At my college in 1970, there was a houseful of girls some of whom I dated, that played and turned me on to her. In fact one of them told me all the words to Stony End which I could never quite figure out. So her music is both great to listen to and provide pleasant, cherished memories.
It's a good song but not some hidden gem. the hidden gem is Praise the Country or something like that... I just wish she were a little more subtle and her songs sounded less like musicals but then I still love her.
I am just passionate about Laura Nyro's music.Just hope she finally gets in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She is one of the greatest songwriters of all time and her voice has such a wonderful quality. She passed on much too early at 47 and wish she could been around in my whole lifetime. I miss seeing her at the Bottom Line and Central Park. At least I can listen to my own recordings and what I have on You Tube. Goodbye Joe is one of her most touching.
Jesus. My wife's name is Joe (yes, spelled like that). We met in the highlands of Scotland 12 years ago. Now, out of the blue, she's left me for a new life in Manhattan. This song is killing me.
I was listening to stoned soul picnic from the 5th deminsion. then i thought i would wikipedia them to see when they wrote this song . To my amazement , i learned about Laura Nyro , and that she wrote that song plus many, many more for lots of other artist like 3 dog nite , blood sweat & tears , and more . I have spent some time listening to her music . And with all seriousness this girl is powerful & talented with a voice like an Angel...... May she sing in GODS chorus ...
@pajado75 I totally know what you mean. You're never the same after you realize not only how many of those hits she wrote, but had an amazingly soulful voice, and sweet too...I will love her forever....GOD would have to have her in the choir!
`Goodbye Joe' is my favorite track as well from `The First Songs' LP (Did not know it as early as `Not Just A New Discovery' although I knew of Laura Nyro as a songwriter since '68.)
So sad with talent like this Miss Nyro was not a household name in her lifetime.
My favorite song from her first album. I think "Goodbye Joe" has the most beautiful lyrics of any song on the album. "...like a sunrise that rose without warning...we walked on a Manhattan morning..." It's remarkable that someone not even 20 years old could have understood, much less written such sentiment. These lyrics are a taste of the beauty of what was to follow on songs like "Emmie", "Brown Earth" and "Chinese Lamp". Poetry. Thank you!

Beautiful, sweet, romantic tune from the Legendary Lady. If I were Joe, I would never have left her!

My first love's name was Joe. I wrote the words on my notebook. He found the notebook and laughed. I was mortified!

This song has so much special significance being a Harlem tune which is where I am from.
I love the beautiful changes in this song and Laura's voice is gorgeous.
I loved her so much and am heart broken that she is no longer here to create such gorgeous fare.

by the way, I remember the title to be "Good by Joe," not "Goodbye Joe" as you have it here ...
