I love the studio version with all my heart and I just stumbled over this-it is an AWESOME version! The difference in the music makes this pretty much a different song. I can't believe I've never heard of this before!
I understand why people who like the studio version might not like this, but if you don't have any expectations of it, if you just listen to the song for what it is, I think more people would enjoy this version as well.
I think the Zeppelin feel comes from the heavily processed drums. Bonham was a fan of the processed drum sound and you can hear it on songs like When The Levy Breaks, and Moby Dick.
Listen to those vocals when he goes "and I don't understand why I sleep all god damn day, and I start to complain that there's no rain" Damn! SO chilling. Lost a great talent.
The song was written by the bass player. Its about his girlfriend that was depressed all the time. This tune was the original way they wrote it. The album version has such a happy tune to it; I always found that to be pretty funny
This version is a lot darker. The original version is almost in celebration of having a lazy life. This version is a complainant to that kind of life. "it rips my life away" takes on a whole new meaning.
I like the original version better simply because of the happy tune with darker lyrics that gives it a facade of happiness when the overall theme is melancholy, it gives the song more meaning because that's how it happens in real life. Depressed people pretend to be happy, and if they didn't say anything you'd never know something was wrong, and I like that reflected in the original version.
I fucking love this version, get some goddamn diversity in your melonhead, no rain is good, but overplayed, now if you don't like listening to the same song over and over on the radio or whereever, OH LOOKY HERE, a different and better version of the song...
I saw Blind Melon perform this live as an intro to the "regular" version on Saturday Night Live in 1994. I have searched and searched for a copy of that performance, but it does not appear to be found anywhere! I have tried to relate to several people how incredibly moving that performance was, but words can't convey how truly different this take on the song is.
Thank you for posting this!
Now, if I can just find that SNL performance... :-)
You either love it or hate. I for one love it.

hmmm... it's okay, I wouldn't say it's better than the regular version. It has more of the epic, slowed down feel that "Time" had.
M12i 3 years ago
Time? Since when was that song slow? One sec, gonna go have a listen of it...
...
Yup, just like i remembered, 'tis not a very slow song. You be trippin'.
Peace man
crazy8rgood 3 years ago
dude this song is SOO much more slower than the original.
manjoe2995 3 years ago
Yes, i never said it wasn't, but the guy i was saying that to had said that "Time", another song by Blind Melon, was slow, when, in fact, it is not.
