James Spader is a great actor, but his finest role was as Alan Shore going up against the US Supreme court and the Texas Supreme court on Boston Legal. For all the comedy and goofiness of that show, those two scenes send chills down my back everytime I watch them.

No, I think the conflict is one of class, not sexuality. Blaine likes Andy, despite his peer groups rejection of her. This was a big deal in the '80's, and is difficult to explain now--back then, Andy would have been a pariah so Blaine's interest was really radical.
