Cho may have been ok to stick up for her friends, but she never really realized what her friend did put other people in jeopardy. Also, if you are going to join a group like the D.A., it is understood that if someone tells, it could put a lot of people at harm. Cho's friend did and she did deserve the punishment. If it was someone else who did the hex on Marieta, Cho would of been man but I doubt she would of freaked out on that person as she did on Hermione.
