They did it to prevent a riot, they had already thrown stones, fired fireworks, and one -tried- to throw one of those big "bomb" fireworks, but failed, instead he got his fingers blown. Personally I like the way the police handled. If you don't want to get arrested, listen to the police. The police just saved the rest of the demonstration.
