  • Heard a version of this the other day in sligo and it was done on the banjo with a guitar as backup and it destroys all of these other versions by far!

  • lebblues..Townes Van Zandt , besides being the best Texas singer song writer ever, was an accomplished performer...Other may have had more success with his material...but Townes never gave a damn about being famous.

  • Damn, yes!

  • A great classic! Awesome post!

  • Letters to Laredo has at least six great songs on it. This is just one of them. I listened to it all night once while driving through NC and VA.

  • Joe Ely does good work with this song, though I like songwriter Tom Russelll's renditions too. Check out a post about Gallo del Celo at the music blog Nightly Song.

  • I was there ! Great concert, lovely venue.

  • Great song, great footage.

  • Legalize cock fighting. It is a noble sport .

  • Is it possibe for someone to do a video of Joe singing "Every night about this time"? I love all his songs, but I love his version of that so very much.

Joe Ely is my kind of singer.

  • Tom Russell definitely wrote this song

  • @lebblues You are definitely right, Tom Russell wrote it....... but Tom, much like Townes Van Zandt is one of those guys who can write incredible songs but just can't play them as well as other guys who cover them can. The studio version of this song off of 'Letter To Laredo' is the best ever.

  • well maybe he ws just a bit downb that night....We all have off nights mate....I saw him in Bristol on the same tour as this video and on that night he was absolutely incredible as were his 2 side men...a fantastic show with heart and real passion.. faultless

  • I saw him in austin a month ago very pedestrian performance

  • I think Ian Tyson has, by far, the best version of this song.

Not to take away from the others.

  • Joe wrote this song.

  • Tom Russell wrote this song. Watch the video again, Joe says that the first place he heard it was in Norway when Tom sang it live.

  • Brian Burns has the best version of this song.

  • Jason Boland Live is the best

  • yes... thanks for sharing.

  • I knew Joe when he was young, and really GREAT, thin and beautiful, before his witch of a wife started keeping his balls in a jar by her bedside lamp. He is good here, but better before.

  • He looks fine to me and has a soulfull presence

    I'd take him to lunch!

  • 836b3, I did A LOT more than "lunch" in the 80's with Joe. I was his NYC and "on tour East Coast" girl in the 80's, until about '88. He still looks good now, but he was SO MUCH FUN, and SO HOT when he was younger! And he will never sound as good without Ponty, Jessie and Robert, and Smokey on the Sax. Those were the DAYS!!!! He's gotta be about 60 something now, because he was about 10 yrs older than me. I did a Google search tonight cause I got a feeling he was dead. Glad he isn't!

  • Norway loves both Joe Ely and Tom Russell! Thanks for posting!

  • Norway ??! A place where people like good music..:-)

  • Letters to Laredo is the album. I have worn it out.

  • thanks for sharing this excellent video

Joe will be at my festival in France on July 28th in France at

    the country rendez-vous festival

  • Excellent, thanks

  • Thanks for the video. This is my favorite tune he does.

  • Great. Thank you. The best Joe Ely video here on youtube.

  • Thanks! This is my favorite song about a Mexican chicken :D Joe Ely is awesome!

  • Great footage! Thanks for sharing...

  • I saw them a day later on the Blue Highways in Vredenburg, Utrecht, The Netherlands. They are really great!!!
