  • Hello Valerie

:I am a begginer of lute (I already play guitar) and I enjoy very much some rennaissace tunes.

One of these, is this piece which is very nicely performed by you.

Where can I find the tabs in the web?

Thank you for this excellent played piece and not only this

    Bye

  • @MICMESS59

Hello, you may perhaps search on Sarge Gerbode or Wayne Cripps sites ? You can find tons of tabs there, probably this one.

    Good luck !

    Val

  • beast

  • where wuld one learn the lute? and how much is a decently cheap one? XP i wanna learn i like good ole classics and these have amazing sound

  • @rockpetrad

If you want to learn lute, try to look for the Lute Society of your country (easy to find on the net) then you'll have all links to learn and search for instruments. Wayne Cripps 's web site is also useful (many infos...)

Decently cheap ??, i'm afraid a decent lute is not cheap and the cheapest on the net are not always decent... Start saving money !

    Good luck !!!

  • Love the lute and your playing, I'll be subbing you because you play lots of old tunes some of which I have the music for so will be good to hear them played. Ive just posted a version of Kemps jig but Ive done it too slow really.

  • @fieldfullofthistles

    Thanks ;-)

Have fun playing early music ;-)

    Val

  • Great playing - By no means do I mean to ridicule, this is just light comedy - but what about the extra beat for sailor's to stand back up? You didn't include it, and it's what makes a jig.. a jig! Great playing though, much appreciated, pleasure to listen to.

  • @DurrMusic

You shoult tell Mr Anonymous, about the writing of his Jig ;-))))

(I'm just a lonely lute player, far away from...) lol

    Val

  • @Luthval Haha agreed. It's a shame this work is anonymous, it would be wonderful to give credit where credit is due. Same for Daphne, if you know the piece (I'm sure you do). Once again, great playing :)

  • @Luthval Do you by chance play mandolin? My father is a luthier, does some amazing work. Mostly mandolins, some guitars as well. I know he made a mountain as well as a hammer dulcimer as well. If you're interested in some finely handcrafted instruments, let me know! He's still trying to get his name out there so he's practically giving them away.

  • @DurrMusic

    Hello !

I don't play mandolin or dulcimer, but I play ukulele ;-) Perhaps your father could build a lute form ukulele ?

    ;-)

    All the best

    Val

  • Very nice playing, Sir.

  • @SergiuM42

    Thanks ;-)

    Val

  • Hey, how far back do the pieces you play go?

  • @dlggnation

    400/500 years ago ;-)

  • how is a lute tuned?? it looks very similar to how it's played on a guitar.

  • @Shenanigasm Tuned DFGCFADG (tune you guitar with the G in F# and put a capo on third fret... You'll just miss the basses...)

  • @Luthval Cool, thanks man. Btw your channel is awesome. Now is that in order from lowest to highest? It seems hard to figure because there's seven notes there.

  • @Shenanigasm

    7 ? no 8 ! from bass to treble.

  • @Luthval I counted wrong. I know there are 8 strings on a lute, I thought you were trying to tell me how to tune my guitar like a lute lol.

  • @Shenanigasm

In fact there are 8 double strings on this lute, but some have 6 courses, some 7 some 7 and baroques 11 or 13 (with very different tuning)... very complicated instruments... ;-)

    Val

  • @Luthval I get it now, I was confused, just tune the G string to F# and then capo it to third fret for the same tuning.

  • nice playing! love that tune. had not heard it for many a year. thank you!!!

  • @karmathondrup

    Thanks ;-)

    Val

  • Youve made me buy a lute and start to learn to play.

  • @Ivar7777

Cool ! tell me when you'll post a lute video !

    All the best

    Val

  • lovely!

  • @gwennysmom

    Thanks ;-)

  • I admire people who keep these great traditions alive. Yours is the best version of this I've heard. I play classical guitar and do a version of this I'd like to put on YouTube at some point. Did you use a camcorder with a built in mic.? If so which one? Your sound here is top shelf.

  • @TheClassicFrank

    Thanks for the comment.

I'm using a Sony Handycam, but sound is recorded (same time) with digital recorder Zoom H2, then I synch sound and video with Windows Movie Maker, and mute the handycam sound. No editing at all, just sound as recorded in wave file.

