  • Thanks for uploading. I don't like everything e.g. 5:20, why the slowing in tempo, it is not in the score, and Brendel says that he plays as the composer has meant it to be.. It also looks as if he is burning his fingers on those two chords.

  • ...Though probably no where as well... D:

    Brendel is absolutely fantastic.

  • AMAZING! I hope to play this one day!

  • Oh, how very grateful am I for having my hearing intact ~ to be able to enjoy this wonderful composition ~ played so wonderfully by Alfred Brendel. Powerful yet sensitive. Just outstanding! Thank you for sharing this treasure here on YouTube!

  • I love the third movement so much. It is so totally wild. The coda is perfect - the last chords are almost comical in how over the top they are. Such a twisted, humorous mockery of the first movement, like the scherzo of the Hammerklavier but taken further.

On a completely different note... 6:37 is the same chord progression as Hotel California

  • La più bella interpretazione di questo pezzo che io abbia sentito sin ora.

  • I love the way Brendel plays this like he's telling a story. I've suffered through a few tiresome performances of this piece and thought I didn't like it, but now I love it! It takes a master pianist AND musician to successfully interpret Schubert. Fast fingers are not nearly enough.

  • 5:20

  • Sorry to see this guy retire. Saw him play Liszt in 1999.

    Unforgettable, outstanding, regal.

  • I've never heard a perfect rendition of this piece, and probably won't for a while.

However, I daresay the flaws, should we call them that, present in Brendel's version strike me as the ones that cause me the LEAST dissatisfaction.

    Hmm...

  • @harrykinomoto You arrogant piece of turd.

  • brendel really is the best when it comes to schubert and beethoven. never over-romanticized, wonderful maturity in the interpretations, but somehow gripping all the way through. i like how he makes you notice this is essentially a symphony written for piano. he forces you to notice every transition with pauses, and tempo/dynamic changes. for those who love this interpretation i urge you to check out his beethoven discography as well as schubert's impromptus.

  • can't beat the sound or performance, thanks for uploading with such care.... prime Brendel (and Schubert, who is said couldn't even play this to his satisfaction due to difficulty) ... only 382 views ..... put lang lang tag on here somewhere to get 500K + , but maybe best to keep it the sane fans

  • @Discerninator bravo

  • !!!!!!!!!!

  • just amazing
