Haha this warms my heart! I remember playing my Halfling warrior for hours on end as a child. Even though I was only about eight years old at the time, I was fairly decent at the game due to my older brother whom had a lvl 42 druid. One memory that sticks in my head is when I fell off the boat and drowned. It broke my heart, and I Though I had lost my body for sure, but my brothers GM friend managed to retrieve it.
how did you manage to get that old OLD UI for character creation and traveling? I'm in a project 1999 server and wondering if theres someplace I can download it to make it REALLY look oldschool, thank you in advance
Are there any servers with original EQ and level select and any item selection /w pre-nerf items? I want to try out this game, but I don’t want to start from scratch - I don’t have the time. I also heard the original didn’t require minimum levels for gear & weapons. Is there any free Everquest emu servers that have pre mades with the best gear ever made pre nerfed - God Gear, kerafyrm, etc whatever was the best. I want to play the game in its prime with all the best items and run around killing
I remember strafing for that extra little speed boost and barely making it to the guards. or not getting a chance to get /loc off before you die and spend hours searching for your corpse. good times
eq was my first game, it was called everquest but i dont remember a lot of quests. mostly running around looking for my damn corpse. or running for my life from things that usually killed me. i do remember trying to get my class armor around level 20. my guild having to help me go into places to get parts that took forever to drop. great times.
I played EQ when it first came out i miss it ever day i only played for the first 3 expansions ending with 54 SK and 58 cleric i was clearly additive but i knew i was. So i would love to play again but its dated now. Been playing prefect world what a joke play for about 2 years but its nothing like everquest was, try EQ2 that was great too just not like them first year of eq. I hope someday somone make a good RPG again I try WoW all say its the same its highly not the same at all. Zark Drazon EQ
Exploration was real. No minimap. Learn the zones, love the zones, to progress. Fear, wonder, adventure. I'll never experience anything like it ever again I fear.
EQ was the absolute greatest game, the first with this seemingly eternal char development. 65 levels (when I quit), hell that was alot.
And the graphics with every new expansion always been a benchmark at that time for online gaming.
Met so many awesome people there, two of them died during 9/11, something that the whole EQ-Community brought me closer than anything else could, not living in the US.
I really miss this game, or a similar one. Those times won´t come back.
Sheesh I remember playing this during my 1st month of college and all those lost hours. What a great MMORPG where you had to ask for SoW, brag about Hell levels, and "conning" NPC's everwhere at "Overthere". Such awesome memories.
Ha I remember playing EQ1 when I was 12... The old theme tune doesn't get me for some reason - but the remade EQ2 song gets me every time. Never thought I'd get nostalgic over an MMORPG. I was only 12 too, I just used to remake characters over and over and probably only got to level 25 at my highest. I'm glad I didn't really get to the highest level because it takes the mystery out of it when you're younger.
like the spells were actually visable, the environment was always new no matter what, the sound affects were memorable, and people recognized you like you were just strolling through the FoB in RL...like even though it was a complete waste of time, you still felt like you had every reason in the world to be a part of the game

Ya I've played on project 99 some, but there are only 2 active servers. 1 is SO vanilla that they don't even have soul binders (and the majority of the quests are still bugged) and the other is completely up to date and lacks any of the old school depth.
Just like fast food, MMO's have become the "I want it and I want it now" attitude. While I agree that losing a corpse that takes hours to get can be frustrating, developers needed to cater to the majority. People want to log in, play for 30 min and accomplish what it would takes days in the original EQ to complete. Cannot blame them for making MMO's like this because that is what makes money.
it is sad that the only way to get your fix is to play on an emulated server.
The thing I miss the most about the earlier everquests was that people used to play for the fun of it, when i left a few years ago you were judged not so much by your personality or loyalty but by how far you have progressed through the expansions and what zones you had access to
The game induced fear. Death was real and loss of armor and all you had worked for was ever present. You needed another player to go drag your corpse. And thanked him from the bottom of your cyber soul when he did. Wizards and Druids could port and get paid for the ability. Clerics could bind and without them you were always at risk. The game made you need other people. And for some idiot reason they got rid of all that and then we weren't needed and in turn the game become meaningless.

