Well...As far as I am aware, Tolkien's son Christopher put together the Silmarilion. Since the elder Tolkien's wish was to have all parts of Silmarilion published together, it took a considerable ammount of time, and JRR did not live to see it come to fruition. So my guess would be #2, 50 years to finish his masterpiece.

This is really strange. While I'm not familiar with Tolkien I am a huge fan of C.S. Lewis. I knew they were friends but I thought that Lewis was always a devout Christian.
