  • I liked JC best in Taming of the Shrew. Remarkable acting. Find it on Netflix.

  • Very unusual edit.

  • 'little ego' awesome name XD

  • Sucks that this interview has edited out potentially other interesting bits about John Cleese, but whatever I have seen was very interesting and thought provoking. John Cleese is a very smart man. I like the bit when he was talking about celebrity and all that.

  • I love John and his work.

I am bamboozled by his belief in the notion we're here for some reason though.

That's very odd for a man as rational and smart as him to think such an absurd notion.

We have the illusion of design from Evolution and the only reason we're here is because nature chose us. We're only here to reproduce.

We can add artificial meaning to our life if we like but this idea that there's some outside force giving us some profound reason to be here... Silly.

  • It shows the arrogance of our race.

  • Or maybe... Not entire arrogance but also just our constant need to understand and add meaning to things.

It's the reason so many people won't get a lucky dip on the lottery.

The odds are the same whatever, you don't increase your chances by picking them yourself but it's this constant desire to have control.

  • i don't like to have a lucky set of numbers, i go for the luck dip. if you have a lucky set, miss doing the lottery one week and on that week your numbers come up...the likelyhood you'll commit suicide on the next ten years greatly increases

  • we do have meaning in our life, and reasons why 'we're here'

but they are all meanings and reasons WE create! :D

  • @EminemBase

well maybe for some people thats not so easily accepted?

  • Well maybe not but that doesn't hold any value in its actual truth.

Comforting doesn't = true. Nice doesn't = true. True = true. And it's true we're not here for any particular reason.

There are 12 planets just in our tiny little solar system and 11 of them are either too hot or cold to inhibit life. We're a rare product of nature.

We can only ponder reason because we're smart enough. We're here to reproduce, we can add individual meaning to our existence but there's not one pre-programmed.

  • @EminemBase

You know stuff! still, it's called belief for a reason.

you can be true to your opinion, but you can't claim your opinion to be true,

anyway, we can discuss the evolutionary theory, (whitch, I believe, for the record) learnings of the galaxy, and even religion, but this rare product of nature beliefs that it won't do much difference being under a talkshowclip on Youtube, Im not likely to go convince you of anything else.

  • Well I don't think anything I said in that comment was opinion.

It's true that something being comforting doesn't hold any intrinsic value on something be true.

It's true that there are 12 planets in our solar system, 11 of which are duds in terms of life.

It's true that we can only ponder our existence because of our level of consciousness, not shared by other animals.

And Evolution by the way is a fact. It's not a matter of believing it, it's true.

  • @EminemBase

If its a fact, why isn't it still happening to humans?

I belive there is a reason we are here, you may call me insane and deluded but thats what i belive. You on the other hand belive other wise, i'm not trying to change your mind i'm just saying that if we're actully talking about a reason we're here (aka God) you say you cant see him, touch him, or see any sign of him, there for his is fiction.

Do you think love is fiction? anger? sadness?

  • Because like many, you don't understand Evoltuion.

I know what you think. You're thinking humans are the top of the food-chain and we've come from apes like it's a progression.

Evolution has no will. A slug is as evolved as us. We didn't COME from Apes, we are Apees. We're the 13th Ape in the family.

  • What happens (over millions of years) is genetic mutations. Most are bad for the speicies (as they're random) but the good ones survives (hense, natural selection) so it's not like we're moving towards something.

Evolution is happening all aruond us. But it happens over millions of years, you can't witness it like a slideshow.

  • @EminemBase

Hmmm...i shall be reading some evoltuion stuff then. hahaha

Just thought i'd congratulate you for starting a debate on YouTube thats gone on for months XD

  • @hillgly Good to hear. It's the most important fact, it's how we got to this stage. Fascinating. It's also beautiful.

And thanks, I always do. It's in my blood lmao

  • Why are parts missing?

  • They're not "missing", I "edited" them. You may want to visit BBC site to see more...

  • i admire john cleese for one day just saying "i've had enough, i've achieved what i know i can, i'll work only when i feel i can and only if i feel inspired"..comedians today need to learn the art of quality over quantity..the comics who get a hollywood/bbc deal then saturate the market with substandard movies and tv shows, which dilute and destroy the purity of their art...it's not all about dollars..well being and and the pride in your work means far more..
