the well-meaning young people in this video already look pretty haggard and burnt out from their self-sacrificing mission of saving all of the children from all of the bad things and people. they will be singing a different tune in 5 years i'm sure, if they're not in a different profession altogether. or perhaps they're looking for a job from Michelle Rhee.
It is about ,"Did everyone learn today?" and ""What can I do to help this student who is struggling?". I give so much, before, during, and after. I cried the other night when one of my 2nd grade studetns came to me and said I may have to move again, because the police came to my house when my dad almost bit my mom's finger off!" The mother is struggling, not just w/ no English, but poor basic skills in her Spanish language too!
the "good, little children" would all go to the LIBRARY to STUDY and do their HOMEWORK!
They would also drink their milk and eat all their vegetables!
I'm still waiting for the T.V. reality show where Arne Duncan, Bill Gates, Michelle Rhee, Davis Guggenheim, et al. attempt to teach Remedial Math at a junior high in the inner-city!
@MsJanetWood I very strongly disagree with almost everything going on in Public Schools today, but school is not, or rather should not be about punishing. Therefore, if a child is late there is no reason for s/he to miss an entire day of education. In addition, a child very often has no control over when they are walked/driven to school. We should not be copying foreign countries because their schools aren't either as good as they can be. We need to what is best, not just better.
@MsJanetWood Flunking a student helps no one. It's like the lifeguarding phrase "a lifeguard should never need to get wet". A teacher should be so on top of it that by the time report cards come there is no F...
@thegreenteendesigner Unfortunately, there will always be students that absolutely refuse to study or do homework. It's the student that needs to prove himself, not the teacher!
@MsJanetWood Children naturally love to learn so the fact that so many kids are so turned off by something they naturally love means we are doing something wrong. If a teacher is faced with a student that doesn't study or do homework the s/he should take it as a challenge to find a way to teach that appeals to them. I guess what am preaching does exist, mostly in the Montessori system though.
@longfootbuddy You are 100% correct. Not only is it unfair to the taxpayers, the students lose as well. Most people working in the public school system have no reason to do their job well and most decide not to.
What's not to like about the video? Wonderful, caring teachers who want to make a difference.
Too bad the actual policies advocated by this "StudentsFirst" organization will HURT not help kids. You want to make a difference? tutor kids after school in your community, help in classrooms, send much needed supplies. The only people who will benefit from "StudentsFirst" are Michelle Rhee and her billionaire buddies trying to profit from destroying public education.
interesting video and very informative

If it weren't for the "evil teachers' unions",

In foreign countries, they close the school gates at precisely 8:00 a.m. There is a zero-tolerance for tardiness.
In America, late students go to the office and get a tardy slip.
In foreign countries, all students are required to wear a uniform.
In America, parents can sign waivers for their children that excuse them from wearing the uniform! (Tattoos and piercings are very common nowadays!)
In foreign countries, there is no social promotion, teachers can "flunk" students.

@em5sol
A soft chair should be provided in the back of each class so parents can "VISIT THEIR CHILD'S CLASSROOM.
