In the book Dracula's just less powerful during the day which is why he usually picks that time to rest. Sunlight doesn't kill him though. Nosferatu started that and it became an untrue cliche and while an interesting idea, it doesn't mean it should be considered fact. Here it seems to weaken him, but even then it doesn't kill him, which is fine in it's own universe.
As for being the "worst" Dracula film, it's not even close. There's a number of versions that are worse.
The Palance version is by far the best Dracula I have ever seen, and the ending is very powerfull in my opinion - Palance does the role of his life in this movie.
I was never very found of Coppolas version, it feelt like he tried to make a cartoon movie (all credits to Gary Oldman though who is a great actor).
If any of y'all want to see an interesting interpretation of Dracula, see Francis Lederer in the Return of Dracula, relased a couple of months before the first one with Lee.
well, tecnically a vampire dont burned when the sun was on him, he become weaker, nearlly, like a human(a little more), but dont dies, in the book of dracula, one capter they(stewart, van helsin, and harker) tray to kill him in a alf day, but he barely scapes, they dont faight because is day and he was to weak for face 3 means armor and preparated.(sorry for my bad english)
Not to tread on the current theme here, but there have been many great Dracula portrayors in the past, as well as some smelly ones. However, no one has captured the Dracula that was Bela Lugosi. He is a god.
Christopher Lee is the only actor who was best at playing the prince of darkness, and peter cushing is Van Helsing..Did you guys see the ending to Horror of Dracula? The fight scene was fantastic, very cool indeed.
Be almost same character portrayal he did as Barnabas Collins. Jonathan was asked by Dan Curtis. Jonathan felt he was already type-cast he was offered only horror film roles.
Palance's interpretation of the dark prince is a personal fav of mine. His performance, more so than any other, gives the viewer a sense of the torment that surely would have defined much of Dracula's existence. His (Palance) was a melancholy Dracula. Although quite a departure from the Stoker novel, I enjoyed his death scene, especially with the sound over of the battle scene, recalling Dracula's glory days as a young tyrant. I would have liked to see him deteriorate on the lance, though.
I don't even mean a literal eroticism, the glorious undertones of both Nosferatu's and really all silent film has this erotic feel to it. Oldman's Dracula definately is not the image that I got from the book, but Pallance really didn't capture it either. I simply love everything about Coppola's Dracula, it's so overblown and grandiose. I have read the book, multiple times. It is one of my favorite pieces of literature.
This is by far the worst adaptation. Where's the eroticism of Dracula, the best by far are the two Nosferatu films and Coppola's. Than Legosi and Christopher Lee's versions.
Nosferatu looks like a freaking rat! There is no eroticism there. Coppola's is his own remake of the whole novel-what with Oldman with a beehive haircut and Hopkins playing Van Helsing as a neurotic?
@firstwaveintact the only adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula that comes close is the BBC movie Count Dracula with Louis Jourdan. But I admit that the best Dracla in my opinion is Christopher Lee, but there are numerous actors that put there own interpretation of Dracula.
lol at how the walk away like nothing happened after they kill him xD!!!
What I like about this is that it combines both "elements of his death" the Nosferatu and some other versions SUNLIGHT DEATH and the other more classical HEART PIERCE DEATH. Pretty good actually.
I saw it when I was a kid too...and never forgot it! It was the scariest movie I had ever seen! I've been looking for this movie everywhere and haven't been able to find it! Since I saw that movie, Jack Palance has always been Dracula...no matter what movie he played in!
I can't believe I found this video on youtube. I rembember vividly that Sunday night in October 1973. I was an 8 year old kid excited out of my wits that Dracula was gonna be on tv tonight. My excitement turned to scorn when the broadcast was pre-empted by that turd Richard Nixon and his watergate mess. And mom was gonna let me stay up past 9:00 pm. Thanks Dick.

Palance was so powerful in this film. This is probably my favorite Dracula film. The 1977 BBC Count Dracula is the only other Dracula movie I would put on a par with this version. My old worn out vhs of this movie had a few different takes, including the Dracula death scene. On my old vhs, blood spurts from the dying count.
Thanks so much for putting this here! I have only soundtrack! My comments
1. Chris Lee is very overrated, altough the Hammer films are great.
2. 1992 version has breathtakingly gorgeous fruitcake look some adore - like me! - and some hate, GH was good, Winona and Lucy looked dazzling in those dresses and I think it is very enjoyable. It´s not horror but Horror is nowadays sick crap anyways!
I must disagree. I don't think Christopher Lee's Dracula is overrated. But I think Lee was directed to play too shallow. I don't know if you have seen the non-Hammer Dracula film starring Christopher Lee, but in that one Lee really is stunning, playing the Dracula more insightful and his hair is gray in the beginning of the movie and he wears a mustache. Lee himself prefers that movie over all the Hammer films.
2. The 1992 version was obviously a rip off from this one but I blame the directors mostly because of my dislike for that movie. Dracula was too soft. You almost wanted to sympathize with him, which is way wrong to do. Jack Palance had the same basic story but you see his pain as he remembers his lost love, but then again quickly get back to the evil Dracula we so much enjoy seeing.
Hi! I have seen one non-Hammer Dracula, El Conde Dracula, and although it was directed by trash expert Jesus I-should-not-direct-even-traffic Franco it was noble failure. About softness... I think Dracula who gave babies to his women, vampirized Lucy and murdered poor lunatic Renfield was hardly soft, haa! (Albeit I think Vlad the Impaler was sick piece of crap and Count Dracula should not sullied with him, but I digress!!)
I kinda agree. Christopher Lee is my second favorite Dracula ever and he was good in all movies. I think I am one of the few who liked Count Dracula (1970)
I love Jess Franco's Count Dracula. So true to the novel, and Mr. Lee's preformance was by far one of the best. Possibly better than Gary Oldman. However, Jack Palance and Bela Lugosi are amazing.

Gary Oldman is really "Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula"--no way is he Bram Stoker's--where they hell did Coppola get the beehive hairdo from?
Anthony Hopkins is the worst Van Helsing in history--which is saying something since "Van Helsing" is basically a cartoon.
Although not mentioned here, Frank Langella, a great actor, cannot even hold a candel, so to speak to Palance and Louis Jourdan.

What makes you think it should be needed? Have you even read the book? Have you even seen the original Nosferatu?
Lugosi will always be Dracula. Even Villaries was great. Gary Oldman's character was great, but that character didn't feel so Dracula-like.