This game was the real deal mmorpg not like this WoW crap.
I miss this game alot.
Course when plane of knowledge came out it started to go downhill only because class specific skills started to get diminished like porting. Used to be only druid and wizard could port people.
Oh well, was a damn fine game and taught you how to be a real mmo player.
Lofun-Halfling Druid -Mith Marr(before and after it combined with saryn server)
most mmo games, including EQ now, have basically fine tuned their "games" to balance some kind of adventure with the age old now you like now you pay to advance to the new levels to maintain relative power and streamline all the magic gear into generic versions usable by all classes/levels....biggest bullshit ever. There is no adventure in this game as it is all the same shit, different expansion and you can just buy it at gamepal and save yourself 10000 hours of your life...
I miss this game soo much. I spent so much time time playing EQ as a young teen. So many memories. Anyone remember the "eye patch of plunder" ? I got two of those which was insane to even get just one. Oh yeah, the commonlands trading, sad day when that was gone.
The magic in EQ really looked and felt like magic... Not like those stupid and ridiculously small balls of fire you throw in new MMORPGs... Best game ever!
I also miss the blind exploration and actually fearing death in game. The whole atmosphere just made you aware. I would give anything for a classic server run by SOE. But, I'm going to try out their progression server Tuesday and see how that goes.
Are you kidding me?! Just ONE?! IMPOSSIBLE! Oh, that unicorn in LFey! Brownies! Train to zone! Kithicor at night! The frakking moon! Blind exploration FTW. Knowing what's there takes all the suspense out of it. The newbie PoP quests for that crown thingy & whichever other ones I forget. Running through that goblin dungeon to the hidden room using cloudy potions! MY ENCHANTER. MY DRUID. MY RANGER. MY NECRO. The cha-ching you used to hear when someone bought your stuff. JBoots!
omg this music hit my hears, I saw the old huge UI, I miss EQ soooo much :(
No maps, no quest markers, no glowing items randomly all over the place. No DPS meters, no emphasis on maximizing everything, just a fun, open world with CHALLENGING monsters, and a great group based community that was the best ive ever met.
R.I.P. Old Everquest, there will never be another one like you :(
@Geurion The community,Realistic storyline, Not over the top *cough world of warcraft* and wasn't in a rush to level up, since i was actually enjoying the game, and not stressed out arguing with a dungeon instance master about shitty items. The RPG servers were also AWESOME! I felt like a professional actor it was that good.
Ha. I remember this so much! Main reason I got into this was because it was the only game I knew at the time! I was about 7 when i started playing (because my dad played) and I remember making a high elf enchanter and being scared shitless when I first used the controls on the keyboard to kill my first monster which was a goblin by the way! A goblin. By Felwithe. I never found the reason behind that. Goblins don't spawn there. It must have been a very old version of the game.
Oh god .. Hell Levels ... I remember those vividly !
First one at 35 was barely noticable, then the second one at level 40 was a whole lot more work, and to this day, I still remember level 45 as being the longest one.
I met people that never managed to get past level 12 though, because they died so much they effectively lost more experience than they gained. They often quit in rage and was never heard from again.
The rest of us, have wonderful memories of a great game. :)
@mchlor I miss it. It's the reason why people said "congrats". Everything was an achievement. Grats in mmo's means nothing.. and the term probably wouldn't of originated with the ease of todays games.
@mchlor I miss it. It's the reason why people said "congrats". Everything was an achievement. Grats in mmo's means nothing.. and the term probably wouldn't of originated with the ease of todays gaes.
@Jesus45U i bought it the day it came out in the UK, and i remember going into Electronic boutique to get it with my mum, and the guy at the till was asking me all these questions about all the stuff you can do in the game and i was so excited to play it .......BEST DAY EVER !
