That was because the Iranian Revolution had kidnapped hundreds of our citizens and declared us their #1 enemy. And we really only started to give military aid to the Iraqi military when they started to lose the war. We also supported the Soviets during WWII. Even if we caught injured terrorists who had just killed some of our soldiers, they'd be given first rate medical care. Often their injuries were treated in the same emergency room as the U.S. soldiers that they had just wounded. And far too often were then promptly released due to a supposed lack of evidence and then they'd go right back into blowing people up.
There was only a handful of incidents at 1 prison in particular where sadistic military MPs mistreated prisoners. And they imprisoned themselves by the U.S. military for doing so. That was because the Iranian Revolution had kidnapped hundreds of our citizens and declared us their #1 enemy. And we really only started to give military aid to the Iraqi military when they started to lose the war. We also supported the Soviets during WWII. That doesn't make us responsible for their crimes against humanity. Neither should America be blamed for what Saddam Hussein did.

Even if we caught injured terrorists who had just killed some of our soldiers, they'd be given first rate medical care. Often their injuries were treated in the same emergency room as the U.S. soldiers that they had just wounded. And far too often were then promptly released due to a supposed lack of evidence and then they'd go right back into blowing people up.

You see the world as black and white, which it clearly is not. You forget, or ignore, that when the West backed Saddam's takeover was the height of the Cold War, when quite clearly the USA represented a far freer society that the Soviet Union.
There was no possibility of either ignoring or co-existing with the Soviet bloc; their whole ideology was dedicated to the subversion of the West. Unfortunately supporting dictators was the price for containing Soviet ambitions.
