  • It seems that people here don't understand what CISC and RISC means... and bacause of that they rely completely on Floating point Operations Per Second to state a CPU as "tha King of CPUs"...

  • @crayonmastah 6th: learn grammer correctly lol

  • 1st: ps3 tech is 5years old (architecture 5+ years old)

2nd: this video is years old

    3rd: PS3 is old tech and isn't better then today's pc's

4th: im 22 years old and to old to be a fanboy just to clear that up. (besides i use my ps3 atleast 3 times a week even if its to watch a bluray...

and 5th: not have relations with that woman

  • Gtx 275, old midrange gpu: 1010 flops :)

  • Cell = 218 GFlops

    8800 gt = 504 GFlops

    hd 5850 = 2088 GFlops

    damn times change :)

  • @MouthofSaurons You can't compare those the cell is a processor NOT a GPU it is pared with a gpu in the ps3 though compare those gpu's to the RSX and comment back :P with some proper research plz :D But yeah I get your point a 5870 is so much more damn power than consoles these days phew. But seriously for a processor to produce 218 gflops of power is better than what ever the 990x @ 4ghz would give no mroe than 100 gflops...

  • @JSUTSGJ but GPU's can do CPU still with eg. OpenCL and Compute Shaders (or was it direct compute?), and if they can do the same as CPU's, why isnt it ok to compare them?

  • @MouthofSaurons I didn't mean for it to get so complex as that lol yeah I agree and your right , What I meant was you can't compare them because generally they don't fall into the same category if you take all of waht you said out LMAO , didn't mean nothing by it dude.

  • @MouthofSaurons DirectCompute (part of DirectX) uses compute shaders just like Direct3D (also part of DirectX) uses pixel, vertex, geometry, domain and hull shaders.

OpenCL and DirectCompute (as well as the proprietary NVIDIA CUDA and AMD Stream) allow GPUs to do a few things CPUs can do, but not all. You can't run an internet browser on a GPU, for instance. But the upside it that the few things you can run, like video conversions or physics simulations, are done much faster than on a CPU.

  • @JSUTSGJ Cell does have an unusually high FLOPS peak performance, but that is because it has eight SPEs which are quite similar to the stream processors on a GPU. It's perfectly fine to compare Cell to a GPU, they use similar systems for floating-point calculations.

Also, a processor isn't made of FLOPS performance only. Gulftown processors like the i7-990X have six times as many cores, 27 times as much cache and a newer, much more efficient microarchitecture (Westmere).

  • @MouthofSaurons dumb cell is a processor

why you are comparing a processor with a GPU? hd 5850 is a GPU!

want to compare? compares the cell vs. a Core i7

should only compare CPU vs CPU

  • @TheFred128 Because GPU's can do CPU tasks with OpenCL / CUDA so the comparison is fiar

  • @TheFred128 Cell gets its high single-precision FLOPS performance from the fact that it has eight SIMD units (SPEs), just like the SIMD units used as stream processors on GPUs. The comparison between Cell and GPUs couldn't be more adequate.

Also, Cell is a single-core RISC-only PowerPC processor from 2005, with 512 KB of L2 cache. It's NOTHING compared to a Core i7 processor.

  • @MouthofSaurons

cell is a cpu not gpu

  • @gregorythegreatest15 those GPU's can do CPU stuff aswell with OpenCL

  • sory i made misteck whole radeon 5850 at single precision hawe 2,08teraflops whole ps3 hawe 2,18 teraflops

  • @lesthatful PS3 peaks at 543.2 GFLOPS (179.2 from Cell, 364 from RSX), not 2.18 TFLOPS.

    Also, PS3 has a 4.4 GP/s and 13.2 GT/s peak fillrates (pixel and texel, respectively) and a 22.4 GB/s memory bandwidth (128-bit GDDR3 at 700 MHz). In comparison, a Radeon HD5850 peaks at 23.2 GP/s and 52.2 GT/s and has a memory bandwidth of 128 GB/s (256-bit GDDR5 at 1000 MHz).

A console with five-year-old hardware is nothing compared to current offerings.

