I'm less interested in who originally did it or who originally stole it. The sound of the music will live longer than any man. Crediting this song to the Loch Ness Monster or the flying spaghetti monster will not bother the original composer, who is now deceased.
Fantastic version! What year was that recorded? The recording sounds so clear and crisp, and the drum beat rocks! Who added this drum beat first? My guess would be that this version was recorded after Dick Dale since Jovan Tsaous supposedly died in a time when stereo wasn't even invented (1942) and back beats weren't around like that .... but please correct me if I am wrong! :)
@masterchiefHD: I have no problem believing that the first recording of that song goes back to 1927 - but this is NOT that version. Sonically impossible. Just listen to other recordings from 1927(e.g. Hoagy Carmichael, Bix Beiderbecke) etc. - What a difference in sound! The old greeks did invent a lot of great things, but in all due respect stereo recording is not one of them, and neither is that 2&4 backbeat. I'd rather believe the comment by arholis1 suggesting it's The Kronos Quartet.....
The first version of song was performed by the rebetic orchestra of Michael Patrinou at 1927 in Athens. The same way as all the first rebetic songs, the authentic composer of this song ( misirlou) remained unknown. The most possible is that the music was composed from all musicians of the orchestra of Michael Patrinou. At 1941 Nik Roubanis, a greekamerican teacher of music performed an orchestric jazz version of the song and he claimed that he was the composer of the song,
@arholis1 It is "Traditional" : I suspect it was around a long time before even Patrinou got a hold of it . This is a fine version though you hear near the end there are parts of Maleguena. I am still partial to the Very Fiery performance by Dick Dale live only a few years ago , ah but that is partly my centeredness to the electric guitar.
beautiful music

It was a claim which never argued from anyone, so he is considered until today as the composer of the song.
