i think ron howard is doing a film about the 77 championship....that shud be good! amazed how calm lauda is as he is slowly patched up by EMS...i guess the adrenaline numbed the pain!
Ron Howard is interested in this footage: @RealRonHoward "Any one know the young boy who shot the 8mm footage of Lauda's crash? I'm looking for leads"
At the end of the video you can see good the edge of the way, and it's a way to steep. Somethimes that cause that the one side of the car is a little moment in the air. And that's what is so dangerous!
The response time was mostly due to vastness of the circuit at Nordschleife (or North Loop)....14.7 Miles around, and the track marshals were terribly ill-prepared. All the drivers that abandoned their cars and came to Niki's rescue did a fantastic job getting him out of the car. Niki would climb back in a race car at the lightning fast circuit at Monza later that year.....That's courage.
@MocksyOne but that shouldn't stop Kubica from racing... look at Alessandro Nannini, almost a year after taking the 1989 Japanese GP crown from Senna, he had his hand cut off from a helicopter crash and sewn back on and though he couldn't drive a F1 car again, he went on to have a successful career in DTM and BPR GT before starting his coffee business
Merzario, Edwards and Lunger were heroes allong with Stuck for trying to save Lauda's life. That era seemed to have a lot of drivers that saved other drivers.
I wouldn't dare to 'like' this video, but it conveys indeed a very powerful message about the history of Formula One and the legendary drivers of the time.
People from my generation really don't know Niki without his scars - who knows what he would have looked like without the accident, but I always thought that the scars just added to his character.
I wish they would drive at Nordscheife today again...i mean, today F1 cars are extremely safe...so why not make a race with 10-11 full laps. It would be amazing to watch the race today....with cars doing <5 min lap times.
They'd have to resurface the entire Nord and find places to put hundreds of marshals and dozens of Emergency vehicles. There aren't many ways out of the North course when you get into the forest, either.
And this sounds awfully stupid, but people live there and F1 cars are especially loud.
@10110101100 I hear you. Sometimes when I have a really fast car I slow down not only because the corner ahead, if there is any, but because I get scared of what might happen next, you miss a corner even by a bit and you're suddenly into the walls. It's really, as you said, a death trap
In 1973 Roger Williamson died in fire because nobody stoped when David Purley tried to make them to. Lauda later said that he's been paid for driving and not parking. In 1976 he nearly died in fire. Maybe destiny.
During the 30th anniversary of this crash in 2006,Niki went back to the accident scene where he just narrowly escaped death. Some suprised fan asked what he was doing and the reply is "Looking for my ear".
THATS how the drivers should act. even if they wanted to win, they got out and helped niki. as far as i know nowadays no one does something like that. at least i've never seen someone doing it.
@TheItalianoMafiosi Yeah true, but today the chances of people dying in F1 crashes is remarkably small, a scary crash like Webber's last season (the backflip) didn't even scratch him. It would have killed him almost definitely in the time period of this video... Plus, marshals are now highly trained and have ambulances on location, so drivers need not get out of their cars to help, they'd just be in the way. Back then, other drivers were your lifeline... They were heroes.
@Bobobidodo I think you're forgetting the terrifying crash that Kubica had at Canada when he hit a concrete wall at an almost head on angle, car was obliterated, and all that happened was a sprained ankle and a concussion.
Niki Laudas recovery after this accident has to be the great escape by a sportsman or women ever. Remarkable the next season he won the 1977 world drivers championship and then again for the third and last time in 1984. What an amazing person he is.
Niki avevo 12 anni e piansi come un bambino, come ero ; eri e rimani il mio idolo , anche se te ne andasti dalla Ferrari , un campione sempre nel mio cuore.
@hooly360 senna was goin way faster and did a 90% full frontal crash, he died instantly due to wreckage hitting him on the head....bottom conclusion fuck schumacher
@makdous bottom conclusion: You're a moron! What does the tragic death of one of the greatest drivers (Senna) do to validate your statement - nothing. Go back to playing your F1 games on your playstation!
Most F1 tracks back then were death traps. Poorly designed, useless safety teams, a band if circus chimps as medical help would have been a vast improvment.
True Sportsmanship, fellow drivers, I think Arturo Merzario, Guy Edwards, Brett Lunger, and Harald Ertl, all stopped to help Niki, with their combined efforts w/o the very ill fitted marshals he survived. A man made of steel.
@Moose6340 Yes, also because there was a detour of approx. 20 km to the next hospital which is pretty far considering the importance of injuries that pilots may suffer.
@Moose6340 this is widely stated, although it is not true(!). It was already clear before Niki Lauda's crash that the Hockenheimring was to host the 1977 Grand Prix. Niki Lauda himself stated in his autobiography "The Niki Lauda protocol' that he and his rivals needed to be persuaded to start one more time at the Nordschleife and they comforted themselves with the conclusion that it was the last time for them. Unfortunately even this last time was once too often for Niki.
@Moose6340 The major reason is that the Ambulance-Cars do have to drive a long time untill they can reach a crash. The Nürburgring Nordschleife was too big and too long for Races.
@J90JAM@J90JAM '76 was the last year the german grand prix was run in Nordschliefe. But you can remember this beautiful circuit in PS3's Gran Turismo 5, wich tries to revival every curve of this fabulous nearly 8 minutes' lap circuit. It's worth to check it out
@Moose6340 but honestly it is too dangerous look at heidfeld driving around the track in a f1 car in 2007.. look at all the bumps n everything.. it's good that they don't drive there anymore...

@RedhotIta1 are you sure? okay. I know that this part of the track is a very fast one. But I mean, if you have sources.^^ But I can't imagine he went lower than 200 kmh...
In 2004 at monterey I was outside the ferrari tent and there was a rush of people I was forced up against a chain link fence and Niki Lauda emerged from the tent. There was such a crush of people, he was forced towards me and the side of his face brushed against mine. As the crowd thinned I tried to explain to my wife what happened. I did not wash my face for week! I shook Frolian Gonzales hand also, the first driver to win a Grad prix for Ferrari!!! What a day.......
It's amazing that Lauda could have won the championship, had he just participated in the final race. He thought the conditions too dangerous, so he drove into the pits after just a few laps...
That´s a great example how sport have to be. The other drivers stopped and helped him. Great. Thats very glory. I am German, so I see him nearly every day in the TV
Not only did he get back into a race car, but he came second in the championship that very year and went on to win another 2 world championships. Balls of steel !

@RedhotIta1 don't underrate the speed at this part of the track. I'm pretty sure he went more than 250 kmh

@RedhotIta1 are you sure? okay. I know that this part of the track is a very fast one. But I mean, if you have sources.^^ But I can't imagine he went lower than 200 kmh...

@RedhotIta1 yes. ^^ BUt if you see, 200-250 kmh is also very quick and he crashed nearly frontal as I could see from that angle.. ^^

Fack Lauda...

It's amazing that Lauda could have won the championship, had he just participated in the final race. He thought the conditions too dangerous, so he drove into the pits after just a few laps...

Lauda said he came back into F1 after the accident because there was nothing else he could do. He had to succeed to make something out of his life.
The man is a legend yes, he has guts.
