  • i broke my g-string when i fingered a minor

  • 1:47

  • Practice? Pshhh

  • talk talk talk-... xD

  • I seriously don't get it. This guy seems like he has hidden knowledge in his playing, because I literally do not understand how it's possible to write such good solos.

  • Friedman: "never play at a speed you're sloppy at. Build it up. "

Shawn Lane: "Try playing fast even if you're sloppy, and then gradually clean it up."

    ??

  • @MapleLeafAce I've gotta go with Friedman on that one...

  • @beowulf20s Yeah me too. As much as I respect Lane, his method doesn't seem very effective. Training sloppy will just make you play sloppy.

  • When was this from?

  • Haha, one gig is worth 20 days at home? ...haha ridiculous bullshit xD

  • @KonkreteXXX sure,you know more than marty friedman.fuck off..

  • @cromaticas yeah its called experience. NO I dont say I have more of that than friedman. I just know what I experienced

  • @KonkreteXXX yeah, experience.that thing friedman has done all his life, and you probably a few years at most.sure, you have experienced more than him.of course.

  • @cromaticas Cant u fuckin read?

  • @KonkreteXXX you called his advice rediculous bullshit.are you stupid?lol,what a troll.dont bother replying..

  • to all marty die hard fans : How rich is marty friedman ?

  • guitarist wisdom!

  • Marty Friedman is better in his own band. I prefer Jeff Yound in Megadeth.

  • @HaohmaruOfTheWind seriously no offence but Jeff Young was only on one album and his solos wern't amazing and you couldn't hear half of them because of all the reverb. im not trying to say your opinion is wrong its just that i would like to know why you prefer Jeff to Marty.

  • @campion95 He obviously appreciates Jeff's work. Jeff Young is pretty underrated, he burns.

  • In addition to this, it's a good idea to aim at solving a particular problem you have when exercising like this. For example, if you're bad at skipping strings, make up a little lick like the ones he showed involving string skipping. =)

  • man dude is their tabs to this cause i cant see exactly what hes doing

  • if marty fingered a girl she would explode

  • @cnarro890 someone else already said that

  • @Oblivion3200 mmmmm i dont know

  • Megadeth died a little bit when he left. Oh well

  • Wanna get better? Do trills. Biggest advice I ever got and it has improved my playing three fold since I painstakingly went through them last May.

Seriously do trills. Look up Pebber Brown's vids on trills. You will be amazed at what you can play after a few MONTHS of doing them.

    Keep practicing yall :D.

  • Great guitar Player EVER, he should have stayed in Megadeth.

  • which dvd is this from?

  • woah thats weird i read that fart comment and then i farted.

  • i've always played better live than when practicing. been playing or 11 years and i've definitely found out that when you're live the adrenaline and energy makes you play much better. i've pulled off some solos on stage that i could never do at home (w/ and w/o backing tracks), and then i see the videos and i'm like, 'how the fuck did i do that??'. it's exactly what marty says - when you're practicing nobody's paid to watch you so you don't put in a 100%.

  • I just farted.

  • @iRewel Ok, good.

  • was that an exercise or a world class mini-solo??

  • notice how he plays it clean and it's still perfect, marty rules \m/

  • 1:50 ala ke rica cumbia del peru jajajaja

  • Friedman is GOD!

  • Marty Friedman rubbish ????? WTF!!! He is the consummate master of exotic scale playing and technique FFS! Shit a brick. What is it with people these days, they think just because its old its worthless? or the player is crap? Since the mid 90s there has not been ONE standout player of guitar worthy of note.

  • @instinctfx may I direct you to the band "Animals as Leaders" ? check it out, your mind will blow up, in a good way. Oh, and Marty is absolutely god, no doubt about it, I'm not trolling :P just recommend new stuff for the finer fans of great guitar playing.

  • @slayerfanatic666 Just checked them out, have to agree, it was cool.

  • he's right

  • @dirtydonki

    No- John Mayer is rubbish.

  • awsm............

  • 2:07 = sword of the warrior

  • slayer666metallica, i couldnt have said it better myself

  • don't get your hands wet in warm water, but the forearms and elbows (joe satriani is known to do this)... the water will only make your fingertips to get soft and you may lose your precious calluses... ;)

  • I've found it helps to get your hands warm, loose, and limber before playing. Cold hands are stiffer and more likely to cramp. Run them under some warm water and work them gently for a minute or two to relax the muscles, but be sure to dry them quickly and thoroughly after, or they'll get cold again.

