@funn104 they required extra maintenance, i.e checking the oil level once a week etc, lot of woman and guys can't even keep up with the maintenance of a regular pistons engine, imagine a rotary. they really are great engines, if you own one you will fall in love with them.
@funn104 Because they shit out seals ever 10k miles and require rebuilds. Rotaries are fun to tinker with, and nothing else. They are loud, have terrible emissions, and are generally lousy motors.
It's exactly like you said, if they were good motors you'd see them everywhere.
@cyberslick18 they'd have lots of torque, the ones with turbos especially. Sure theyre not big V8's, but look at ANY engine under 2.6L, 2.0L, 1.3L, they wont have groundbreaking torque either. FWIW the 26B proved itself when it beat out Mercedes, BMW, and Audi's 7.2L twin turbo V8's during the 24hr LeMans. Also rotaries should be going in lightweight cars where you dont need alot of torque to get the vehicle moving. And with their extremely high rev limits you can makeup for torque with gearing.
@JD0x0 No, they wouldn't. Do you even know what a 26b motor is? It's a four rotor, literally a one of a kind design, you won't ever find that in a street car (unless you spend $60k and build it yourself), let alone a typical rotary car.
I can't believe you used a four rotor as an example, that's just pants on head retarded. That's like using the brabham b4t46 fan car as an example.
i got a 79 rx-7 with a 351 windsor v8 inside gets roughly 350 rwhp capable of 10 second 1/4 mile but its only been driven as fast as 11.2@128 with a crappy 1.8 sec 0-60 ft
ha rotors will never be comprable to a v-8 or any other engine with pistons.... obviously you dont know if you think there complicated thats why the new rx8 is so underpowered? try and get 8000 HP out of a rotor itll never happen the only way they put up any hp is through rpm they have no torque if you can understand what im saying torque times rpm divided by 5252 gives you hp so with out torque its hard to make HP....
Also, they do have torque, compare the torque to a 1.3L Rotary engine and a 1.3L Piston. Also, compare the torque of a 2.6L Rotary to that of a 2.6 piston. Remember, it is said that a 1.3L rotary untuned is compared to a 2.6L piston engine untuned. Which means that a 26B is compared to a 5.2 liter piston engine?

top fuel cars are v-8s and they do push 8k hp your stats are way off where is it said that a 2.6 rotory and a 305 ci v-8 have the same power because they are very far from being close how much does yoiu 26b put out and dont say 340 natuarlly aspirated either because thats what a vortec 5.3 puts out..... you still havent said anything worth listening to....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
cough thats pussy shit and not even a real number that torques weak and so is the hp stop throwing out bullshit numbers bro the more displacement you have the more power you can make if all other variables are kept constant.... youll never win this arguement rotaries will never compete with reciprocating engines why do you think mazdas the only one using them.... because they suck
Bullshit!!!! Actually, chevy, ford (no shit), datsun-nissan, toyota, and dodge all had licenses to build them. Chevy really put years and years of thought into it but it never took off. They will always beat reciprocating engines. The numbers aren't bullshit. They are from a Renown that was raced in 1991 and banned from competing in Le Mans endurance races for "unfair weight advantages".

haha your a joke dude..... read anywhere a triangle in an oval is never gona produce power like a reciprocating engine and if you want to talk about racing the v-type engines push over 1000hp on 2.5L NA so you still cant prove anything.....
you idiot i said v-type not v-tec dumb shit learn how to read v-type as in v8, v10, v12 come on and get a v-8 and you dont have to worry about weight you rotary guys are retarded i was talking about the v-12 2.5L that f-1s use learn something before you talk
Yea they endure what piston engines cant as well all them companys where goin to build rotary actually a corvett was goin to be 4 rotor but never took off because the engine kept brakeing as they couldnt make the apex seal right. As well the 280zx was sopouse to be rotary aswell.
No, my dad parked it about 18 years ago and it hasn't moved since, nobody put a moonroof in it, it' all stock. They are identical moonroofs too, and I would be able to tell if the roof was cut to fit it in. The headliner is all stock, too, and everything on the inside.
I want that exact engine and turbo setup in my 83 widebody roller, please tell me where i can get it and how much its going to cost. btw is that 2 or 3 rotor?
Alright guy I know I'm no expert mechanic nor will i ever claim to be but i also know i love these cars and the unique design of the wankel rotary engine. I may not posses the same knowledge as you but i should be able to ask questions to learn the knowledge i do not yet posses without negative comments.
you own an rx7 and you cant tell the difference between a 3 rotor and a 2 rotor RE engine? the upper intake manifolds give it away. its from a 2nd gen rx7. its a commong swap into the first gen as they dont need any special motor mounts. the front cover has to be different though.
I've actually owned a 2nd gen too and i figured it was the 3 rotor but i wasn't sure because I've never had the pleasure of viewing the shinny upper intake. Looks nothing like the NA I had a few years back. Anyway thanks for toning down the negativity a bit. I love learning more about these cars and Im always up for a lesson, Thanks =D
I'm one of the dreaded v8 swap lovers, but I will give rotary engines their dues when I see a really nice one like that! VERY Nice. Wouldn't mind owning that at all.
why are there not many rotary engines on the makes these days i mean if there so good then why don't all cars come with them installed

700 horsepower and 190lbs of torque, runs a 15 second quarter mile.

@cyberslick18 what are you talking about, the 700hp rotaries I know make about 550ft/lbs of torque. And thats naturally aspirated power.
JD0x0 5 months ago
@JD0x0 If you took 100 random rotaries making 700hp, maybe 1 or 2 of them would be n/a, the rest of FI with no torque.

Nice job! that RX-7 looks like fun. I have a 85GSL-SE that is close to stock, but one day - I'm gonna have a 91 turbo engine installed.

My 85 GSLSE has a glass moon roof, and my 83 GS has a metal pop out roof, they are interchangable with the same latch system.

Excuse me! This question is for anyone who has info or knows anything about the first gen.
First, does the car have an independent suspension?
And last, does it have ventilated disc breaks?
Someone please answer my questions!
wvang0013 2 years ago
Has a solid rear axle, and depending on which model it will have either disks or drums in the back. GSL and GSL-SE are the ones to look for.

no just the se
the gsl has no moonroof!

Are you sure? We have an 83 GSL and a GSL-SE and they both have the same type of removable moonroof thing?

thats probably because you guys did that to it if its not the se then no moonroof!

No the GSL had moon roofs, there was a special editon model in 81 i think, that did not come with a moon roof. But most of them did,
