  • Fucking relax everybody. The doofus in the glasses is right, because the Caprice put those FWD chunks of shit to shame. If the Delta 88 was really more expensive than the Caprice, then it was overpriced.

  • hmmm lets look at this picture, true gas was not an issue back then but if this were the case today and those two cars were still around 3800 V6 Olds 88 probably 18 or 19 on the highway vs Chevy 5.0 V-8 probably 13-15 on the highway sorry rather pay the extra $2,400 and get an 88

  • @daved1974 Then you're paying more for a glorified K-car than you would for a real sedan. What idiotic reasoning. If you want gas mileage, ride a bike.

  • @Tokopol whatever thats my story and im sticking to it

  • I love those square boxes. It's my favourite Chevrolet of all times! :)

  • the transmission on the 1977-1990 Chevrolet Caprice

    Transmission

    3-speed automatic

    4-speed automatic

  • its like if someone who owned a crown vic and bashed on a grand marquis...

  • What a dumb thing to do, fighting amongs themselves lol

  • I was going to say, it would make more sense to be bashing the Ford LTD then an Olds 88.

  • i guess oldsmobile didn,t have better luck :(

  • LOL seems like this guy is a spokemen for chevy dealers in his tri-state area and bashing the olds dealers in the same tri-state area even though they all belong to the same brand lol. i've seen that before nothing new i've seen two dodge dealers in my area bash each other over prices.

  • Okay all. GM did not put out this ad. This was a group of local dealers putting out a combined ad. Check the end of the commercial. While still not so smart, I am positive that GM did not endorse this and requested they remove it. Many times it is not a manufacturer that is dumb but the dealer(s), independantly owned and operated business with a franchise, who do not think things through. Many times, you do not need to be a smart individual in order to own/operate a dealership.

  • @ccryder5311 Exactly

  • @ccryder5311 Would you believe this STILL goes on?

I was shocked the other day when I saw an ad for Green Brook GMC totally BLASTING the Buick Enclave in favor of their Acadia....

I thought this stuff went out of style in the 80's.It's cannibalistic,in a sense. If GM's remaining divisions fall under in the near future,it'll be because of bonehead moves like this.

  • Hey Chevrolet, your sister company is Oldsmobile. What a pecker head company.

  • mom and dad had one, only drove it once:(

  • This was an ad for a local dealer. I doubt that GM's management in Detroit would have approved...

  • I love chevy cars my top favorites r 3rd generation camaro irocz 86 Monte Carlo SS and the 87-90 caprice with a V-8

  • GM attacking GM, great business strategy.

  • This would be like a Toyota commercial touting that its cheaper then a Lexus, well obviously its going to be cheaper and secondly why the hell are you insulting your own brand? Chevrolet and Oldsmobile were never meant to compete anyways. GM management wonders why they went bankrupt, they had the cross hairs pointed directly at themselves.

  • This happens more than you think, the only thing is here with automobiles it's much easier to see. Think about it? win win situation for GM.

  • How would the ad have played out if it was the Caprice against either the Dodge Diplomat or the Ford LTD Crown Victoria, all 1987 models?

  • the 1977-1990 Chevrolet Caprice was assembled in

    Arlington, Texas, United States

    Oshawa, Ontario, Canada

    South Gate, California, United States

Detroit, Michigan, United States – Clark Avenue

    Flint, Michigan, United States

    Caracas, Venezuela

  • ??? the 88 and that chevy were built on the same assembly line!!!

talk about shitting where you eat.

  • Probably one of the best cars ever made i had two in the last 12 years and got over 200,000 miles out of both of them.

  • thats like saying, " I', surprised Lincoln, My grand Marquise cost less than your Town Car..and their the same exact thing.."

  • @renosquid its all on the brand names it sucks

  • Going against one of their own...no wonder we had to bail them out....

  • very cheap , and very big, and fucking good car

  • wow - between making the delta 88 an UGLY FWD car nad keeping the caprice decent looking and RWD the oldmobiles had to die.... ads like this didnt help any either... I wonder if oldsmobile would have survived longer if they were able to keep their grand V8 RWD Sadans and wagons???

  • Wow this was in NY, my state where I live and the year I was born, I wonder if my parents saw this and thought wow that was the stupidest commercial ever, being that my dad is very into cars and could spot the stupidity lol

  • WTF? Chevrolet Caprice and Oldsmobile 88 are *were* the damn same thing! both the same car made by GM!

Who the hell allowed this commercial to air on TV? (I know it's a local dealer ad, but still!)

  • @albear972 by this year olds no longer made a RWD car.... all FWD crappy ugly things that all looked the same.

  • wow this is crazy bad mouthing their own brand

  • A "regular" GM sponsored ad never would have done this, but dealers could do whatever the hell they wanted I guess.

  • I guess this was GM back then, infighting among the different marques and each infringing on the other brands' respective market share, customer base, and set "price points" on the GM ladder. Hate to say it, but losing Olds and Pontiac was a good move.

It's also interesting they singled out the Olds 88, as it had been downsized a year earlier. Chrysler had no full size, so they could have gone after the Ford Crown Vic or Mercury Grand Marquis instead, but those were pretty boring anyway.

  • he lid...lied the delta 88 came with a 307 standard as the caprice came with a 305

  • @ghostshot1004 Delta 88 was a mid sized FWD car with a buick 3.8 L v6 by 1987.... sorry to say

  • @mustang633NY aw well im talkin about the delta 88 royales

  • @ghostshot1004 yeah... so was I. 1986 was the last year you could get the V8 RWD oldsmobile 88 in any trim line. So the ad is correct. RWD cutlass supreme was still around for 1987 with an optional 307 olds V8 and standard buick 3.8L

  • Caprice is the car of the century

  • @blkpopeye X2

  • @blkpopeye

Excuse me? The Buick Century is the car of the century! :P

  • How they gonna hate on their own people? LOL

  • gm eating itself

  • Good to see GM cannibalizing their own brands. However, it looks like this commercial was put on by a network of dealers, not GM itself. Even though, it wasn't very smart.

