this is what i love about you tube and the internet..I loved this song BUT living at the time in nyc no one carried it and the song just played on in my mind! oh the memories you brought back
WOW !! AWESOME song. My mom and I used to listen to this on the radio all the time and sing along. Man I miss her. I am she is singing it around the throne in Heaven. : )
This was one of my favorite songs at the time it was out. And yes, this artist didn't get the recognition he deserved. At the time many including me wondered if this was the same Al Downing who was a baseball pitcher for a number of years, mostly with the New York Yankees. But no, they are two separate people. I believe the latter Al Downing is still alive.
Today is the first time I've heard Big Al Downing. I am very impressed. I've only listened to a few songs, but what I've heard, I've loved. This guy was a remarkable talent. Too bad racism kept him from being bigger than he was in the genre of country music.
If not for this guy and Charlie Pride, there'd be no Cowboy Troy or Darius "Uncle Ruckus" Rucker.
Big Al should have had far more success than he did. He had a great voice and definitely better than 90% of the stuff they play on country radio today.
Great to hear Big Al again. I played guitar in his touring band for the last few years of his life, and I can tell you for sure, I've never had more fun onstage EVER. Sure do miss him!
Ohhhh what a powerful song...I remember the first time I heard it... on a long road trip...I was 13 at the time and my thought was...I hope it wasn't the only time I heard this tune. Then I read in the newspaper not long afterwards a couple of years earlier he had a major disco hit! He was a versatile artist and very much underrated.
@WatchingVideosAgain ::::same here.My mom taped it for me when i was in trouble as a early teenager...she passed away 2yrs later, and did it ever open my eyes to the love she tried to show.I dont live it down.
Great Soulful Singer, Just Found Out Big Al Had Passed 5 Yrs This Past 4th Of July. May He R.I.P. I Had The Honor To Hear/Meet Him In The '90's. Country Music's Lost But, Heaven's Gain In The Angel Band!! Always Get The Chills On This Song & The Other Ballads. He Never Got The Attention He Should Have, & It's Sad!!
OMG! Glad to have found this song, it sure brings back memories. The follow up song is great too...MR. JONES 2. If someone has it would you please post that song too? TY
It's a great song. Yes, it is sad...but life is sad. lol. What really gets me is the tempo for the sad songs is a really peppy, happy tempo. Lol...I still like it though!
This song brings back so very many memories. I think of my dad and Cyril Oklahoma each time I hear this. There is a part two to this,"Mr.Jones the final chapter." Thank you so very much for posting this song.
I have looked for this song for two years, thank you so very much for adding it to share with others!! I remember as a young teen my dad playing what the station called the sat night ho down!! such a beautiful song, thank you thank you thank you.
This is one of my two all time favorite songs by Al. I have two different video's of him singing this song live. The best version was live on Hee Haw in the early 80's. Rock on in Heaven Big Al. You will be missed