  • @NorrisChuckling I'll try that playing with cold hands is torture and I cant play shit

  • A great exercise is Red Hot Chili Peppers "snow"

  • sword of the warrior

  • when I do this exercise my hand cramps

  • Might want to slow down then. Don't want to injure your hand. Stretch your hands out first, too.

  • where is this off of?

  • the essential marty friedman

  • amazing!

    hes underrated!

  • In America maybe but in Japan (where he lives now and has had a TON of success) he's like Heavy Metal Jesus lol.

  • him and paul gilbert are enjoying some amazing success in japan. i love the jam sessions they do together. none of it ever seems forced. just 2 guys havin fun.

  • marty friedman no kontolssss.....

  • what video is this from?

  • When?

  • Picture this: Marty Friedman with a Les Paul.

  • nooooooooooooo!

  • Why not?

  • i don't think that would fit.

  • hahaha... he uses one now just look up his wikipedia photo

  • lol

  • lmao i thought the other guys was tom arya

  • Listen to what he says at 2:38. There are many people I have seen and heard that don't.

  • Yeah same man,

  • Dragonforce xD

  • i'm not sure actually, on one shawn lane video he was sayng to start of slow, then go a bit faster, then go really fast (and cleen it up later) cos otherwise you kinda build a mental block for going very fast, which has kinda helped. but maybie he is wrong O.o

  • Yer i dont think there is a right/wrong. I learnt to play fast the "Shawn Lane" way (by accident) because I just get bored but it depends on the personality of the guitar player. Marty is a very clinical thinker and precise person so he is more likely to be religous about that approach to guitar, Shawn was more of a cool cat and "hey, its all good" kind of guy

  • Thats only correct in sone instances. There was a John Petrucci video where he said that if your having trouble with a certian speed, you could try to play it 10 - 20 bpm faster and then go back down and it should be easier. Thats like the only way it would work.

  • This depends on if there is a problem with your technique when playing something. If your fingers are doing it wrong, then playing it faster won't be any better.

  • try playing it on lower notes and progress up the neck , it get progressivley easier every time you play through a good 18-20 frets worth of arpegios, although i recomend starting slower

  • what he said?

  • Even his "exercises" are so melodic. This guy is awesome.

  • @heero7yui Hah I was just gonna say :P

  • (pulling teeth) Anesthesia 2:09

  • Kind oif

  • im glad he is not one of thoose who use a new guitar all the time to show of how rich they are

  • i have been around teaching gigging clinician etc. played with some famous people big deal. and have seen a lot and have been a round and in my opion Friedman is a unique player yes. not your average musician

  • check out rust in peace and countdown from megadeth?

    then you'll say!!! XD

  • MARTY = GOD

  • Fuck yea

  • sorry guys...

what means "at speed that you play slopping"

what means slopping, slappy.i don't understand this phrase

  • Playing sloppy means playing unclean, with a lot of mistakes. Goofing off.

  • Gosh that's like the coolest sounding exercises only marty would come up with crazy phrases like that without even thinking

  • Marty is a class act.

  • DerekSheep>>> Shut the fuck up brainless.

  • but you have to admit he can ask questions that he read over thrice before he did this interview

  • well yea it's production, it'd be pretty annoying if he didn't have an answer ready and stumbled on his words and stuff

  • Is there any tabs or video lessons on this?

  • did u find tabs yet?

  • Comment removed

  • your skills drop 10fold from playing in your bedromm to playing infront of 100's of people. only after you know. many shows will you be able to play your full "bedroom skill" infront of other people

  • thats true...i shred a lot and im very good and my dad respects me a lot for my playing but one time i played at the talent show at my school and i could not shred.....it was like i never learned.....but i can do it now....and actually i use my nervousness to my advantage and increase my speed but it kinda makes me sloppy

  • haha your spot on man!

i gig on the regular and im 17, still in school and shit so its normally on the weekends. i practice all i can during the week... and it ALL goes to shit when you get on stage if you can't control your nerves! I'm getting better at correcting mistakes often made live, but i don't think people realize there's a huge difference between 'bedroom shredding' and delivering it live 100%.

  • only two reasons. nervous and conscious.