    Best regards

    Val

  • I play greensleeves on acoustic guitar I saw you play this on you tube and so saw your Kemps jig. Are you looking down at the music or is all this from memory, either way it is a lively performance without mistakes, thank you.

    Jim

  • Most of the time I'm playing from scores (difficult to learn by heart more than 500 pieces, for lutes, guitars and ukulele...)

    Thanks for the comment;-)

    Regards

    Val

  • Kemp's Men a morris side in Norwich celebrated a weekend of dance in Long Eaton where we learnt of a Kemp who danced from Norwich to London. Did he also write jigs I wonder?

  • He was an actor in Shakespeare's theater, famous for his dancing, and this is an hommage to him by an anonymous lutenist.

  • Hello Val, I listen to pieces I'm learning online. Somehow I always return to your channel, thanks for your many lovely performances. best wishes, Mary

  • Thank yo Mary, have a nice musical day ;-)

    Val

  • You have a nice musical day too Val ^^

  • Really good performance!

Was this piece original for Lute or for Guitar?

  • It was for lute first.

    Best regards

    Val

  • Such interesting and beautiful nuances in this piece. Your playing catches each one. Wonderful!

    --Bette

  • Very good!

  • Thank you very much !

    Best regards,

    Val

  • One of the best video's I've seen on youtube yet :) Great job, you've got amazing talent!

  • Thanks a lot. Try to search more you'll find some even better ;-) (look for Robert Barto or Nigel North, Eduardo Eguez, Andreas Martin Andrea Damiani and many more...)

    Best regards

    and thanks again

    Val

  • Absolutely perfect! You even placed yourself in front of a nice old wooden shelf.

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • superb !! I really enjoyed this piece and your playing.

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • really nice

  • Perfect! I love the lute and have never thought about looking on the tube to see people play. Ever seen the Excalibur movie from the 80's? There's a piece called Egrain's dance that you should check out, you could pick it up by ear. I'd love to hear it!

  • Thanks

I saw the film but don't remember the song.

    ;-)

    Regards

    val

  • lovely job

  • Thanks ;-)

    Val

  • Thank you maestro, reminds me of Jan Akkermann/ Focus. Isn't the lute a nightmare to keep in tune?

  • Oh, nightmare, no, it is not easy to tune, it's right, but with strings we have now it can stay in tune. (of course if you play with gut strings... but I don't)

    V.

  • parabens!! isso foi realmente maravilhoso!!!

obrigado por compartilhar esse momento conosco!!

  • Thanks ;-)

    V;

  • Wonderful playing Val, so authentic on the Lute.

    Regards

    Phil

  • well played Val

  • Great Work on this piece too, Val!

    Regards, Wilfried

  • would the form of this be AABB???

  • I have no repeat signs on my tab, but it could be. I fact there are more than A and B so instead of repeating each phrase I choose to repeat the all.

  • Good one Val. Can't help but notice that the right hand is more or less horizontal rather than perpendicular to the strings. Is that the the "Lute's way" or "Val's way"? Either way it sounds great.

    --Van

  • About right hand technique, it is the "renaissance lute way", for the baroque lute, with more basses strings the hand start to become more perpendicular, and for the guitar, well it is the usual technic since only one century (and if you look at my guitar videos, you can see it works also with lute technic and no nails) ;-)

    Val

  • Joli ! Cette pièce est utilisée par le clergé Catholique français ! J'aimerais bien en retrouver les paroles ! Merci, sire Val !

  • really nice melody. And excellenty played of course! 5 stars (duh!)

    Best,

    Jolina

  • Thanks Jolina. It is really an easy light piece you know... but works well and fun to play.

    V. ;-)

  • Yes and it's a cheerfull piece! You know how I prefer happy pieces.

  • Meraviglioso! Grazie maestro, merci beaucoup!

  • Merci à vous,

    Val ;-)

  • This was one of the first pieces I tried to play on the lute, that's a long time ago. Nice to hear it again.

    Trond

  • I don't know why I did not record this one earlier... Such a nice tune, I love it.

Ant the character of Will Kemp is so interesting.

    ;-)

    Val

  • Salut Valerie.

Encore superbe!

A bientôt

    Amitiés

    Valéry

  • Beautiful.

  • ;-)
