Very nice matt, to bad I'm not in the bay area anymore. Wouldn't mind getting together with ya. I been playing congas for 37 years and still have the same congas I started with. There the king kongas made in the bay area, which they don't make anymore. I had them painted my colors and all. What I like about my congas is the head, there about twice as thick as lp and they look sweet. Take care bro ;O) IMO, bongos are not hard to play once you learn the basics.

Mr. Mdubuque you have made a amazing portrayal of the original son montuno from rural Oriente in Cuba. Your pattern, techniques and rhythm show the exact style of this tradition and it makes it even better to have Los Compadres in the background since they were one the faithful representatives of Son Oriental which is the original foundation for all other forms of son that evolved later. I wonder if it is Pedro Mena the bongocero playing in the rocordings you use here
Just got a set of bongos so am a complete beginner so will be watching these videos constantly to try and learn to get somewhere near your standard. Class beat and true talent, keep up the good work!!
Ha! M-dub, I grew up on E 13th st. in the 1950s, when this music was everywhere. I can tell the good stuff. You're not just playing it, you're speaking the language....
Hi, Nice video and I like some of your licks! That sorta upside-down martillo that crept in about 2:29 was really rocking and some of the triples you snuck in. Yeah!
Are you left handed? You look like you're playing right handed but like you have the bongos round left handed?
About the history part: I read that Son grew from Changui and the "montuno" part was brought in later to add to the Son form (though maybe it came from an older tradition) does that agree with what you're saying?
I looked amongst youtube to find a real bongo sound...and I found it on this fellows bongos. I love them. Earthy and resounding, but with the rhythm of spirits.
It's a very controversial question. It depends on how you define son montuno and my definition is correct, although controversial. I've explored it in quite a bit of depth with the families of the people who created the genre.
The cowbell was first commonly used routinely by a bongosero by Papa Kila, bongosero for Arsenio Rodrigues.
Good video, he makes it look like you could learn it in 5 minutes flat, but as a Bongo owner (notice I didn't say player.....yet) I know how difficult this level of expertise really is. Enjoy!!!
Tiene ritmo, pero esta fuera de tono.
