@Sentinal6 Get a Japanese PSN account and a Yen card from NCSX or Japan Video games and you get access to Salamander collection, Gradius collection, DoDonPachi, Raiden 1/2, Space Invaders, Raystorm HD and some pretty rare shooters.
@Sentinal6 If you're only buying a single unit, I suggest you buy the Gradius Collection for PSP, which has the arcade version of Gradius I to IV, and Gradius Gaiden. That's five games into one on a handheld console.
@Wartechie It's because this game is actually the sequel. Life Force and Salamander are the same game, it's just that Life Force is the American release and Salamander is the original Japanese version.
@Wartechie Lifeforce IS Salamander 1 - When porting Salamander to the U.S., Konami decided it was a good idea to change the name to Lifeforce for some reason.
@poopskinTheLiar Konami US thought that naming a spaceship shooter after a small reptile was an odd thing to do, they named it life force because of the organic stages.
I think it's already out in Japan (a disc with both Salamanders, Life Force and Xexex)...and it should work on the PSP since it's not region-blocked. I wouldn't expect an American release anytime soon. Not enough people in the U.S. like shoot-em-ups anymore.
Salamander is Gradius' sister series. Its biggest differences are the vertical stages, instant restarts upon death, and instantly-activating powerups. Pretty much Gradius with added vertical gameplay and streamlined death / powerup mechanics.
Yeah, the first Salamander definitely made an impression with that opening stage. The later Gradius' organic levels clearly used it as the standard, and V's fourth stage practically paid homage to it. Dreaded regenerating walls! And the boss' "fang" attack. I remember playing Life Force (NES) as a kid, and thinking those suddenly-growing walls were pure evil.
Another sibling of these would be Konami's two Thunder Cross games, which often go under the radar but are actually pretty excellent. The bastard cousin of them all is definitely Xexex, which may well be the best of them all.
On the first boss, it is possible to place yourself properly so that when it lungs at you, you'll be right between it's teeth, allowing you to attack it rapidly.
That's an awesome video for that game. Thanks for sharing it! If you like that game, I know you'll love Halo 3. I'm getting my copy of Halo 3 for free at halo3.wantsDOTit(replace DOT with .) I also get a free xbox 360 elite system.
Everyone better go get there copy for free too, before it's too late, at:
Awesome shooter, with an unusual (and deceptive) difficulty for Gradius & Salamander. A two or three credit run is quite reasonable, but the last two stages make you work for that 1CC! Haven't quite nailed it myself yet. ^^;

The MSX version of Salamander kept the Gradius mechanics. It does have the vertical stages, though.

And Salamander/Life Force seems to have a much stronger affinity for Organic Stages, fucking creeps me out destroying something from the inside out.
