The man most of you people have labeled as a moron or idiot is one of the best instructors I know and is responsible for helping myself and many others to be some of the best providers around. While he may have overreacted, anyone who has actually been in EMS knows that the press is a royal pain in the ass. Also I'm sure that there is more to this situation then we see in this video.
Your situation may have been true in your juristiction. If there is no scene established and the public has access, then the media has a right to access the area as well. One does not have the right to allow public access to a public area while denying those same rights to a public area to the media.
Sorry but as a professional photographer it looks like this guy was well inside what would be considered a reasonable perimeter at a HazMat scene. Doesn't excuse the EMT's actions. He should have got a cop to remove the photog but no way am I going to defend this photogs actions. I once witnessed an SUV rollover and was right up on the scene shooting until the cops showed up. Once they did, I identified myself and explained why I was shooting. I think they liked that because the cops gave
The press has no more freedom than an individual with a camera. In a public place, a cameraman (press or not) can videotape/photograph anything he can see as long as their is no expectation of privacy. Non-press personnel are protected by the same rights as the card carrying press. A person ignorant of those rights, like this EMS personnel & some police officers, may try to restrict a person without press credentials from photographing a scene, but it doesn't make them right.
@mcfdtv It's obvious that you're speaking to someone else because your comments don't relate to anything I've said. I'm a STAUNCH advocate for photographer's rights.
Doesn't look like an "attack" to me. He's just holding the camera so the guy can't film. Doesn't EMS deal with patients? Maybe the cameraman was in a patient's face. They are the press afterall.
Wow! How dare they (EMS) do that to somebody identified as the press! The press can go anywhere they can go andthe people have the right to know. This is not supposed to be a police state!
The press is allowed to have access at the scene of an accident as long as their, or anyone elses lives aren't in Danger. The press has more "freedom" than a individual, but that freedom is not unlimited.
The official trying to steal the camera (that's right I said STEAL) should be arrested for attempted robbery and assault (for touching the other guy and his property). "I told you to stop!" is not a commandment. The cameraman does not answer to this moron.
@photostation69 At every scene, someone is designated as an incident commander. The incident commander is in charge, and can tell him to leave. By the looks of this, he's either the incident commander or the operations chief (both are command officers). They have the right to tell him to leave, if not, he can be charged.
People don't do this to be assholes. Its to keep them out of the way so operations run smoothly and noone is injured.
@TheTimlinson Incident commander does not absolve him the ability to be prosecuted for assault, and in this case as he was trying to take the camera away form him it is attempted larceny.
The incident commander can say "hey dude move back", if the guy refused he radios an officer who then comes and moves the person back according to the allowed safety line. If there are citizens standing there that is as far as the photographer needs to go. This was assault plain and simple.
That camera man is a fucking tard!

What a dumb ass! Leave the camera man alone, he's protected by the Bill Of Rights, First Amendment.

What the EMS personnel did however was wrong

Wanna bet the idiot that tried to prevent the filming is convinced the Media is Liberal and saw this as an opportunity to kick Liberal ass?

@SpitfireOFatj
You're probably correct. Just turn on the media and within 5 minutes it will tell you how liberal it is... therefore it isn't.
