  • you call that music? THIS, is music.

  • WOw so what silly i never see ever before

  • Wow, incredible piece. I've been hanging out with Youtube reviewing all the great Billy Taylor stuff...simply timeless. Man, this piece has so much flavor, contour and richness...if you're a "real musician" I'm sure you can understand what I'm expressing. It's a language that has a quality that you just don't much of these days, nice to run into this stuff. I'm hoping our young musicians understand what's going on here. Chords, riffs, straight ahead improvisations and embellishments.

  • @educapro Billy would have gotten a big kick out of your comments. Thanks so much.

  • groovin high??? lol

  • @Realismysoul Groovin' HIgh is a different song.

  • I wish there was more stuff like this on tv today

  • @885mrk Thankfully, we have YouTube.

  • @JazzVideoGuy

Yes sir! youtube is increasingly better than the "sleep box" especially the brain dead variety here in the UK

  • @goldsmithexile In a few years TV and the Internet will merge, and there will be no more sleep box.

  • What you say is great, Billy, but I came for this: 02:08

  • i wonder if i would get better if i shake my head like he does

  • it's gotta swing. improv is the core of playing with soul! #smartTuesday

  • Billy Taylor is proof that many jazz musicians were also extremely intelligent and articulate outside of the realm of music. I can't say that about every musician, but hearing Taylor talk and play just goes to show how much smaller that universe of music shrunk when he passed. Makes me wonder what would have come to fruition if he spoke with Ralph Ellison. May he continue to inspire swingers who happen to think through his toe tapping music.

  • These people are thinking too much, just play man.:)

  • @TopJimmyWinn Dude....You either learn by playing and making mistakes, or you carefully consider mentally what you doing, before you do it...both are valid, as you can see, If your playing has reached this competance lets have a demonstration of your approach and applaued it also.

  • You are right on with that comment 963821.

I've seen him and he can play.

  • find me people who play better today. Ha!

Thank you for your generosity Mr. JVG; and thank you Mr. Taylor.

  • @gix500 what a shame. He was a great soloist too.

  • @gix500 he does adds a few fills here in there, but ur right he doesn't get any choruses

  • Swing Daddy-O!

  • Thank you! Great post!!

  • this interviewer seems very hateful low key

  • @kalpal67 - I think the interviewer may simply feel uncomfortable, maybe for fear of embarrassing himself in this sophisticated environment? Didn't effect Billy in any case.

  • @kalpal67 On the contrary; and Billy Taylor clearly didn't think so either. You are the one that seems very hateful about the interviewer.

You are a "progressive" person, methinks.

  • heavy principles in the beginning-awesome man!-he is talking of mind music-awesome part of the brain intune with music-level above the known senses.

  • "Its gotta swing!! "

  • Where is televison and music programs compare to this, seems that there use to a time when broadcasters took viewers as people with a brain.

  • This real music man..fuck da bullshit they puttin out these days..i have never heard anybody play a damn clarinet like he did never!

  • that clarinettist is dam fine

  • A grossly underrated musician. A real jazz genius.

  • Jazz improv: Billy Taylor 1958..

  • GAH! Whats the actual name of the song?!

  • @BOSOX9004 Groovin' High

  • ...Wow!

  • Music is tast and all the artikels a meaning form the one who wright it i dont read opinions

  • *sigh* back when mainstream music had brains...

  • @beatchildproductions HAHA You would never hear mainstream musicians these days talking about rhythm, chords, tonality, or scales, because they have no clue. The only term they know is melody because their music style is solely based on a catchy melody that repeats throughout the whole song.

  • can somebody tell me the chords of the right hand from 2:18 until 2:22?

  • I guess you are asking for those "fourth chords" that billy uses to harmonize the melody..those chords works like block chords style cause they are played with both hands... he pick up the melody on the upper voice and construct fourths over it.. the starting melody is Bb so the rest of the chord is F C and G (played with da left hand) you can add another fourth (D)... but here he uses just a few of them. the last chords of this progression are some kind of sus.II-V to the I chord ...i think

  • i love this music that is just awesome

  • wow i must say "Groovin' High" sure sounds amazing when your high.

  • I wish it were still like this today, where music was still profound. Viewers who werent familiar with music theory would still be fascinated by what the dude has to say. Now days people wouldnt want to watch people talk about music theory. Its just press this button, turn this dial BAM a hit song.

  • @goneshootin22 there needs to be more jazz clubs

  • is billy taylor a member of the iluminati??

  • @MetalicRedd The Jazz Iluminati?

  • @JazzVideoGuy hell yeaa

  • @MetalicRedd C'mon Son!

  • @MetalicRedd C'mon guy,why do we have to see illuminati members everywhere, including musicians?I don't think Taylor is one of them...

  • @MetalicRedd lol what made you think that?

  • very very fantastic....

  • Thats some really cool swing daddio!

  • Good swinging stuff here

Ok to all the people who wants to aknowledge africa to the origins I would say that of course you can not deny black people having the most wonderfull contributions to the history and development of this music Jazz BUT music is music and to play MUSIC good that requires special conditions (good ears , inteligence etc.)that all humans have in common. If we aknowledge that first then we can deal with the rest later

  • dis shwings

  • Great jazz; Thanks once again Jazz Video Guy!

  • Listening to Billy Talyor is very informative, he seems to be immensely knowledgeable on Jazz theory and history, but also has wit and charm that is also essential to Jazz , wish I could meet him.