I remember first getting into the game. I finally got out of the noob area and into E. commonlands. I zoned in, stood there looking around, and it begins to rain. It was quiet, except for the sound of the rain. I suddenly became very cold and felt so alone... That's when I knew this was unlike anything else in the world. I also remember my first trip to Halas. Same feeling. I would actually find myself just sitting there next to a fire because I was so cold. Amazing how immersed you can be.
I remember when I first got on that boat as a High Elf at the Dwarven Docks and sailed across the world to where the Erudites lived with a friend. A treacherous journey which defined the word epic. I heard later that they added instant travel and did away with pretty much all of the wait and downtime in the game, how stupid of them. The great thing about the original EQ was the community, and it had a good community because people were forced to socialize and cooperate.
One thing I remember I was in Blackburrow. Now this is when the game was new.The gnolls would shoot bows and when the arrows hit you.You would see them sticking out your chest.I remember running and you could see the end of the arrows moving as you ran.and when you shot mobs with arrows you could loot back an arrow or 2.This was cool.
The emotions (no homo) that u just don't get in today's games - the awe of seeing a new city, the fear of dungeons, the comradery, the excitment of training through to a new zone, getting turned on by my woodelf rogue in chainmail leggings (ok that's maybe just me).
@Sakrateri picking up copper off the ground (as a HE cleric) at the windmill in LOIO and giving it to my friend to *hold* for me (he was an Ogre SK) and when he got 2000 copper he would run ALL the way to Overthere to exchange it for me! It would take him about 20 real minutes with no sow. Yes, I was a real stinker. P
@Sakrateri Hard as hell, but satisfying when you leveled cause you worked your butt off to do so. Corpse runs, losing a item when you die in PVP, falling off boats. Growing pains, but part of the whole experience.
@Sakrateri Exactly, it was hard as hell, but really exciting. Same with the PVP, you could get killed at any time by anyone, and lose your cash and a piece of gear. That was REAL PvP right there. Not that baby $hit they have now.
@Geurion The exploration, just like that guy said...The world was huge and there was no maps or anything to help you out. Starting out in Freeport for the first time was breathtaking because games back then didn't have such depth. Once you walked in the Commonlands, you had NO idea what would lie ahead and how far the world ACTUALLY went. All you knew is that you were a speck on Antonica and Odus and Faydwer were across the oceans...Who remembers discovering Befallen and getting raped instantly?
@DeathsBite Ha! Befallen, I lost a corpse there when I fell down a freaking well and got raped instantly. A number of much higher level paladins and clerics tried to help me get it back, it was at the very bottom floor, but they just couldn't do it after a couple hours of trying. I lost so much loot on that corpse (for a low level mage), gained no experience while trying to get it back, and had the time of my life.
@Geurion Getting my Ragebringer (rogue Epic)...... that took ....SO ..... LONG, Also pickpocketing was cool especially when it was off talking mobs in a group LOL. Text used to move so fast people never noticed you was stealing money from the group.
Best zone: UNREST ....where everyday was Halloween!
@Geurion Blind exploration was fun in the first month for me. Other aspects i loved: it was a really hard game. Death was horrible when your corpse was lost in a dungeon and you awoke naked were you bound. Because of this people had to play carefully and skilled. Second big aspect: it was a PvE game without class balancing. That allowed a diversification between classes i never experienced in other games. Nobody complained clerics lack of DPS in PvP. Almost nobody cared about PvP.
@Geurion Believe it or not, CR's, running back for your body in your undies, teaches you not to fuck around and die lol, OH! Fippy Darkpaw in Qeynos, Lady Vox wipes, trying to memorize how to get to Lord Nagafen's lair or to the Efreeti Lord lol
@Geurion Winning armor and items by taking dangerous fights and/or zone navigations on while knowing I had friends or Guildmates that would help me get my items back if I would die, instead of trading for or buying things.
Agrees with romantic I miss this so much, I stoll play, but not like I use to. I would be up for hours7to10 straight, just playing and xping..now I might be on once a week. Just not the same anymore. :(
12 years ago, this is how my my MMO career began. Wandering around Kelethin, killing skeletons, and falling to my death from the top of the city.

