great story. I vividly remember reading short stories like this, "To Build a Fire", and "Harrison Bergeron" in middle school as a kid. Chilling ending to this one. Loved it.

I remember in 8th grade reading this story... we later had a memorization assignment and I chose The Monkey's Paw as my piece. The assignment was to do 300 words (every extra 100 = 30 extra credit points). I did a total of 2796 words and managed a 171 percent for the quarter grade. It was a magical day when I recited it- one of the best of my life.

I did this story for English class. :] I got when we had to answer some questions about it, b/c we had to infer...It asked what the third wish was, and the hint was for us to infer. I wasn't thinking correctly, but the third wish was for Herbert, the son, to be dead again...Then it asked why, but it was b/c the father didn't want to see Herbert torn up.

Myn60, the first wish the old dude wished for was for 200 pounds, which is money there in England. The second wish the old dude wished for was for his son to come back to life. His third wish was for his son to die again. It's confusing, but you need to read the book. I'm doing the story for a project in English class.

No, because the kid doesn't really come back to life...Maybe for a few seconds, but the third wish the old person wished for was for his song Herbert to be dead again. This scence was at the beginning.
