I have seen baracuddas that would dwarf this one, at least 6 1/2 feet and its head was about 1 1/2 feet long, that one took everything I caught, so I had to catch it with 110 lb steel leader.
I caught a barracuda once fishing off of Turks&Caicos. The guy was only about 2 1/2 feet but he was still wicked strong. Later we saw a barracuda about the size of these once and tried to catch it but it took our whole baitfish (baby grouper) hook and all in one bite.
No you can catch them and keep them if you like, but most fisherman release them as they are not considered much here for eating. We release all of ours that we catch.
Yeah, we have caught plenty of barracuda from the shore and by the bridges. matter of fact the biggest I have caught (over 50 inches) was from shore on a spinning rod using a silver spoon.
Ballyhoo are a great bait for cudas. You can buy them frozen or live at most tackle shops or catch them with a cast net yourself. Live pilchards are also a great bait.
You're crazy! I've seen barracuda bite through the back bone of a tuna in a single bite. You're VERY lucky it didn't take your hand off.
