Has anybody noticed that Alain Prost was lying in his interview with ESPN's John Bisignano? He said he would stay with Renault and what would happen in 1984?! He goes to McLaren as team-mate of Niki Lauda.
@MultiStar83 He wanted a better car. I forget the direct quotation from Modern Motor Magazine I was reading but it went along the lines of "Prost wanted this and that done to the car, and they promptly sacked him". Although i heard recently that he may have been flirting with a wife of an exec! But I`d say that since Cheever was dumped as well then perhaps the latter was just a rumor. John Watson (McLaren) wanted more money before he would re-sign and thus McLaren choose Prost instead.
About the BMW fuel legality... It was FIA F1 legal. But if any Police or other government authorities got their hands on it... legal sanctions for sure!
I remember these ESPN recaps well. They were sponsored by Renault, who must have expected to get the world championship. Instead, in a few years, Renault pulled out of F1, and out of the USA.
Renault would have pulled out of the American car market even with a whole heap of titles in the 80's. Their cars could never hope to compete with the Japanese in the same price segment.
In the 90's when Renault had 11 championship titles in F1 the British car mag Autocar wondered why the manafacturer ploved money into F1 but had dull roadcars (save for the Renault Sport Spyder)
It must be said that the legality of the fuel BMW used in the Brabham was questionable to say the least.

@Audioquest56 I think the 1984 cars were even uglier.

Piercarlo Ghinzani was renamed Pierconya Ghinzani for this race. His performance in this grand prix was truely outstanding.