  • ps3 cell cpu:

one core at 3.2 GHZ with 0.5MB cache

7 SPEs at 3.2 GHZ. these SPEs can´t do anything else than post processing.

the ps3 also has a silly graphic card who barily can´t do 1080p(mostly even 720p). ps3 has 512 MB ram total

    MY PC:

phenom 965 cpu with 4 cores running at 3616 MHZ. 8.5 MB cache(17 times more lol).

HD 5850 graphic card with 1440 steam processing units, support rslulution at 7680*1600 and maxes crysis easily with good framerates.

5 GB of ram total while windows takes ̣<1.2

  • i7 extreme edition

  • a pc can perform better than a ps3 at 1700$ more in upgrades,,,,ps3 at just 300$ is a bargain and a great value . and no virus or crossing finger to see if you can play a game.....

  • CELL- 218 GFLOPS

    i7 920 C0 @ 4050 MHz - 57.55 GFlops

    lol intel fanboys

  • Comment removed

  • @fedemupitchar

    gtx 275-1.5 TFLOPS.

the cell helps the rsx in calculating graphics thats why, but float point calculations isn't what makes or breaks a CPU.

  • @fedemupitchar

Thats a theoretical but unachievable number.

  • @fedemupitchar yea we know, ps3 processor owns any other processors, but over all the pc is alot powerful that the ps3, for eg my graphics card is like 2 times or more powerful than the ps3, i have a nvidia GTX 480

  • @ryinger A GTX480 being two times faster than RSX is an understatement. Specially considering it costs 10.87 times more.

As for PS3's processor (IBM Cell), it's a $38 single-core chip with 512 KB of cache that is outperformed by Intel Wolfdale and AMD Regor (today's value market) on everything but floating-point operations, due to the RISC SIMD units (the SPEs) which are not used on desktop CPUs.

  • @ryinger no ps3 isn´t that good. your graphic card is more than 10 times more powerfull than PS3 becuase of the steam processors etc. the SPEs can´t do anything else then post processesing.

the entire ps3 system is less powerfull than a AMD athlon X2(any).

  • @fedemupitchar i love how you get uprated by all ps3 fanboys. Flops isn´t a good way to judge the cpu.

my graphic card can do 2 090 Gflops. that´´s almoest 10 times more than ps3.

  • ps3 graphic can run 250 milion polygons per sec but the real time preformance is 1,8 bilion operation per sec whole ps 3 can do over 2 bilion operation per sec but new radeon 5850 can run only 1,36 bilion operation per sec and 1 bilion polygons per sec most problem of ps3 is the memory less

  • @lesthatful you are focusing to much on numbers, my hd5850 can run crysis maxed full HD 4x AA without any lag, that's 2.25 times as high resolution than uncharted 2. the graphic settings i play with is atleast 6 times more demanding than any ps3 game, that´s how i measure performance.

so that was the performance part, the ps3 controls is very poor and the games is expensive as hell(not only ps3, all consoles). ps3 also have much worse loading times.

  • @fedemupitchar 1. i7 920 gets 58.174Gflops in double-precision STOCK at 2.66ghz. 2. The CELL in double-precision with all 8 cores gets about 12.8gflops.... 3. In PC's we get our single precision power from our GPU's, i have 2 old ass gtx 260 core 216's that have a combined single precision power of 1750gflops, makes the cells 218gflops in single precision look like a netbook chip :)

  • @fedemupitchar my GPU- 2.8 Teraflops. The normal cpus in computers are not ment to do what the cell does. The cell had to be that powerfull since the gpu on the ps3 isn't so special.

  • @fedemupitchar my 100$ Video Card-1 Teraflop. The normal pc processors in computers are not ment to do what the cell does. The cell had to be that powerfull since the gpu on the ps3 isn't that good.

  • lol ps3 fanboys, get it through your head, a well equiped pc can easily out perform a ps3. its as simple as that

  • @ninjaseven k, that's because the PS3 wasn't designed as a computer though. If the next Consol Sony creates is designed to be a high powered computer, more than just a consol, they could easily make it far better than any PC out.

  • @clintony3000

by that time we'll have to see what new CPU's intel and amd have put out. just look at the core i7 980x, and look at the amd phenom II x6. those are both hexacore processors. the thing with consoles is when they come out they have about the same power of a mid-high end computer at the time of release, but sooner or later the PC will completely crush them in terms of power.