  • That is to say, Jazz and all of the deepest music like it, was fueled by those who have felt pain; and that if anyone in America's working class were to open their eyes, to see what's happneing to them, or what happens in third world countries we're responsible for bombing, that same pain could be felt and expressed through various forms of art like Jazz. Back then, it was definitely about color because negros were being lynched left and right, but nowadays, we all have something in common.

  • >was fueled by those who have felt pain

Which is why Jazz has such universal appeal.

  • @JazzVideoGuy

THE NAME OF THIS SONG IS GROOVIN'HIGH

  • @JazzVideoGuy im from Nicaragua, and appreciate those comments, music is life. Brings people together, if only the world realized what is going on right under their noses..., we are going trough many changes, musicians are rarely seen now a days, DJ's, jukeboxes, all over, i mean, it's painful, no money to pay musicans, jazz is a very light heart-beat, but it is beating.

Pray for us, so this dictatorship soon ends!

  • @JazzVideoGuy

I totally agree. I'm white, myself, but back then, the ratios were fucked up because the KKK wasn't even looked down upon. "Nigger" was an acceptable word, and the Jim Crow laws were still intact. In those days, more black people were feeling more pain. It has nothing to do with heredity, but situation.

  • @mussman717word I am sorry but Jazz doesnt belong to the black people. Blues.... maybe yes, but jazz - not. Jazz has the base of classic music (Gershwin.... is white omg he is even russian.... he is not american.)

  • @mussman717word If it weren't for blacks, we wouldn't have blues, jazz, or rock. That's just music.

  • slecht

  • gut

  • Joceeco not to be condescending but how is something created that's already there. The hurt, pain & sorrow of black people was already present during our initial displacement from Africa. It only made itself manifest in the form you see it in America per se. It was always there, so no credit to America in that respect. It's like the victim giving credit to the robber, where no credit was ever due. We as a people have always made music. Africa is the basis for who we are.

  • 2 things: Africans don't have a monopoly on hurt pain and sorrow, and, let's try to focus on what unites us. Obviously, most of the innovators of jazz were African-American, but not all. Benny Goodman, for instance. Son of jewish immigrants, dirt poor, made pretty remarkable contributions. Also, one of the 1st integrated bandleaders. 70 years ago, he was "color blind", maybe we can learn from him.

  • @jephthah007 Unfortunately Benny Goodman, the exception that confirmed the rule, mainstream Amercia 70 years ago with it's segregation, exclusion and cultural vampirism was the then norm. Don't feel threatened by the facts, they are the facts. Doesn't stop anyone or everyone appreciating true art at it's best.

  • I would say that jazz was certainly introduced to the general public by the African American community. Thus, Americans have invented it. There has always been a traditional divide amongst the rich and the poor in this country and a huge difference between Africans and Americans (black or white). I think we can all agree that Jazz was a creation of those in America who were victims of their environment, so to speak. Nowadays, that's not about color anymore. I mean, look at the president.

  • I have a new respect for clarinet :-)

  • YouTube might be the greatest website ever. Thanks, JazzVideoGuy!

  • Actually, the Gillespie tune they play is called "Groovin' High."

  • The clarinet player is Tony Scott.

  • who is the clarinet player?

  • Jazz. A gift from America to the World!!!

  • A gift from africa, not america. Jazz orginated from blues which originated from african music.

  • DylanKershaw Blues, Jazz, R&B, Soul Hip Hop...the African AMERICAN created and perfected this music The Blues originated from the pain and sorrow that the African slave and the Black American suffered on American soil, therefore making it AMERICA"S gift to the world!!!!

  • the explaination about havin report and improvisin' = right on.

  • yes, really thank you for posting the names too! helps me a lot!

  • Thank you Jazz Video Guy for posting the NAMES of the artists!!! Thank You!!!!

Lovin ' J. Cleveland on trombone and early Doc Sev on trumpet. I can hear a lot of people in his sound.

  • thank you jvg you da man

  • 4:27

    enough said

  • what was life before you-tube? brilliant! The guy talks jazz, deep like, all of a sudden says play it! Less than a second, and their leaning in. Groovin'!

  • love the blending. music at its finest!

  • Delicious!

  • Superb! My man on trumpet was killin' it! Hot ta def. Thank you for posting these!

  • This stuff where people judge the past by the standards of the present is so tedious. And even more tedious and rather sad when you realise that the band is mixed with a black leader and the expression "boys" was used for the all white big bands too. The interviewer is playing devils advocate , asking questions that those of us who don't know much about the mechanics of improvising on chord sequencies would probably ask. Nice piece of TV though, stuff we never saw in the UK.

  • superbe, magnifique & groovy!!!

  • So amazing!

Though it nauseates me to hear to the man interviewing Dr. Billy Taylor, referring to him, the members of the band, and Dizzy as "boys." Thank god times have changed for the better.

  • Hey moonbat, "the boys" was how they referred to any band back then. I guess "times changed for the better" doesn't include informed opinions.

  • I agree with you on that but who am I

  • dumb comment

  • Lawrence Welk used to refer to his band is "the boys". I don't recall ANY blacks in the band. It's true that many things change for the better, but sometimes I hate this century... everyone wants to get offended.

  • I love the guy smoking over there

  • How smokin was that! Anybody know who the guitar cat is here?

  • I'll just reply to myself for any other interested guitarists - it's Mudell Lowe!

  • what a smokin' tune, great players all

  • To me this is quintessential fifties

To me this is fifties culture

Of course I was never around to experience it for myself but what a wonderful time...if only jazz would become mainstream again, one can dream I suppose :S

  • sick! this kills it!
