  • my GOD! the video quality looks beautiful. :D lol

is the sony EX1 very expensive?

  • Do what you love, love what you do. Thanks for posting.

  • YOur aspect ratio looks wider than the usual 16:9. Is that a camera setting, or some generator in your editing software? I like the wider aspect, ane I'm wondering if the file comes out like that, or if there is some letterboxing going on.

Love the cam man! I'm getting one when I get another 2 grand together. I can't stop thinking about it. EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1-EX1...

  • I really like your concept with the "short emotive films in a single day" . I might try that too one day. I also liked your camera work and the look of the camera which I'm thinking about buying.

What did you use the Magic Bullet for?

  • Good choice of song. One of my favourite songs.

Where are you based, I'm always looking for fellow film makers.

  • love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice video mate, gotta love the EX1. have you tried using the Letus Extreme?

  • I have a brevis35 now, lots of examples on my blog at pauljoy (.com)

  • beautiful... and almost makes me cry because it reminds of the times with my girl...i miss her so much

  • Nice - thank you!

  • reminds me of comic relief?

  • even the cheapest cam will be a panavision in your hands. good job

  • It would be great if you were able to load this in High Quality.

  • what frame is this shot in?

  • Great film! Love it!

  • i love it though i would have gone with a different first frame (the one with the title)

  • cool footage!

  • This some great Camerawork and good song to go with it!

  • Be honest, is it worth it? Any regrets?

  • What is the name of that soundtrack you used in this video?

  • Biffy Clyro // Diary of Always

  • Hi Nice footage. I own a HVX200 and am thinking I am going to sell it as it just produces so much noise and grain in the image no matter what I do to fight it with light. i was wondering how well the PMW-EX1 is with grain and noise in the image, especially in dark shots? Thanks.

  • amazing! dont ye just <3 that camera xD

    Verry nice camera-techniques btw ;)

  • Thanks for the tip, still not quite up there with vimeo though, youtube need to get this stuff sorted.

  • Yes. Try upload to get Youtube High Quality, see my demo called "Youtube High Quality". You need to watch in Youtube page because in my channel does not have how to select high quality.

  • this is amazing man. love the cam work and composition..

    good job!

  • Nice. I was hunting for EX1 footage and came up trunps with this vid. Nice work, theres more to the quality of this than just an awesome cam, you have a good eye for a lovely shot. I can't afford an EX 1 sadly but its nice to see that thepeople with have them are getting the most out of them! Well done and thanks for sharing the film.

  • Great footage. Question How do you get such a good quality on YouTube, I read the comments you posted and tried lots of uploads.............but they all ended up like CRAP! on youtube no matter How Crispy clear the original file is.

  • Good deal. Great song too.

  • Great stuff! -- I have an EX coming in a couple days -- watching this was a great fix and inspiration. Please post more goodies.

  • Thanks for info about the EX1 camera. Love your work!!!

  • Great video and composition. Really impressive!

  • Jags, I am wondering about the camera's overcranking capabilities. The slow-motion of the boy in this film, was this done in camera (by increasing frame-rate) or in FCP? What is the greatest frame rate that can be done in full 1080p mode using the PMWEX1? Much thanks for posting the video.

  • Yes, it was done in camera. The camera was set to 720/25p mode and was recording at 60fps which puts it at just less than half normal speed. 60fps is the fastest it will go at 720, at 1080 it will go up to 30fps.

  • Paul, if I may, I wanted to ask you one thing. How do you manage to retain a good amount of quality uploading here? In short: what resolution do you shoot with, and how do you downgrade/compress - if any - to post up here? Also, how do you letterbox (of you do willingly)? Please forgive the arrogance of multiple questions in just a few lines. Fil (Rome, IT).

  • I apply the matte in final cut using solid black slugs over the video as I prefer the look. I usually shoot at 720/50p as this give me the most options in post, although if I know I want slowmo stuff I'll get those extra 10 fps by switching to 25 and cranking to 60.

For You Tube I export a 640x480 h264 quicktime file with whatever bitrate will allow the file to fit the 100Mb limit.

    Hope this helps

    Paul.

  • Thank you!

  • Wow!!! Love you CX6 footage. Thanks for the YouTube compression tip. :)

  • this isn't from the CX6 I'm afraid, it's from the PMW-EX1

  • I think this movie and similar ones are just delightful little things. I am finding myself caught in the watching. To the point of having bought an EX1 for myself the other day. And Final Cut Studio. Great stuff.

  • Thanks, hope you enjoy that camera.

  • Hello Paul. I am loving it. And I feel frustrated right now. I keep on coming to your videos, watch them and feel better. My wife and I are loving them. I also purchased the Magic Bullet Looks reading you were using them, and like it much as well. Being a musician, I know that the most important part though is still the takes. Hope to talk to you again, Thanks, Fil

  • Do you use a 35mm adapter? Or is this the EX1 performing straight up?

  • Stock EX1, no adapter used.

  • Brilliant composition. Absolutely fantastic video.

  • Nice stuff...What's the title of this song and who sings it...Thank you

  • check the description :)

  • I love this short... great video and composition especially the one with the windmill and the music just fits perfect! Keep doing what you do... and YOU really convinced me to buy a sony! Thnx!

  • Greets Paul, Beautiful concept and composition; I look forward to seeing more of your work.

May I ask how much post you did in Magic Bullet? I'm curious how much of the "film look" is from the camera or post. It's very convincing.

  • That's a tricky question to answer, in some ways MB gives it the film look by adding blurs and filters, but then the camera also contributes with it's shallow depth of field and native progressive modes.

  • good job.... i am also thinking of buying this one.... but cant decide ... before u bought this one....did you consider buying panasonic HVX-200 ?

  • I did think about the HVX, and it also produces nice results but I really wanted a camera that performs well in low light without making the images over grainy. There are a few reasons to choose the HVX over the EX1, but for my use there were a lot more reasons to have the EX1.

  • Thanks for the nice feedback.

I'm really enjoying the EX1, sometimes I offload the footage and I'm really shocked at what I've captured!

I edit with Final Cut 6 on the mac.

  • This really show how great this camera is!

    Wow!

  • WOW amazing composition! how are you liking the EX1?

  • Great work, what software do you sedit with ?

    Ian

  • Hi Paul,

I've become quite a fan of your films, all superbly shot and edited. Got to get one of those cameras, but where do I get the skill?

    Cheers

    Nick

  • Hi Nick, I'm glad you enjoy them.

Trial and error is the best bet mixed in with a bit of reading and watching other peoples work. I only got started with video a year ago so if you have the passion for it the skill will develop with experience.

    best regards

    Paul.

  • Looks very nice. Do you have a 35mm adapter on the lens?

  • No, all done with the stock camera

  • Hey could you post on internet for download this 1920x1080 the entire file? This would encourage-me and I believe, others to buy this fantastic camera!

  • I can't post a url here, but search for paul joy on vimeo dot com, there is a 1280 x 720 quicktime version available for download there.

  • Sr are you sure this isnt a 35mm movie? Thats incredible color i never seen in any hdv camcorder before.