  • @ninjaseven Yes but Sony could easily get deals with Intel and AMD

  • @clintony3000

    so can microsoft

  • @ninjaseven Yes, exactly. Microsoft could also easily build an insane computer, I never doubted them. Imagine if Sony and Microsoft co-engineered something like that, it would be amazing.

  • Cell not only for PS3

    Cell can on PC too

    google it

  • lol its not 8 cores ppl get it straight. its 1 power PC general purpose core and 7 SPE's. and yes in a regular gaming benchmark a dual core intel chip paired with a fairly powerful gpu like the 8800 or an ati hd 3850 will outperform the ps3

  • 8 CORES!!!!!

You 360 faggets are in denial

  • no its 1 general purpose core or ppu and 7 SPE's not 8 cores. lol i have both systems i know. and you, my friend, are just a ps3 fanboy go look it up, you ps3 fanboys overhype the ps3 like its some godly machine when it really isn't.

  • there or also cores .look it up it,ab sony site

  • they are physical cores, but they aren't "cores" as most ppl refer them to

  • I speak Japanese... this has nothing to do with PS3... or it's too vague to tell because it's out of context

  • Thank you.

  • This is how our Almighty God created us!! o.o

  • i dont speak japanese lol

  • the cell has been out for umm how long ? 3 years 8 cor intel is new isnt it you compare old to new thats not really comparable the next cell processor should be alot more power full than the one out now hopefully

  • haha , that just another stupid ass intel fanboy , we can just ignore him for good .

  • Whats a 8 core intel?

    You mean i7?

    Its not really 8 cores.

Its 4 but another 4 is hyperthreaded.

  • @gamepro127onpsn

dude you cant get this on PC its not core i7.

    its really 8 cores.

  • I know.

Core I7 is actually 4 cores but 4 is hyperthreaded.

  • you can get it on pc, but their cpu's are different in architecture thus giving out much more power than a ps3 with a simple core 2 duo

  • but the core i7 still puts out more power than the cell as of now

  • LLLLLLLLOOOOOLLLLLLLL

  • yes a pc can outperform a console even the "all powerful" ps3.

  • gtfo, benny2503 is right

  • No xbox 360 fanboys? I wonder why.

  • looks sick eh!

I know this is the CELL chip processing the stuff.. but are u sure this is a Sony PS3 demo, coz i thought this was something similar that the 'Spurs-Engine' equipped Toshiba laptops demo

  • the ps3 owns,bitch

  • The PS3 is like the PS2 with an Xbox N-Vidia GPU. Wow Sony, welcome to the NOW LMFGDAO

  • no, no. The RSX is much more powerful than the ps2 gpu, and roughly equal to the xbox. dont say it copied, becuase BOTH of these systems were worked on for a WHILE!

  • you say that even thoe ps3 is producing the best looking gaes on the next gen console market so wat you are saying is bullshit

  • This is... ok, atleast I can see what hairstyle suits me instead of getting the cut and it turns out horrible :P

  • wow ps3 is now...gayer.

  • your father is gay!

  • it's cool that we are arguing about what the ps3 has. thats what keeps a brand living. i heard the ps3 has only 8 cores but i'm not sure ps. xbox sucks

  • It has 8 cores. And the xbox 360 doesn't suck. It makes you a fanboy by saying that.

  • you replying also makes you a fanboy.

  • How does it make me an xbox 360 fanboy?

  • yeah..PS3 owns

  • So that's how God created humans...

  • ps3 has 9 cores the main pcpower core and 8 additional cores on the pprocessor chip to handle differnt tasks

  • it has 8 cores and 1 isnt used

  • all 9 are used! 1 is just there to make sure that everything is doing its job right.

  • wow

  • ideally , sony should have made a automatic configuration tool so developers can port games a LOT easier to be used by the cell rather than the standard intel /amd style processors

  • I don't think its running on a single Cell chip

  • it is

  • Can you send us a link to the evidence. I'm not implying your wrong, I just find it hard to belive. I'd be very happy to be proved wrong as that would be impressive.

Including the realtime motion capture of that model on a single chip, that would be cool.

