Sherman got his own ass kicked at Missionary Ridge, trying to assault the northern flank guarded by General Cleburne's Division. Do some reading. The fighting was brave and bitter on both sides. The Union forces simply had many more men, and Grant and Sherman did not mind getting lots of them killed in order to achieve their objectives.

Brazil was the last nation to abolish slavery, but did so in the late 1880s. We fought it, and its effects linger still.

Now ....Brasil has more black people in that country than all of North America and the Islands combined. More black people speak Portugese than English, Spanish, French combined in Brasil. The Dutch who were here first in may respects had slavery for 20 years and then one could be freed. The white Southern owner was different.......

The New Testament in book of Philemon cautions slave owners to treat their slaves decently, and no doubt many tried to do that. But regarding the Dutch practice I cannot comment as I do not know. However, French practice was similar to Southern USA practice. Nothing can justify slavery in my opinion.

All peoples engaged in this practice but African slavery during the peroid that it hit Africa was quite terrible because that robbed Africa from engaging in the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION that was happening during that period from 1609 to 1865. Certain countries like Haiti that smacked down the White Imperial powers like France still suffer to this very day....

We fought a war in which slavery was a major component of its causes when other nations found a way to end slavery without bloodshed. "Self-determination"?? LOL! And yet the South stood for slavery and the owning of other human beings, and wanted to spread slavery westward. If anyone stood for REAL self-determination and was against oppressive government, it was the North. Not the South.
No, but the North--more specifically, Lincoln and his abolitionist supporters--DID intend to stop the spread of slavery westward, and hoped it would die a natural death in the South. One of Lincoln's core base of support came from the abolitionist movement.
The Emancipation Proclamation didnt apply to slaves in the states that remained within the Union. So it didnt really free the slaves. It had little immediate effect on slaves in the Confederacy, of course, since they were beyond Lincolns reach. Lincoln had freed the slaves he couldnt help, while doing nothing for the slaves he could have helped. POLITICS, A way to win the war.
And as far as the Spread of slavery westward you claim too much. A huge part of the reason was simply economic as well. The fact that competition would be unfair, North Vs South as far as farming. This has nothing to do with "caring" about slaves. It has to do with worry about themselves and thier ability to compete.

An interesting person that people might want to look up is Jim Limber Davis. He has a very interesting story. Grant once said that if the war were over slavery then he would resign and Lee said that if the war were over slavery then he would have resigned also. Lee let his slaves go long before the war and Grant never did. The last state to make slavery illegal was NY in 1872. Lincoln's family had slaves also. His wife never let hers go either.

This is 150 years after that most terrible and NATION DEFINING CONFLICT. People don't have any memory of how horrible that war really was, but 150 years in human history is very short indeed, almost within a human lifetime. The last living Confederate Soldier died in 1960 the year i was born.

The Union forces couldn't have won w/out myriads of destitute immigrants resupplying the army

Sherman got his own ass kicked at Missionary Ridge, trying to assault the northern flank guarded by General Cleburne's Division. Do some reading. The fighting was brave and bitter on both sides. The Union forces simply had many more men, and Grant and Sherman did not mind getting lots of them killed in order to achieve their objectives.

But the point of honoring our ancestors on the southern side is not defend slavery, for most southerners didn't own slaves, but to understand the causes of the war and why both sides fought, contrasted with why _ALL_ other slave holding nations did not fight a civil war over slavery. Brazil was the last nation to abolish slavery, but did so in the late 1880s. We fought it, and its effects linger still.

I think it is a logical stretch to conclude that the US Civil War caused the advancement of sub-Saharan peoples in the US in lieu of the immediate aftermath of that war, the reconstruction era and the enactment of the "Jim Crow" code were detriments to blacks in the South.

The New Testament in book of Philemon cautions slave owners to treat their slaves decently, and no doubt many tried to do that. But regarding the Dutch practice I cannot comment as I do not know. However, French practice was similar to Southern USA practice. Nothing can justify slavery in my opinion.

We fought a war in which slavery was a major component of its causes when other nations found a way to end slavery without bloodshed. That is the component of fanaticism in our culture, and the war was a prime example of how that fanaticism manifests itself, to the point of the bayonet if necessary!

In fact, I just finished a book called "Black Slave Owners", many emancipated slaves both mixed race and not owned slaves themselves. If a free slave could "pass" for white, they were oftentimes accepted to white socierty. My GGG-Grandfather was a "mulatto" slave owner. Slavery is bullshit, but way more complcated than what you describe.

If the south would have won we would not have many problems that we have now. And we sure the hell would not have a black president. No, but the North--more specifically, Lincoln and his abolitionist supporters--DID intend to stop the spread of slavery westward, and hoped it would die a natural death in the South. One of Lincoln's core base of support came from the abolitionist movement.

The Emancipation Proclamation didnt apply to slaves in the states that remained within the Union. So it didnt really free the slaves. It had little immediate effect on slaves in the Confederacy, of course, since they were beyond Lincolns reach. Lincoln had freed the slaves he couldnt help, while doing nothing for the slaves he could have helped. POLITICS, A way to win the war.
