  • Quoted: "Dr. Klopping (CSD-Fremont superintendent now retired) gave a presentation about the deaf school. He stated that in California, 93% percent of deaf and hard of hearing students are mainstreamed and 8% are attending State schools. Students at State shool succeeded 40% on the Exit exam while 8% of mainstreamed succeded on Exit exam. I have to admit, shocked to hear this and asked myself what the hell is going on!!! Only 8% succeeded!!! I knew mainstreamed does not work for most of them!

  • @deafnet Yes, I've seen Klopping state that same statistic, and it is quite telling, indeed!

  • So..........have you read any of the ac

Hi Dr. Don... Mainstreaming may not work academically for every deaf student. I strongly believe deaf tutors make the best teachers. Reason: In 2003 I applied for a tutoring position at an elementary school and the school's principal gave me a chance to tutor a deaf student 3 hours per day in Language and Reading. The deaf student, now in high school, is taking college-prep classes. He took the ACT last fall and scored 26. His writing has improved dramatically.

  • what kind of language and mode of communciation in test?

  • @ASLteachesUS The test is in written English. No information of the test-giver uses sign language or not with Deaf kids taking the test.

  • Mainstream is a Violence,...

  • @JeromeCain68 You're correct. In fact, Branson and Miller had a GREAT article titled "Sign Language, the Deaf and the epistemic violence of mainstreaming". YT won't let me post the link in the comments, but you can google the title and find it.

  • @DrDonGCSUS, OH?! Got to find it! Thanks for its' information that I can get to learn more,...

  • There are recent studies proving that oralism is a failure! It is very unfortunate that those deaf oralists still carry stubborn streak for the rest of lives.

  • I was in "mainstream" before it became mainstream. I never had interpreter in classes for 4 years in hearing high school. Maybe a notetaker or two for difficult courses like Latin or Biology. 1967 to 1971 - those were difficult years in mainstream. It did tear me up inside as it was challenging trying to be "accepted" in hearing world. I was in oral school from 1956 to 1967. All the time wasted on stupid oralism!

  • It's been a while since I took mathematics class, but don't you actually mean the median? If I remember correctly, the median refers to the middle of the range of whatever it is, while the mean refers to the average when you add all numbers in the range and divide it by the number of units in the range? I think you got it wrong in your vlog when talking about the mean.

  • @Picard900 No. Talking about the statistical mean. For tests like this, this is the 50% point. The problem with skewed distributions is that the mean does not show the 50/50 split.

Median is a different concept. That is when you have a range of numbers, such as 1, 3, 4, 7, 10, where 4 becomes the median. Useful for some things, but not in this case.

  • @DrDonGCSUS I apologize for my mistake. You're right. I did read the article, and it helped to refresh my memory on statistics. I did remember the difference between the median and the mean, and which to use in different cases.

  • What people dont understand is that teachers really do see us as learning disabled

  • Told ya. I already knew this but I think alot of people didnt understand what i was trying to say.

  • Yes, you said it all!! Good vlog! Interesting statistics you shared. Honestly, I knew, and still know the hearing people will not listen to us. They ignored us for years, and still do. About government will be suffered, yes you're right ... because they will have to keep paying deaf people the SSI, SDI ... whatever they get the check from the government, just because the deaf children are too stupid (not at their fault) to get the job careers as teachers, professionals, etc.