  • @slayer666metallica yeah man same playing sit down and standing up

  • @slayer666metallica

absolutely agree man, I gig a little bit, I'm also 17, and it's sooo much harder to play fast and clean live than it is sitting on a chair in your room

  • @slayer666metallica yea man you said it all. I think when playing live it really just depends on who is in the crowd and how the crowd is acting nd reacting with the music. But yea man you said it all right there.

  • @slayer666metallica Yeah, I agree dude, I've only gigged 3 times, truth be told, but every time I play the same as I do at my house, but I'm pretty boring hahah

  • thats true,when I play in bedroom,you feel nothing.

but if Iplay live,my hand start shaking like shit man.

    i dunno why.

  • @TheFarriesmetalhead IKNNOOOWW!! but i got over that too good job

  • but after a few minutes,my hand stop shaking.

  • @slayer666metallica i here you man

  • @slayer666metallica Yea I was gonna say your only 17..when your 21 a beer or 2 helps it all go away. Actually i've been finding beer makes me play worse, I've been sticking to wine lately.

  • @slayer666metallica

Yeah eventually you get used to it.

Took me a year of public stuff to get used to it.

I find I still sometimes fuck up live worse than I do in my bedroom; it's a plague.

  • @slayer666metallica hi dude. i know your trouble.. i'm a band and at my first gigs in bar 'n' stuff i was so freakin nervous that i'd forgot lyrics (i'm a lead singer/ solo guitar ) . After 2 years or so i developed a system, and rather a stupid and risky one.. yeah. Before a gig..like 2 hours ahead i get a little buzzed with 1-2 shots of vodka or whatever. This helps alot. The secret is to drink way ahead of the gig NOT right befor it starts. By doing this your nervousness will dissappear.

  • @HoriaAkiroh i like to just get hammered

  • @pzqlak That kind of routine is going to wear you down pretty quick. Especially if your band really kicks off and you start playing every other night or so. Probably best to try and get used to overcoming the nerves without getting wasted. Also, players often get sloppier without even realizing it when they're wasted. You don't want to think you're having a killer gig only to have someone else tell you you were hacking it up.

  • @VintageburstStandard Know what your saying, but i dont drink cuz im nervous, i drink because its fun to play drunk in bars.

  • are you easly the best guitar player in your school????????????

where are the videos that support what you wrote???????????????????????

    first, upload your own videos.

second, post your comments about yourself...

    third, our comments about you...

and then we will see if you are the best.

  • the point is putting yourself in a situation where you will fix miastakes quicker since there is all the urgency and you want to get comfortable playing for crowds.

  • great vid but it ended a little early! i wanna know what he said!

  • Was this on a DVD that came along with a little tab book that told you what notes he was playing?

Or is this like a public interview where we have to find out ourselves?

  • "in the bedroom noones gonna hear if u make a mistake" =] Wanna bet?

  • Hahaha, that's a good one. But sure there's gonna be more people listening your mistakes in a gig.

  • hey guys theres a marty shirt selling on ebay, just type in marty friedman and it'll pop up.

its pretty sick if you ask me..

  • Those arpeggios sound a bit like Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth), Cliff's solo.

  • Actually it's the other way around. The intro of Anesthesia is a quite simple arpeggio and that's why they sound alike.

  • Ok..

  • heh.. thats kinda the beginning of the solo in cacophonys-sword of the warrior... stupid song but GREAT solo

  • dave is so sloppy with soloing. amazing rhythm though. his co guitarists are always better. marty friedman is beyond belief. this guy ralely influenced a lot of the exotic modes i play, but dissing kirk hammett is pretty pathetic. we dont know the level of his technique. only by what we were on minute long solos on metallica songs, so until he put out a solo album, ppl shouldnt talk shit. bottom line man.

  • Agree one hundered percent. Well said supafly11.

  • check out his solo on wake up dead, rude awakening

and his solo on she wolf. they are NOT i reapeeat NOT sloppy

  • ill agree with that man. i just think hes sloppier than she should be on a lot of recordings, only with lead. his co guitarists are always far superior, especailly freidman, but i give dave a lot of credit. hes the best rhythm player out there.

  • dude shut the fuck up u know nothing

  • haha ok asshole.

  • "kirk is better then dave and marty" <----HAHAHAHAHAH, i've never heard a guy saying some bunch of shits. And it's "than" , not "then".

  • Man are you kidding? I'm a Metallica fan and even I know Dave and Mary are better than Kirk.

  • their solos are also much better than kirks!!