This game was the real deal mmorpg not like this WoW crap.
I miss this game alot.
Course when plane of knowledge came out it started to go downhill only because class specific skills started to get diminished like porting. Used to be only druid and wizard could port people.
Oh well, was a damn fine game and taught you how to be a real mmo player.

most mmo games, including EQ now, have basically fine tuned their "games" to balance some kind of adventure with the age old now you like now you pay to advance to the new levels to maintain relative power and streamline all the magic gear into generic versions usable by all classes/levels....biggest bullshit ever.

I also miss the blind exploration and actually fearing death in game. The whole atmosphere just made you aware. I would give anything for a classic server run by SOE. But, I'm going to try out their progression server Tuesday and see how that goes.

@paulpeterson03 The progression server was enough to make me re-sub... it's not quite the same as original, but it's good enough and great fun.

R.I.P. Old Everquest, there will never be another one like you :(
Vegeta0585 1 year ago 3

Ahhhhh this game brings so many memories back.... ORC HILL, that zone past orc hill with all the orcs...
I honestly think thats where the /train came from... all i remember seeing was people running back to the zone with a HUGE train of orcs.
x04civicsix 1 year ago
One thing I remember I was in Blackburrow. Now this is when the game was new.The gnolls would shoot bows and when the arrows hit you.You would see them sticking out your chest.I remember running and you could see the end of the arrows moving as you ran.and when you shot mobs with arrows you could loot back an arrow or 2.This was cool.
TheDragonknee71 1 year ago

sandlwood65 1 year ago
@Sakrateri Hard as hell, but satisfying when you leveled cause you worked your butt off to do so. Corpse runs, losing a item when you die in PVP, falling off boats. Growing pains, but part of the whole experience.
lolitah028 1 year ago
@lolitah028
Oh yes! I remember falling off the boats! It was hilarious and f*cking annoying at the same time lol
fibreoptik 1 year ago
@Sakrateri Exactly, it was hard as hell, but really exciting. Same with the PVP, you could get killed at any time by anyone, and lose your cash and a piece of gear. That was REAL PvP right there. Not that baby $hit they have now.

@Geurion And when you die - you were really SOL!
sbemtgs 1 year ago
@Geurion The exploration, just like that guy said...The world was huge and there was no maps or anything to help you out. Starting out in Freeport for the first time was breathtaking because games back then didn't have such depth. Once you walked in the Commonlands, you had NO idea what would lie ahead and how far the world ACTUALLY went. All you knew is that you were a speck on Antonica and Odus and Faydwer were across the oceans...Who remembers discovering Befallen and getting raped instantly?
DeathsBite 1 year ago
@DeathsBite Ha! Befallen, I lost a corpse there when I fell down a freaking well and got raped instantly. A number of much higher level paladins and clerics tried to help me get it back, it was at the very bottom floor, but they just couldn't do it after a couple hours of trying. I lost so much loot on that corpse (for a low level mage), gained no experience while trying to get it back, and had the time of my life.
Daemonocracy 1 year ago
@Geurion Mixture between the music, and corpse running XD

@Geurion Getting my Ragebringer (rogue Epic)...... that took ....SO ..... LONG, Also pickpocketing was cool especially when it was off talking mobs in a group LOL. Text used to move so fast people never noticed you was stealing money from the group.
Best zone: UNREST ....where everyday was Halloween!
kingdarko 1 year ago 2
@Geurion Blind exploration was fun in the first month for me. Other aspects i loved: it was a really hard game. Death was horrible when your corpse was lost in a dungeon and you awoke naked were you bound. Because of this people had to play carefully and skilled. Second big aspect: it was a PvE game without class balancing. That allowed a diversification between classes i never experienced in other games. Nobody complained clerics lack of DPS in PvP. Almost nobody cared about PvP.
frontlinefan 1 year ago
@Geurion
A true sense of wonder and exploration.
A real community that would help each other.
The risk vs reward. It made every crawl exciting and every item upgrade made me jump in my seat.
The graphics and music are also still my all time favorites.
