thanks for posting that remarkable women .... Etta Jones.....have a good trip home dearest....we never will forget YOU....God Bless You and keep you....Good Night.....
Etta James was great, too--but far more pop. Etta Jones started singing jazz in 1944 (even then sounding better than Billie when I compare their recordings of Duke's "Solitude"). All of her Prestige dates are absolute knock-outs. Some of her work after 1980 has over-doctored effects (amplified bass, reverb, etc.) and Etta's use of that "yodel"-cry. But she was still great and to the very end, "channeling" Billie on s recording released on the day of Etta's death, Oct. 2001.
Etta Jones (not James) was closer to Billie Holiday than anyone--except that she remained to the end a stronger singer, never showing the fraile, broken spirit that came through on Billie's last recordings (esp. "Lady In Satin"). Etta's signature recording was her unequaled "Don't Go to Strangers." "Crazy He Calls Me" was as much Dinah Washington's tune. This is from her last period, with Houston Person. My favorite is her recording of "If You Are But a Dream" with Gene Ammons ("Jug").
My dad, Goerge Devens played vibraphone on the original recording of this. Its a whole different song without his amazing tuned mallet. A favorite and wonderful song by Etta.
i made a typo...etta jones instead of etta james...for a moment i was puzzled. it stopped me in the moment and made it instantly large, mellow melancholic and overall beautiful. it moves me so...
thank you for playing, thank you that sung with such a soulful tone and thank you for posting. cris.
My wife and I first heard Etta at "The Place to Start" in Indianapolis, IN in the early 80's. Since then we have been fans. I wish we had known then how important she was to be in our lives as an entertainer. Thank you for posting this song.
what a blessing to hear this recording... i remember the first time i heard her sing (off a record)...stopped me right there...her vocal stylings really grab my heart...thanks for posting. Who are the FANTASTIC band members?
@flyinteractive Thank you for your comment. Next is comment from 6e6op .... I'm the bassist on this video. Thank you. She was not only a great great singer, but one of the nicest, sweetest people I've ever known, I played with her for ten years. personnel: Houston Person - sax Stan Hope - piano Peter Martin Weiss - bass Cecil Brooks III - drums

How many women are named Etta? How many are truly great female singers are there?
That's got to be, like what? a very small fraction times a very small fraction. The fact that Etta James and Etta Jones exist is pretty amazing. Of course this world is so large that things like that happen all the time, but it's still pretty neat. The world can be a pretty awesome place sometimes.
@Hijodelaisla you have to be tone deaf; what about the performance you dislike again. This woman was up there with lady day, Mcrae, Ella, vaugh, O'day, that's just my humble opinion!
I agree. Was checking out different versions of this song and it's amazing to me how many BAD renditions there are out there! The people who think they can do "their own spin" on something as difficult as this are just kidding themselves. The phrasing is so tied into the meaning of the lyrics, what's great about this version is the singer completely changed up the phrasing without losing the point of the words at all!
Etta Jones' recorded career extended from 1944 to October 2001 (when her Billie Holiday tribute album was released). The public was he loser for not knowing her better (or confusing her with Etta James). This is fairly late Etta--and the heaviest I've seen her. But there's evidence of her interpretive greatness (look for her early '60s dates on Prestige, esp. her duets with Gene Ammons (here it's Houston Person). "If You Are But a Dream" is indescribably beautiful.
I had it by Billie Holiday, but they axed it... I recorded it off my uncle's old record he left me before he died... someone claimed it as theirs... how can someone claim something my uncle owned!! I don't get it!
Etta Jones should be as famous as Etta James but I hope you aren't suggesting that Jones should have been more famous and James shouldn't be AS famous or that James is less talented. Etta James is a great singer that rightly deserves her fame and reverence as a blues great.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Etta James' voice is weaker than Etta Jones. If you don't know that, then you have no ears. Britney Spears is more famous than either. Fame means nothing.
They are the same level of talent and since I am jazz singer myself I have excellent ears thank you. YOU have no ears if you are going to deny Etta James' Talent. James and Jones both had remarkable gifts but one is not better than the other.
I am going to leave this alone at this point. It is clear you cannot express yourself in an intelligent manner and have to resort to name calling. They are both wonderful singers and to deny Etta James talent is what is truly moronic.

Moron...what do you know of talent? I heard you "sing" on your videos. You have no voice, no timing, no taste. I notice you removed your videos recently out of shame. HA HA!
HAHAHAHA....I was waiting for THAT predictable move(people who aren't very intelligent resort to bashing and bogus personal jabbs instead of making a coherent point). I haven't removed any of my videos, I don't know what your talking about. I am sure I'm just a no talent like Etta James, right! HAHAHAHA!! I don't have to bash you back because your own comments are making you look like an ass all on your own! Now back to something important.
Etta Jones rates right there with the best that have ever sang a note of jazz. Billie , Sarah, Ella, Betty, she stands along side those women as the best that have ever done it.
I can't believe there is actually a clip of her singing live finally up on YouTube. Thanks soooo much for this! I love her phrasing and style...a couple of my favorite songs are her versions of "Love is the Thing" and "Something to Remember You By"...I only wish she had recorded more. Thanks again!
Great video...THANKS! Etta was a very special and classy lady. Many fans as well as other jazz greats considered her a giant of jazz. This video really captures the beauty of her artistry. I really miss her.
Merci Madame! Vous allez nous manquer.

She puts more effort into embroidering the song with vocal schtick than getting the meaning across. "Like the leaf that shakes the bough"?

Jazz singers, the older they go, the better they get... this clip, along with those of ella and sarah, proves this theory...
I would like to see how Billie and Dinah sing when they age; but the sad fact is that they two died too young...

your right the voice is like cheese, the more aged it gets the harder it gets and the better it gets lol.
