they got some thing new out real cool call (you rock guitar midi controller ) this will work with th vst like lmms and fruit loops look into this you will be like holy crap
You didn't need to hit the start button at the beginning of the video-- JACK audio is broadcasting all the time.
What hitting the start button does, is essentially just start the clock signal that programs like Hydrogen, Ardour, Rosegarden, etc. can use to sync operations. In a non-time-based program like Rakarrack, it's completely unnecessary.

Despite other opinions about Linux, IMO it is the most robust OS on the market (...yes, it is free).
Considering this post, it has been most useful and since posted will need updating: it is not quite like explained and I found my way through, due to updates to the software since posted.
Linux fucking sucks.. look at all the rouble and time you loose just in configuration to record... and the program just "does the job" but its not professional, and doesnt give you a professional final product.... Linux is for geeks hwo like to get crazy playing with the terminal and configuring stuff.... leave it for informatics students and let the muscicians work with themost PRACTICAL AND PROFESSIONAL TOOLS!
@DiegoINSOMNIA yeah, well atleast you are smart so much that you can figureout its not for you. Too bad you cant figureout how to use it, cuz once some1 feels linux, he never goes back to windows! Guess on what OS are youtube servers running?
sorry noob question... i have my pedal ME-25, and i would like to use it to record using audacity. usually, ppl would use the usb port to record. but i , unfortunately dont have the usb cable. so as an alternative i decided to use the mic port of the comp and connect it to my pedal's phone(output) port. the thing is, idk how to make my computer detect the pedals sound. :( help pls?
Also worth mentioning that jack wont be able to connect to the audio server if you have your browser open and have watched a video since opening it, just close your browser and try again and it should work.
This was a pain in the arse for ages for me because i didnt know how to do this at all so obviously i had this video open while trying to do it, which was stopping jack from working.
@71GA I don't have a special audio card (yet) - I am currently just plugging the guitar right into the line in. Its on a medium spec'ed laptop and it does fine when playing with just rackarack. I haven't used it at the same time as, say, ardour though.
@rohanr2 It would be really good if you would use profesionall audio interface. Is there any time delay betwen you actually hitting the string and sound appearing on your headphones? Thanks.
@71GA There isn't any delay when I am playing around, but It does happen after long usage or if there are a lot of other applications running at the same time. I've ordered an external sound card but it hasn't arrived yet. This setup works if you are just playing around, but for serious work you'd for sure need something to buffer correctly.
Hi rohanr2! Great video, very clear and helpful. I just got the whole thing working (with Ardour) and was amazed by the quality of the effects in Rakarrack.
Got a question for you. I used Behringer UCG102 to plug my guitar into the PC (Ubuntu 10.04). For some reason, I only heard the left channel with only UCG102 plugged in. Once Rakarrack starts, some presets are stereo, some are mono on left only and some are louder on left than right. Beats me...
Same trick works on adour what for mastering wouldn't really matter. But for producing it makes a difference, and for recording it all by you're self it makes a hell of a difference. But nice work futher on I forget this connection trick and exactly needed it. thanks
Assuming there isn't something wrong with your speakers or something - think of the jack app as normal cables. You'll need to have input go into input and output go to to output. A guess would be you don't have a "line" from rakarrack to your speakers - meaning in "Jack Control" you don't have a connection between rakarrack and your system "playback_1". It's hard to debug stuff in youtube comments, might look for a good audio forum :-/
this fucking JACK app is driving me crazy i don't know how to configure it. I want to use all these cool Linux tools but they seem to be so complicated. please help. I really don't want to go back to Windows. To be honest the audio applications are the only that keep me chained to that shitty OS. I already have rakarrack installed. When i strum strings on my guitar the signal is coming since i can see the wave form but i can hear anything coming out of the speakers. It's driving me crazy help
thanks for the video mate much apreciated i actually use guitarix and also there is a tar package for ExEf (you can compile it easily) wich is pretty cool for distortion ..
@spicey009 I actually just plug right into the line in using an adapter. I am going to buy a sound card an a microphone soon (as I want to get a bit more serious), but if you are just messing around, plugging right in works well!
I am so mad. I have been tryinf for two weeks now to install this daily. I am going nuts. It is not in my synaptic package manage, and it is not in the software center. I tried the tar download but dont know what to do. Can someone please make a video on how to install this and why isnt it just automatic package install. I dont see why it has to be so fucking hard. damn......
What gear do you need to do this? I have a guitar, and instrument cable, obviously, so what else do I need? and where do I plugin my guitar? Much appreciated.
hey brother!..im learning to do this..i used to use cubase but cant nomore...im having trouble recording at the same time musics playing(in audacity)...can u help me out with this?...thanks btw, nice video!
@timothypnolan indeed, ardour is awesome. It's what I use to do actual playing. I just needed something resize-able for the movie. There are several videos on youtube for ardour, and I highly recommend the program (I mentioned ardour in the blog post that goes with this movie). Anyway, cheers timothy - and you are right :)

Ever tried just hitting the random button over and over again? I've come up with some really, REALLY interesting sounds that way.

Excellent vid! :)
You say something abt playing music at the same time. This is what I do:
1) Guitar setup exaclty like yours with 1/4" line input for guitar to rakarrak
2) One channel of Rakarrak output (headphones) goes to my hi-fi (eg. aux left)
3) One channel from mp3 player with mono backing track goes to my hi-fi (eg. aux right)
4) Now my stereo plays guitar/backing on left/right resp.
5) Record from hi-fi headphone jack, replace mono backing with orig.
Thanks again - cool channel!

I set everything up as you have shown in the video but as soon as i click record on audacity i get an error message saying
'Error while opening input device. Check input device setting and project sample rate'
Any idea what could be causing this?
