I thought a flugelhorn was actually a marching French Horn. I actually played trumpet and one week while my horn was in the shop my teacher lent me his flugelhorn and it is played exactly like a trumpet and is a brass instrument and had no resemblance to any saxophone. Saxes are woodwind. A clarinet and flute has more in common. This because the fingerings are the same.

@asoftoday101 thanks for the clarification. Personally, I quit playing French horn after middle school because the band director was a nasty bitch. I saw some of my horn-section friends playing mellophones in marching band and I figured it was similar.

Isn't a fugelhorn a marching band version of the French Horn? As in, same fingerings and mouthpiece bell size? Wouldn't that most certainly be a brass instrument? Not a reed instrument like a saxophone would be? Correct me if I'm wrong here, dude, but I don't think ANYONE is buying your fugelhorn is a sax-family instrument story...

@hukitdeep i play the trumpet/bugle/flugelhorn. the flugelhorn is part of the brass. The woodwind family is any instrument that uses a reed to make a sound. The flugelhorn uses a mouthpiece, thus making it a brass instrument. Yes, the flugelhorn is the marching band version of the flugelhorn

@hukitdeep actually the Flugel is a mellower sounding version of the trumpet. it's used when a piercing sound doesn't fit in well. You are thinking of the Mellophone. it is a marching F horn but is sometimes Keyed in Bb.

CM is the master of the flugel horn. It can't be part of the sax family as all saxophones are woodwinds as they require a bamboo reed to create the vibrations in the air flow to create the sounds. While a flugel horn is in the brass family that require an entirely different mouth piece to create the sounds. Also, it traditionally has 3 values (like a trumpet) and is tuned to B flat like a trumpet.

@handmlake - Love the song, here is a few things you should know though. The flugelhorn is a member of the Brass family of instruments, and as far as the sax family, there isn't one, it is called woodwinds because they use a reed. Again, just trying to educate, not meant to be mean. Great song!
