regular episode. This is a rarity, as I'm sure CBS plastered the better-known opening over the pilot for syndication. I'd like to see CBS upload a high quality version of the version that aired for some twelve-odd years.
I love this memorable and fantastic Hawaii Five-O tune. I am so excited and looking forward to watch the new, cool and innovative H5O with a fantastic young cast in September 2010 on CBS.
huge fan hope they dont fuck up the show, i already hate the new opening sequence of the new one they fucked up the song .thats a no no. thats sacriligeous. like taking a rap sample.
@sacker12 "I've never seen this version before. I prefer the one from the series with the sped-up zoom on Jack Lord."
.
Ditto from me. THAT version is better. This one has those weird "dee-dee dee-dee dee-dee" notes in the beginning section around 0:15 that just ruins it. The shorter version is the one I like better and has more punch.
If you all look...Waikiki Beach in 1968 there was NO huge tall buildings. now it is cluttered with OUT OF DATE BUILDINGS>>>>HINT UR sister city...Las Vegas learned it is ok to demolish the old and bring in the new..do it Waikiki Beach..
@DarianGTR06: It's the version from the pilot episode, complete with some of the guest stars (Leslie Nielsen and Nancy Kwan) who I don't think were going to be in a running series. The music was remixed and shortened for the regular series. The beeping in the background is a lot louder in the pilot version.
@bearclause Whoever was in charge of re-editing for the series did a great job and had a very musical eye. The rhythm of the editing is great, fast and dramatic. That sequence looks modern and powerful. That's the one I'm used to (remember the fantastic Jack Lord zoom shot?).

Wow, I never saw this version before. It rocks!

how can this be one of the most popular / successful shows and still have people thinking people in Hawaii live in grass huts??????
5botball 1 year ago
I fear the version will be garbage. The promos look like crap - made to appeal to the Jr. high set. Pity the original is so good.

@bluemax111f You're right. It's not that good.

@2000lightspeed You actually took me literally. No wonder you don't understand anything. I know it is my opinion, and I don't need you to point it out at every turn.

Leslie Nielsen was in Hawaii Five-O at one point?
Shirley you can't be serious...

@TroyConvers5000 - Don't call him Shirley! Rest in peace, Leslie Nielsen (February 11, 1926 - November 28, 2010).

This is the opening title sequence to the pilot episode film - later recut into the two-part episode 'Cocoon'.

My parents loved Hawaii Five-0. My dad is really looking forward to the new one coming to CBS this fall. As a child this show didn't interest me, but I believe I'll like this.

@Sheri451 Have you developed an interest in the older version now?

@sapphiretaurus No I don't even know if it's shown anywhere.
Sheri451 1 year ago
@Sheri451 It is rerun on local channels, and a cable channel called ME TV is rerunning it. There are also full-length episodes on YouTube.

I love how they displayed Wo Fat's name over the fire as if the character represented an evil, sinister criminal.

Is Jack Lord running that way so as not to get creases in his suit? LOL

I love this memorable and fantastic Hawaii Five-O tune. I am so excited and looking forward to watch the new, cool and innovative H5O with a fantastic young cast in September 2010 on CBS.

huge fan hope they dont fuck up the show, i already hate the new opening sequence of the new one they fucked up the song .thats a no no. thats sacriligeous. like taking a rap sample.
belbro62 1 year ago
The 2010 opening from the new show is "ok". Doesn't have the terrific brass that the original had.
johnhi00 1 year ago
I've never seen this version before. I prefer the one from the series with the sped-up zoom on Jack Lord.
sacker12 1 year ago 17
@sacker12 This was the opening used for the first episode "Cocoon", subsequent openings would be a variation on this original one.

Wow I've never seen this version, I like the other one better.
DarianGTR06 1 year ago
@DarianGTR06: It's the version from the pilot episode, complete with some of the guest stars (Leslie Nielsen and Nancy Kwan) who I don't think were going to be in a running series. The music was remixed and shortened for the regular series. The beeping in the background is a lot louder in the pilot version.
bearclause 1 year ago
@bearclause Whoever was in charge of re-editing for the series did a great job and had a very musical eye. The rhythm of the editing is great, fast and dramatic. That sequence looks modern and powerful. That's the one I'm used to (remember the fantastic Jack Lord zoom shot?).
