  • Flat colour tv screens and webcams in 1968!

  • @Quex01 How about those iPads at 1:18 !

  • "I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do."

  • on 1:18 look like a iPad in the 1968 science fiction movies.

  • 1:18 is that a iPad?in this 1968 science fiction movies.

  • THEY HAD iPADS!!

  • I've worked as an actor on movie sets, as a professor in a university, I have many favorite movies but as an astronomy educator and award winning artist, this one is still my all time favorite; especially this scene and others in the movie where HAL speaks. Many who have watched the movie express not understanding it and thus disliking it as an entertaining movie. It has many metaphors and philosophies to learn from with repeated watching. –Mark Seibold, Retired IT Tech, Artist-Astronomer

  • HAL is the most sophisticated machine in existence - yet he can't understand the concept of lying! That combined with his misdiagnosis of the AE35 failure is a recipe for disaster.

  • @Scifimaster92

Actually, that's far from the truth. HAL is great at lying. He lies to Dave and Frank throughout the movie. The difference is, he is unable to be proven wrong because of his god-like status on the ship. He lies to Poole during the chess game, lies about the AE-35 unit and when Dave calls his bluff, he covers it up with more lies! He isn't an infant, he's a murderer, and it's his mission to keep psychological control over the ship, crew expendible, just like Alien.

  • @Bassbait HAL's lies manifested by his orders. He was told to keep Frank and Dave unaware of the monoliths by his supiriors. He was created to pass on information. This contradiction of his programming slowly drove him mad.

  • @JPFanBoy2 Or maybe it never drove him past his programming at all. His orders were to keep them unaware. It drove him to the brink of what to US is insanity, but to him, it's orders. His job was to keep them unaware, and he did that, even if he had to lie and murder to get that done (which, he didn't ever murder. Note: "EMERGENCY REVIVAL PROCEDURES", I think HAL would be quite aware of these). He was ALL for the mission, which never changed through the film. It's just questionable means.

  • @Bassbait Yes, that is a strong possibillity. Thank you for sharing =D

  • @Bassbait The ends justify the means for HAL-9000.

  • @Bassbait I just now read a comic panel in which he got paired up with GLaDos from Portal (another psychotic, lie happy robot). It was hilarious even though I've never actually seen this movie. I'm going to watch it now.

  • @Arzamol5 Good, I highly recommend it, seeing as it's my favorite film ever. If you like Portal, except with slower pacing, less dialogue, and more "wtf just happened?", then you'll probably like the film. You pretty much have no choice but to like this film if you're a fan of Sci-fi.

  • are those iPads there on the table? :)

  • Anyone else notice that the 2 guys are using what looks to be Apple I-pads. Very interesting.

  • True, but advance each letter of HAL's name and what do you get?

  • @edusuntrebor nice find

  • @edusuntrebor LOL

  • @MacBookGuy91 Ah, did you figure out HAL's secret? ^.^

  • @edusuntrebor Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

  • @blacbraun Wha?

  • @DarkestHour999

Except they're the size of an 8.5 x 11" pad of paper and are only shown displaying video. The idea of a tablet computer has only been around since the 1950s or so.

  • @DarkestHour999

And the movie is from 1968

in Star Trek, they used comunicators that ressemble mobile phones, and the hiposprays ressemble nowaday's intradermotherapy "needleless injections".

in the book 1984 from George Orwell everyone had a camera in their house, and nowadays we have Project Natal.

A computer had a database on everyone, we have Orkut, MySpace and other Social networks.

in Brave new world too there are many resemblances.

  • I want a HAL!

  • Everything is going extremely well.

  • TODAY IS HAL's BIRTHDAY!!!!

    January 12 2010

  • H. A. L is arrogant

  • @frank5400

Let me put it this way, frank5400. The 9000 series is the most reliable computer ever made. No 9000 computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information. They are all, by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error.

  • Stanley Kubrick was a genius.

thes scene is the seed of how use computer screen as a part of scenery of a movie o tv serie (Mission impossible, 24)

  • Otacon!

  • Funny how HAL is the only one in the movie who actually chnages the tone of his voice.

  • @kittypaws2011 cause the machine becomes human. and the humans become machine