  • ماشاء الله تبارك الله الكابرس هيبة.thank you a lot.my greetings from Saudi Arabia

  • @18845555 Saudi was the biggest caprice market outside the US wasn't it? fair play they are great cars

  • This was a dealer commercial. Dealers typically only stock a single brand. A dealer isn't interested in the bigger picture. They just want to move their inventory. Not at all surprising they're putting down another GM brand.

  • These cars are beautiful and reliable. You must be proud if you own caprice...

  • GM was really dumb back then. Eat your own brands? Come on.

  • Yeah, if Olds had a rwd vehicle....

  • The delta 88 is the same damn car! The caprice is longer because of bumpers, wider because of mirroes and has a 305 cid standsrd...(i thought the olds would have a 307)....

  • i am willing to say this is after 1985. if so, then the delta 88 was front wheel drive, which is a different car.

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing how GM's brands used to cannibalize one another in the 80's.

  • Considering this was 1987, the Caprice was still a full-size with V8 power, body on frame construstion, and rear wheel drive. The olds had already switched to the forgettable and uncollectable front wheel drive platform. I used to call the 85 and newer FWD "full-size" GM cars "cheap imitations of the real thing."

  • the oldsmobile was priced more because most cars from the olds lineup were more luxurious and built on a higher platform then Chevy was ..but it was absolutely ridiculous to compare olds to Chevy when they were both part of the GM division ...its stupid because they were already competing with the real competition witch was ford and chrysler and they were doing great competing but they were just doing them self's in when they started this in brand competition in the end it ruins a company !!

  • In the GM structure the brands were not designed to compete. Chevrolet was the basic car, designed for families. Pontiac was the more performance oriented brand. They used to advertise Pintiac excitement, and Pontiac's WideTrack. Buick was the luxury brand for the middle class. Oldsmobile was the upscale brand, just a step below Cadillac. Cadillac was the top of the line.

GM would not have approved of a dealer comparing their cars to another GM brand. Their competition was Ford and Chrysler.

  • You flipped the positions of Oldsmoble and Buick. Oldsmobile was the luxury brand for the middle class, and the introducer of new technology, Buick was the upscale brand, positioned just below Cadillac. For years the upper level Buicks, like the Roadmaster and Electra, shared bodies with Cadillac. Oldsmobile shared its bodies with the "junior" Buicks like Special and Century.

  • I couldn't remember which way it was for sure. Back in he 70's my dad bought an Olds. The next time he bought a Buick. He always thought the Olds was the best car he owned, but the Buick was one of the first years that GM downsized the big cars. He liked the biggest car.

  • it seems pretty stupid to downplay another brand within the same company. This is just one reason GM eventually ended up going bankrupt.

  • haah cool to see

  • lmao, the're dissing their own brand! wtf?

  • Comment removed

  • @smitman55678 It was a fairly common practice for GM back in those days. Their marketing strategies always left a lot to be desired. No wonder they're in trouble today.

  • @smitman55678 They were not dissing their own brand, they are dissing another brand that happens to be owned by the same company. thats why GM did so well for so many years. All the brands competed against eachother, kind of like all the kids trying to get Dad's attention. The result was really fantastic cars, especially in the late 50's through the early 70's.

  • @smitman55678 I Know, what the hell?????

  • @smitman55678 no olds was owned by GM

  • @smitman55678 Chrysler did the same thing with Jeep-Eagle division as well as dodge.

  • @smitman55678 I think they were relying on people being total retards with regards to who actually makes their automobiles.

  • Terrible. In brand competition...

  • I thought that too.

  • Yes- it's not good to bad-talk one of their own brands. That never works out well. They should've compared the Caprice to a Ford or Plymouth within its class, rather than an Olds. Besides, it's not surprising a Chevy would be cheaper- Oldsmobiles were always priced above Chevrolets.

  • Never would have happened in Canada!

  • @Jurassic0Al old were more luxurious then a chevy

  • @eskimochild87- Yes, that's true. Which is related to what I said. You don't much compare a basic Chevrolet with a Buick or Lexus when looking at a new car because they are in different classes and price ranges.

  • @Jurassic0Al I know, i literally was asking the thing "why did you just do that?" and they wonder why oldsmobile died 12 years later....

  • @94TahoeDude- That's really too bad. GM brands were more diverse when this commercial was made- each make had its own motors, personnel- the cars looked alike but were actually more different. Then they blended it all together and gave nobody but Cadillac unique engines and such. Oldsmobile, and the others, became less Olds, Chevy, etc. and more GM. That, added to the fact that mid-priced luxury cars aren't popular anymore, is probably what ended Oldsmobile.

  • @Jurassic0Al and right below cadillacs

  • at 20. if Chevy and olds are both part of GM. then why are they competing i thought caprice only competed with ford and other competition that wasn't part of GM. well maybe GM. is creating their own competition to see which is a better seller the caprice or olds delta 88

  • In the old days the divisions were separate and competed with each other. When the divisions were consolidated more closely in the '80s and '90s they stopped competing and the results were boring, uncompetitive products.

  • Roger Smith consolidated the divisions in the early 80s. This was long after that, so it was GM just being flat-out idiotic.

  • This spot wasn't actually put out by GM, it was put out by a regional dealer group. Notice how he says "Tri-State Chevrolet Dealer" in reference to the NY, NJ & CT dealers.

The GM of 1987 wouldn't allow Chevrolet Division to produce such a commercial.
