this is crap give me MMA anyday . JKA style shotokan tournaments with no pads just gumshield and box is what i participated in years ago and i can honestly say that the calibre of fighter at the highest rung 15 years ago was better than this scrappy trash.
TKD as a competetive sport has ruined it's image as an effective martial art. This is garbage, I'm glad I never competed in this bullshit before I left.
Can anyone explain why Lopez is constantly tapping his head? Seriously....an honest answer. ....cuz it looks pretty pointless and kind of like a bad habit from when he had long hair and always brushed it aside...now he taps his skull....and all I can hear is "echo..echo..echo..."
The thing about Steven that nobody knows is that he is in soooo good with all the judges that it has been near impossible for him to lose a match that really means something. If you really watch the matches you will see points being scored on him that NEVER makes it on to the board. I use to look up to him until I witnessed the politics for myself that determines his wins. This Canadian CLEARLY scored at least 2 points on him, but it was a draw 0-0, with a clincher and leg holder winning?!? Hmm.
1. OK, so he is Spanish, pardon me.. I was watching the hogus for points not his back for letters.
2. Actually, in WTF/USTU tourney rules a point is scored when there is a resulting trembling shock (that's their fancy term for solid foot contact resulting in a loud bang). The only time Steven had that was when he was hitting the Spanish guys arm pads or back.
3. Technique is the only thing they (are supposed to) take into account. Somebody can kick all day and not win. No Tech/No Win
I dont really like the style that most taekwondo fighters show on the champion ships, from what i remember and learned in korea from my master it is an ART(not hit and charge) of legs combat body and mind in one and having total control over your actions and BALANCE, here u can just see sumo fighting connected with some box and som ok kicks later on but generaly, people plz dont LAY on each other,
@g5style1 I feel you on that I said the same awhile back- Yea he wins which is fine, but his style and way of winning is ugly... (but in the end its about the W)
But in this fight I'm surprised he didn't get some of those points they looked like good ones to me.
@g5style1 YES, YOU WILL... you are totally right. I have had the honor(?) of co-training with Steven and his family for many years at their school in Sugarland (my co-owner of my school grew up and learned TKD with him) Every time (EVERY TIME!), I sparred with him I got hurt. Not being kicked in the hogu so hard that I got hurt, but rather him cut kicking my legs, hitting my back and clenching me so hard that I came from his school with bruises everywhere but the point areas!! X^(
Steven Lopez is a 5- time world champion and a 2- time olympic champion. But he's not a master of Taekwondo. You don't just know only sparring, have a 5th dan black belt and think you can be a master. You have to be well rounded in the system to have that title.
@eugene680 but men i have so much respect for the belts...but none of thouse 5th dan fights like hadi, steve, and others....5th dan masters, there are many in the world, but there is only one champion
omg i watch his in hope to see how fast they are for the 2010 junoir worlds and really that was pretty sad lol i fought with the new system they are using and loved it but this guy just looks bad
The problem is not Lopez. The problem is WTF taekwondo and the rulesets. Being passive is awarded too much. No punch to the head makes the whole martial arts aspect moot.
I could not finishing watching this video. Too boring. It comes down to this. If you had one last sporting event to watch, would it bjj worlds, muay thai, ufc tittle bout or this match? I'll give him credit for winning a lot of tournaments, but Lopez is not good for tkd's fan base.
Listen guys, I'm amazed that he is 5-times WC and 2-times Olympic Champion. It's only the fewest that get this far. Sometimes he fights fair, and sometimes not. Sometimes his fights are exciting, and sometimes not. At least these things are something mutual for every fighter.
did anyone see how he won against Irans Mehdi in Copenhagen? he got one point, while Mehdi got 4, and while all other fighters got only kyongo for punch in face, Iran got a whole minus (why?) - wit two lawyers in the freakin court?! that's how Lopez won against a disqualified Mehdi! so dont bullshit bout he's the best.. Watch him against Mehdi... Lopez got his ass whopped! and lost some teeth
I've heard it for what, 12 years now? Steven sucks. He sucks so much that the WTF keeps changing the rules in the hopes that somebody can beat him. He sucks so much that he has one loss in international competition in a decade or so. He sucks so much that his siblings and teammates are Olympic and WC medalists. Like him or hate him (and only an idiot would hate him,) he's the greatest taekwondo player in history.
seriously! how much more jealous these losers can get? stop hating the guy! if he was only leftfoot, how he would win 3 medals at Olympic Games and 5 World Championships?
what else he has to do to prove himself? get real guys! he adpts to every single fight!
I totally agree with you. Even if his fight style isn't as "amusing" as when you watch Koreans or any other ... BUT, he knows how to win. And he keeps amazing people :)
Mr leftfoot Lopez he sucks, he was lucky to win at all, I saw the match with Michaud where Lopez gives Michaud a "headkick" when he is offbalance and almost on the ground and get 3points after telling the refree
Notice that he's holding the Canadian's leg right after the Canadian made the counter backspin. And then he let him go to kick him in the face.
And the quarter against the Iranian fighter, omg ... the Iranians get kyong-go for kicking low - but how the hell is he supposed to kick "high" when Lopez always lifts his left leg?
"And the quarter against the Iranian fighter, omg ... the Iranians get kyong-go for kicking low - but how the hell is he supposed to kick "high" when Lopez always lifts his left leg?"
Kicking someone in the face when they're off balance, if you have the reaction time to do it, sounds like a pretty effective attack, and judging from the blood spraying from Michaud's nose it was.
@jocelyndeanna27 I doubt it considering everyone in taekwondo says "dan". Not "degree".

1. The guy is Spanish. It clearly says ESP on the back of his uniform.
2. There were also many points that Steven scored that were never put on the bored, it evens out.
3. Steven won because he was more aggressive. Being aggressive is also another thing they take into account when deciding the winner.

If you have ever beaten steven lopez in a match thats when you can say w.e you want otherwise..quit your bitching.
Michaud was off balance and not guarding himself thats not being cheap its being smart fighter and taking advantage of faults.
Lopez has a strategy that works...the past decade he's proved to overcome every challenge thrown at him. He adapts better than most fighters..