  • The Cell isn't anything amazing. AMD, just as Intel, will have eight-core, 45nm-processors ready for the last quarter of this year rendering the Cell obsolite as the cell is going to stay exclusive to the PS3 'til the grave, meaning the Cell is a hype without any grounds. The Cell runs on a single chip, but it's still nothing amazing as both Intel and AMD has already shown their eight-core CPU:s on a single chip.

  • Can u link us to the 8 core chip showings. I havn't seen anything on em yet I'm wating for a dual die octo-core nehalem and a 9800gtx

  • i cant be arsed to start another fight on youtube. i dont want to do it ever again. lets just pretend i said it wasnt then you wouldnt ask. :P i can only tell one thing, i have seen a clip where hes using only one ps3 and does the same thing. and i have seen them taking a picture of a tank with PSeye and then making it shoot bullets.

  • if ya do come across those clips give us the link please

  • sure thing

    blog(.)us(.)playstation(.)com/2007/11/14/video-of-new-research-conducted-with-playstation-eye

  • Wow, I wasn't going to get the eyetoy, but now I think I am.

  • Pretty soon we will be in a new era of gaming where entire citys are copied into games. I mean come on 80 gigs of space on the blu-ray or was it 50 well anways you've got enough space to do that!

  • Actually, with an upgrade, the PS3 can do 100 gig BRDs. Not even counting that you can swap your HD out for more gigs as well.

  • actually the theoritecal limit of Blu-Ray is 200 GB!!!

  • why theoretical?

  • Because so far they can only hold a max of 50GB. I think the 200GB is far fetched though.. Maybe 100GB, But no more.

  • Well u and I know nothing about how a blueray disc is created so we can't say anything All we know is that the blueray holds more than the standard DVD

  • fucking cool the Hair is 3d!

  • fucking nice!!! ps3 rules....

  • yea right people are idiots... PS3 is the best, most reliable gaming console on the market.(also best franchises of games coming!)

  • how could any system compare to ps3 with a 8 core processor while 360 only has a triple, it cant

  • The 8 core Cell Processor gives the PS3 the ability to give the enemies or w/e better AI, look it up, 360 has letter.

  • it does not have 8 cores , sorry to bust u

  • It does have 8 cores, just one of them is disabled.

  • no , it dosnt have any cores

  • you lack knowledge, go away.

  • i lack knowledge ? how hypocritical of you, FIRST you prove that the ibm cell has 8 cores

  • I apologize for that, but it's a fact that it does have 8 cores, look it up :).

  • it dosnt. it has 8 SPEs , SPE are NOT cores by ANY means , SPE has to share all the cache and cannot perform each streamed operation to its own like a cell can.

  • suppose your correct, as the architecture is asymmetric, however, developers will get used to it though and make much better ps3 games.

  • aslong it works aye

  • it does have 8 cores

  • prove it then , where is the source to your information ?

  • google =P

  • i never foiund any pages in google that says ps3 has 8 cores , ill suppose ill have to correct you , it has 8 SPE's , they are NOT cores, cores act like each different cpu, whereas SPEs needs to wait for the cell's 1 controller for any instructions to give to an SPE's , so it isnt as good as a multi core for "most types of applications"

  • last i heard the ps3 has 8 cores 1 isn't used

2 for security and other stuff or something.

  • nope , it dosnt have any cores , it dosnt use same technology as intel or AMD do , iTS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT :) go to wikipedia , itll tell ya

  • are you positive?

  • i bet my finger nails on it

  • ok but are you positive that your fingers back is positive?

  • this is getting boring ,

  • your face is getting boring.

  • no its got 9 one isnt used

  • nuh uh

  • ya ha!

  • hooo

  • Xbox 360 has to jump and swing up just to hit the PS3 in the knees.

  • Its what the ps3 eyetoy can do. This beats the Wii's controller.

  • lol, it's a cool video, but what did it have to do with the ps3? i didnt not see the system or anything..

  • Lies. I remember Ps2... They said the same things...

Nintendo, Now you're playing with power.

  • So? What about the bullshit Nintendo spewed at the time they unveiled Project Reality (N64)?

  • yeah nintendo wii its just a PS2 no new technology in it

  • yeah! right on! all my money belongs to sony too! lol

  • lmao thats funny when the reporter is infront of the tv screen and its changeing his look :P