  • Well actually I like the odd Kirk solo (for example Unforgiven, One, Master of Puppets) but in general there's no real technique in most of his solos. Just pentatonic scales

  • dave? no. marty, yes. i can at least live with that one.

  • have you ever picked up a guitar??

  • Dave is better the Kirk, Yngwie is better then the guy down the street, Van Halen is better then Donald Trump, this is not a sport, it's music. Why don't you ask them to run a potato sack race.

  • Right on dude. Its crazy how people are always comparing, and get all pissed off if you dont think "their guy" is the best... then suddenly all these great musicians suck.... lol. Thaks for a lttle bit of sense here bro... right on. Peace.

  • wtf dude, why isn't he in megadeth still dammit

  • got sick of metal 24/7 which of course all Dave wanted to play, I dunno, im kinda happy with Broderick right now

  • cause dave said, we need to return to our heavy metal thrash roots and get away from this alternate shit. and marty said "okay well, just so you know im moving to japan and wont be in the band any, konichiwa i wish you luck."

  • you can compare that shitty "Kirk" to Dave or whatever, but we all know when we're talking about Marty.

Both of'em are no fuckin match for Marty!

  • You're a n00b...Marty is all about Improv...the solos he did for Rust In peace were improvised once then he just used them..

  • mustaine has a scratchy guitar playing style but is a great guitarist none the less some of that is what made megadeth so great.. Marty is a perfectionest and succeeds greatly in that. marty is probabally a better guitarist however when freidmen and mustaine trade off like in hanger 18 well do i really have to say anything

  • heres my opinion.

    1. Mary Friedman

    2. Dave Mustaine

    3. Kirk Hammett

i love metallica and megadeth, but thats just what i think guitarist-wise.

Marty was the best lead guitar megadeth EVER had.

  • Spot on.

  • i dunno broderick is pretty fu**in good man, skill-wise he is better than marty, experience and improv-wise and feel no, but, he can riff hard.

  • marty was a heavy influence for his playing style, so naturally all the old friedman solos are gonna be flawless live and we can expect grreat things from him.

  • I have a prediction...

All those who argue about metallica and megadeth will look like idiots.....

  • I concur

  • Are you crazy, Dave plays circles around Kirk, I just saw him play last night, and he ripped ASS!!! Kirk is great, but Dave is way more metal in his soloing and rythemm, plus he doesn't lean on that fucking WahWah every fuckin song, like Hammet...lets hear some of those Metallikrud solos with no Wah.

  • marty is a god...... dave and kirk...sucks

  • Ok, ok. I've commented on this discussion before and I'll say what I always do: Kirk's playing on Kill 'Em All beats out Mustaine's leads anywhere. Period. Tone especially. Listen to Mustaine on Rust In Peace it's scratchy. Friedman on RIP on the other hand is some of the best playing ever. Technique, tone, feel it's just insane. And at the end of this video: has anybody seen the dvd of Marty's with those 100 patterns he talks about on it? It's the 99 Guitar Secrets dvd..out in japan?

  • Are you crazy, Dave plays circles around Kirk, I just saw him play last night, and he ripped ASS!!! Kirk is great, but Dave is way more metal in his soloing and rythemm, plus he doesn't lean on that fucking WahWah every fuckin song, like Hammet...lets hear some of those Metallikrud solos with no Wah.

  • i guess because dave only wrote the fukin kill em all album

  • you shoulda done some research. those kill em all solos were dave mustaine solos, kirk copied them note for note and used them for that cd. so all he did is play daves solo and played it worse than dave woulda. and you can find that video by google video searching it

  • In my opinion, Kirk is better than Dave, But Marty is better than both!

  • i really think that mustaine is really much better than kirk... just listen to him the only you'll hear is "wah-wah this, wah-wah that"... i mean... mustaine is a good solo player because he got a freaking speed for pentatonics and very good skills with the pick... either way i consider friedman as the best guitarrist of the moment...

  • See at the end how he said he wrote them all on a list? I'll bet you could find the list verrry soon...

  • Very Talented and under appreciated

  • not too famous in America. but very big in japan now

  • not too famous in america?? yea right man but he is bigger in japan though

  • well, he is famous..but i am saying comparatively to others like Van halen or Vai, maybe he is not too well recognised~ heheh

  • yea thats true

but wonder why he doesnt get the recognition he deserves?

  • yea ! that beats me to the thoughts too
